i think the idea of coruscant being taken by rebels could just be done as a background narrative, with minimal actual footage, other than the planet being in the background. all plot elements could then stem from it, ie

* deathstar is destroyed so it won't later be used to destroy coruscant
* han's rescue also has some other goal attached to it, such as reactivation codes for the droid fleet
* endor mission isn't actually about a shield generator, but is related to the above mission for the droid fleet.
* the droid fleet is needed to swell the rebel's ranks, maybe just for the mission, maybe for defence of coruscant.

the 'big picture' idea behind the rebels taking coruscant would draw on ideas similar to Hitler's final defeat, but if he had a nuclear weapon. He is going to lose, but how much damage and pain can he cause beforehand? The deathstar attempting to destroying coruscant would possibly be a similar scenario.

the current defeat of the empire in ROTJ is basically like hitler crashing a bomber during the battle of britain, and the war ending immediately afterwards.

this idea for an edit would encompass a six film saga, with the prequels edited extensively to support it. two big things we are shown in the prequels are DROID ARMIES and CORUSCANT. so these could be introduced in ROTJ to bring an overall closure. the introduction of new characters into possible prequel edits, could link in with reappearances in ROTJ. I'd like to think that if this was done effectively, you could watch the prequels, then ROtJ and it to sort of follow, as much as watching ANH, ESB and ROTJ and get the same sensation.

It would be easier to do if the Rebel Alliance have nothing or very little to do with the uprising on Coruscant.

Current events show that popular uprisings can bring down a dictator just as well as an outside invasion.

For all we know the Death Star may still be a state secret so the people of Coruscant may not have a clue what is being built up there.

It might be a cheeky edit if the crawl didn't refer to a battle station or Death Star at all but instead referred to a planetary defense system and the first time we actually see the familiar shape of a Death Star could be at the Rebel briefing (to a gasp from the assembled big wigs).

Not only are they building another one but it's going to be built right next to Coruscant and the capital could be it's first target.

Sounds like there's a need for a "SAVE TARKIN" thread. :p

Wow, you really made my day with that one. My mind even read it in an Alec Guiness Accent XD

I love all the radical ideas in this thread.

The best and most viable, in my opinion, is to include Coruscant (or Had Abbadon or Granicus or whatever other "Imperial home-world" name you want to go with) in Return of the Jedi somehow.

In fact, I think it'd be pretty neat to be able to bill a new edit as including all the features which were eventually removed from the final film - Imperial home-world, Han's death, Leia becoming ruler of her people, Luke metaphorically walking off into the sunset, Wookiees instead of Ewoks etc.

For now, let's stick with Coruscant. Personally, I'd like to see it not under Rebel control just yet. I think the point of it would be to ratchet up the tension further by bringing our heroes into the belly of the beast, the center of Imperial activity and government.

I've done a few very basic mock-ups to show what I mean. If the opening crawl introduces the planet as the Imperial capital, I think seeing the Imperials "at home", not out on the frontier, would help make the stakes seem a lot higher and give a greater sense of tension than the re-introduction of the Death Star.

Incidentally, the blue moon in front of Coruscant could easily be renamed "Endor".

I don't think Coruscant should be as lighted in ROTJ as it was back in the republic days

Yeah, it does look a lot creepier if the dark side dominates literally as well as figuratively...

...fits the tone of the Empire better.

i can imagine a shot panning up over the massive city planet, with just a tiny speck of a deathstar, and the audience thinking... oh my god.

Just playing around with a crawl for an edit where Endor is a moon of Coruscant and Luke returns to Dagobah before rescuing Han.  I tried to keep it short and sweet.  Many fan crawls are far too wordy.

STAR WARS

Episode VI

RETURN OF THE JEDI

The Rebel Alliance has been scattered across the galaxy.  After his disastrous duel with Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker has returned to complete his Jedi training under Master Yoda.

Impatiently waiting for Luke, Princess Leia and Lando Calrissian have went to Tatooine to rescue Han Solo from the clutches of the vile gangster Jabba the Hutt.

Meanwhile, the Galactic Empire has begun construction on a new Death Star orbiting a moon of Coruscant, the Imperial capital.  When completed, it will spell certain doom for the Rebellion….

That is a rather concise and effective crawl... However instead of "have went to," it should be "have gone to." If you put that in an edit though, some of the words would be need to be capitalized; "Imperial" and "Rebellion" seem to be possible candidates.

Wow. Is that smaller planet Endor?

What if you combined the Endor matte from the top image with Coruscant from the middle? Then put the DS2 on the right side?

You could even re-edit the dialogue with Vader and Jerjjerrod. They would now be talking on a Coruscant interior landing platform in the Imperial Palace.

Jerjjerky: I assure you lord Vader the station will be operational as planned and the moon cleared for settlement.

Take the emperor arrival footage and make that Vader's arrival instead. He's returning to Coruscant. Then you cut to Vader visiting Palpious in his throne room in a tower high above the palace.

gobalicious, I really like that crawl. Very effective.

It's just a publicity photo composite.

That was in ImagineFX, Jambe Davdar has already confirmed on Twitter that its just the promo pic that someone at the magazine found and figured was new FX.

Watching the Death Star attack scene on the Blu-Ray trailer I was reminded how inappropriately human the Mon Calamari dialogue, "Admiral we have enemy ships in sector 47!" is.

Rather than lose the line it might make sense if it was coming from one of the other ships via a speaker.

The Admiral's shipmates look very 'rubber maskish' too.

Giving them a bit of facial animation and mixing in some humans into the background might give the big ship a less empty and more realistic look.

Yeah the "ship" looks more like a set. I'm all for subtle enhancements throughout RotJ.

I hate to be a swine but if you get a chance doubleofive, that long list of yours needs to get a bit longer.

Could you break it down into different pages as it takes a long time to load with all those mockups etc?

It might help if we figured out what's missing.

i'll have a look over the thread when I get a chance, I'm not sure when your list was last updated.

Why?  The use of the rank or number system?

The observation that it just sounds like some American bloke and that the creature's gives hardly any indication that the sound is coming from it's head.

At least Ackbar is doing his Sir Robin Day impersonation which makes him sound a bit like some alien creature attempting to speak English (or whatever they are calling it in the Extended Universe). At least his face (especially his mouth) and body move like he is the source of his dialogue.

Making the line come over the radio connects that ship to the larger fleet (like the pilot chatter in the Yavin base during the first Death Star attack).

As the line currently plays out, it sounds like an unalien alien throwing his voice out of a mask-like head on a hardly manned bridge of an empty ship that has little connection with the larger fleet.

Apparently this never got posted, but I tried to say earlier that I will no longer be updating the list, and would love if someone were to take it elsewhere. It's just too big, and I have enough on my plate, hobby-wise. Sorry.

Agreed!

Anybody got any ideas on how to make the fish-head-things more realistic? I dig the designs and I think the animatronic work on the lead one is really cool, but,  they just look so rubbery and fake! I've always accepted the look because I grew up with the film and  it looked quite convincing to me as a child. But, I recently watched the trilogy with the girlfriend and she couldn't help but bust up laughing every time those fish guys were on screen, and said it totally took her out of the movie (well, lots of things in Jedi took her out of the movie). The eyes look around, it blinks, ect. and those things look good. So what can be done to make it look less rubbery? And something has to be done about the lip sync! a mouth casually bobbing up and down hardly matches the bubbling voice and dialog.

I might do a section on my DA page of everyone's uploads and mockups.

I will use your mockup/ideas descriptions for making my life a lot easier 005 if you dont mind :)

Is anyone have a better idea?

(before bingo replies about the fluid of the topic including the rest of posts its something i cant do as far i concern for the pictures with a basic tagline)

An Empire Strikes Back suggestion to throw out there. I think some of the 2004 dialogue for the Vader-Emperor conversation could possibly be rearranged to improve the scene a bit:

VADER: What is thy bidding, my master?

EMPEROR: There is a great disturbance in the Force.

VADER: I have felt it.

EMPEROR: Luke Skywalker.

VADER: Yes, my master.

EMPEROR: The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi.

VADER: He’s just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him.

EMPEROR: He destroyed the Death Star. He could destroy us.

VADER: If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally.

EMPEROR: Yes…yes…he would be a great Sith. Can it be done?

VADER: He will join us or die, master.

Three points to justify it: first, it's never made sense to me that Vader or Palpatine would consider Luke a "new" enemy several years after he saved Leia and destroyed the Death Star. Second, the line about Luke destroying the Death Star makes it a bit more substantive of a conversation by having Palpatine provide an actual counter-argument to Vader's protest. Third, I like the idea of working the word "Sith" into ESB and/or ROTJ once or twice.
