Wait a minute, so if you don't buy the full saga set you don't get ANY bonus features? WTH? So if I want the OT and its deleted scenes I have to buy everything?! That's really dumb, I'm sorry.

I agree. Even though I feel tempted now to buy the full saga, I think discs 7 and 8 should be available on their respective trilogies.

With every new information I'm more and more convinced, that I won't be able to use those blu-rays for my edits :-(

The rhyming slang usage in that review is all off (you aren't supposed to mention the word that rhymes with the 'encoded' word, you never say "Plates of meat" you just say "Plates").

I guess we will find out in the fullness of time if his recollections on the variations versions of this film are as off or if it's yet another Lucas tweak.

There has been a press event in Hamburg, Germany about the blu-rays.

While the article is in german language it mainly focuses on the work that went in restoring the german audio for this release.

The article speaks about they were showing footage (short scenes from the hexalogy and some bonus content). Besides that it is only PR-bla bla.

1. Lisp problematic

When the german audio was remixed for the 1997 SE, a double-used filter deEsser caused a lisp effect to almost everys actor voice. That was hearable in the cinemas in 1997 and on all SE home video releases and SE broadcasts. The lisp problem was brought up by many fans to Lucasfilm.

The official explanation back then was that the house carrying the 70mm german audio masters burned down and hence inferior sources for the remix have to be used instead.

The 2004 OT DVDs suffer from the same audio problems.

Now with fixing it for the blu-rays they admit there has always been better sources avaiable!

2. Dialog

There are a few scenes in the OT, where some lines of dialog are missing in the german releases.

Yavin 4 - Luke & Han arguing about Han should join the rebellion

According to the article the complete dialog for that scene was recorded and there in the german cinema mix. [comment: But due to unknown reasons it's never fully featured on a single home video release.]

There is another scene, where important dialog is missing. Imagine Leia & Han talking the same but without the sentence 'they are tracking us.' But the article doesn't cover that scene-dialog.

Several lines of dialog from 3PO are missing in ESB on the 2004 OT DVDs, which are featured in the OUT. That needs to be taken care of for the blu-rays.

The best part of the article: there is no kenkraly2007 comment! ;)

Star Wars: A New Hope Matthew Wood, sound mixer on the project from Skywalker Sound had to go back to the original ADR voice recordings to recapture the dialogue. In doing so, he got to hear the conversations between Sir Alec Guinness and George Lucas that took place between takes, on matters including the philosophy of the Force. This is not on the Blu-ray.

Dear god I hope this isn't true.

This is new, but not surprising.
I seriously doubt this. I just watched the Jabba scenes on Harmy's Despecialized and he is surprisingly expressive for a giant puppet, which is what makes him so great. Until we have a frame-by-frame analysis, I wouldn't believe this. Besides, this is someone who hasn't noticed the FREAKING BEAK in the Sarlacc in the last 14 years.

Yeah, that seems like a lot of effort, but also I wouldn't be surprised. They probably saw what Ady did with Greedo and other characters and did it themselves. We shall see...

I saw Star Wars in 1977. Many, many, many times. For 3 years it was just Star Wars...period. I saw it in good theaters, cheap theaters and drive-ins with those clunky metal speakers you hang on your window. The screen and sound quality never subtracted from the excitement. I can watch the original cut right now, over 30 years later, on some beat up VHS tape and enjoy it. It's the story that makes this movie. Nothing? else.

I don't have HD yet, so I couldn't get the Blurays even if I wanted to.  If I'm to offer informed commentary on the new mixes, someone's going to have to rip the audio and send it to me—preferably the core DTS 1509 kbps portion so I can send it to my receiver from the computer via S/PDIF.  Though listening to it will probably make me ill rather quickly, I'd be happy to perform a full analysis of exactly how it sucks.  ;)  Just putting that out there in case anyone feels like doing that.

It does seem likely that it will be at least somewhat better than the 2004 version, but I seriously doubt it will come anywhere near the 70mm mix for dynamics or sound quality, or any of the other things that make that version as good as it is.

As much as I value your opinion, this is the point where I suppose I should point out that this would be piracy, and therefore against the rules of the forum.

But there's so much bullshit surrounding this whole release event that to be quite honest I'm completely "meh" about the whole thing.

So I guess it's ok to pirate this thing then.

Ah yes, I suppose it would be; I didn't really think of that as I typed it . . .

Okay then, any such thing should be confined to PM's, and names shall not be revealed.  ;)

Yeah...I thought this was well known.  It's a 9 disc set, the movies on the first 6 discs and the bonus features on the last three.  The OT set and the PT set are each just the 3 discs.  The only bonus features for those are the two commentaries on each movie.

In defense of Lucasfilm, that's not dumb, that's a smart sales strategy.  And other franchise releases (both DVD and Blu) have done something similar.  It sucks, but it's business.

Is it?  You're assuming at least half as many people will buy the whole set to get these bonus discs than people that would buy the OT set to get the bonus disc.

I won't be buying anything... but it would be tempting to get the OT if the bonus disc was included.  Maybe your numbers work out- maybe there are 2-3 people now buying the full set for every person like me not buying anything.  Maybe not.

Moth3r's not saying it's okay.  Just saying that he's not going to throw the book at hen.
