Chance to talk to Lucasfilm about the new SW Blu-rays. What do YOU want to know?

I found that this morning and was finally spurred to creating my own HTF account. Now I've posted a few questions in. Will they be addressed/answered? Probably not. Interestingly, many have already commented on the lack of OOT and the re-use of 04 masters and the errors. I recognized a few OT'ers but mostly it was regular folk.

I want to know why the original films cannot be released in a restored quality on dvd/bluray.

And no i will not except its an oxymoron as an answer.

Especially since Spielberg, Scott and others can release multiple versions of their films on home video without some kind of childish "i will do what i want they are my movies" foot stomping tirade.

I've had a HTF account for several years, so I had to go right over and speak my piece. My post:

As someone who has been one of George Lucas' best customers since the 1980s (I've lost count as to how many versions of the original Star Wars Trilogy I've purchased over the years from VHS to LD to DVD),
I feel I have a right as well as an obligation to put in my 2 cents.....

My only real concern about the upcoming blu-rays is why the 1977-1983 trilogy won't be included.

Other than that, I have no concerns nor questions about a set of films which are no longer the same films that changed the course of film history, won multiple Academy Awards, nor inspired my life-long love of film.

It is endlessly frustrating that films like Close Encounters and Blade Runner have blu-ray releases which include MULTIPLE versions of those films, films that while influential, are in no way as universally loved or revered as the '77-'83 Star Wars trilogy. Yet the films of THAT trilogy only exist on DVD (and now blu-ray, apparently) as single, yet ever-evolving, bastardized shadows of their former selves. Never mind the lack of regard for the fans who would prefer to watch the original, ground-breaking versions of these films in this wonderful new Blu-Ray format...

INSANE.

Mods- this thread is sort of dying here in this forum (it has nothing to do with fan preservations anyhow).

Can it be moved to the general forum?

Thanks.

I looked in over there.  Interesting concept and very nice to see the passion for the theatrical versions.  However,  nearly every one of those questions will be ignored.  They'll pick the few they want to use as a way promote the product - extras, sound, color, packaging, etc.  That visit is about revenue stream, not Lucas' suppression of of cinematic art & history.

Yeah, but we can use their hype against them, right?  How many people are reading the other questions- even if they're not going to be addressed in the actual Q&A?

If the majority of the questions are about the supression of the O-OT... how telling will it be when they pretend those questions didn't even exist.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

Rewrite the Prequels!

The suppression of the OOT has got to be the biggest of all elephants in the room when it comes to the subject of the availability of motion pictures on home video.

I am truly convinced that the only reason Lucas continues to withhold it is money. He'll make that much more in the long run, he already has (see: GOUT).

Has this Q&A happened yet?

I do agree with Anchorhead that all questions about the OOT will be ignored or inadequately answered. However, maybe you could obtain some insight into the opinions within LFL with certain leading questions?

"In the recent Blu-ray Deleted Scenes Teaser on StarWars.com, I was thrilled to see color images of Luke on Tatooine watching the blockade runner battle. I would like to ask Kayleen if the Blu-ray Discs include any of the scenes from the original theatrical versions that were later deleted, for example the original approach to Mos Eisley that was deleted in the 1997 Special Edition, or the scene with Sebastian Shaw appearing as the ghost of Anakin Skywalker that was deleted in the 2004 DVD release?"

I'm sure someone else could come up with a cleverer question.

I have some initial answers and will be putting together a full report which will take a few days after I finish digesting some of what I saw and heard.    Please note that I won't be providing any additional info until I have a chance to write everythign up.  In the meantime here is some info for you to digest:

They used the digital files from the 2004 release as a starting point for the Blu-ray release.  They then made a lot of tweaks and fixes:

  • Light sabers?  Check.
  • "Humdinger Glitch"? Check
  • Color timing?  Check
  • Other effect cleanup? Check

The audio for all the films was tweaked.  It was readily apparent that it was a labor of love for Matthew Wood who worked with Ben Burtt.  Episode 4 got the most attention since originally it was a mono mix with no separation.  He went back to the original masters to make the new mix.  George Lucas and Ben Burtt were heavily involved in the entire process including balancing the score against the effects.  There are a few places where Matthew found some snippets of background dialog that was never used on the masters and he put them in.  I'll have additional details as part of our expanded coverage.

I had the opportunity to view some deleted scenes and WOW there is some good stuff there, some great deleted scenes and alternate takes.  They have not been "restored" and quality varies clip by clip.

The packaging is very nice. The complete series set is a book with thick cardboard pages and great art (I have pics of each page that I will post with my complete write up. If you opt for either of the three film sets its a standard three disc Blu-ray case in a cardboard sleeve.

As to the original cuts?  The company line is this is what George Lucas's vision for the films is.  While its up to everyone to vote with their wallet, In my opinion if you boycott this release because of that you are going to be missing a otherwise fantastic release.

The Humdinger is fixed? But it's in the previews....same as the "fixed" sabers and color timing....

It would be like a dream if it turned out all the previews were not finalized Blu-Ray set footage and everything would be fixed unlike in the trailers. However, that would mean the bluray.com people were right. :-(

I think that is a tfn type troll who got banned here.

The name sounds familiar.

The name is taken from one of the Brian Daley Han Solo books, so it could be a coincidence.

Heck, part of inspiration for my name is from Daley's radio adaptations, where Chewie is sometimes called "The Wook". ;)

EDIT: Or not!

Where were you in '77?

It doesn't look like he left on bad terms at all. It looks like the last time he was here, he was asking for someone to upload PaulisDead's Vintage Edit (which he now admits over at HTF). He says the "tone" here has changed since the Blu-Rays were announced.

Really? I find that very hard to believe. The tone here hasn't changed since I started posting in '06. He got what he came here for so now he's free to insult the OT members on another site.
