Very interesting footage.

But please, all people considering to buy the set now...

Please DO NOT !

Get it somewhere else, ca. 3 hours after the set has been released.

I hope that faneditors won´t get too excited, putting every single DS into their cuts.

(if they should be restored to decent quality at all)

Especially the binocular & Anchorhead Luke scenes shouldn´t ever, NEVER ever, be included into STAR WARS.

It messes the structure up badly, Luke acts like a douche, and it doesn´t work as character introduction.

NO

Either buy or don't buy.  But don't get it somewhere else.

And learn how to use "its" properly.

It changes the structure but it could be made to work in an interesting way.

ESB starts with Luke looking up at the sky in much the same manner which doesn't harm that film and I disagree that Luke comes across as a means of irrigating a major orifice.

He comes across as a kid who works on a farm but wants to be somewhere else.

Sure in the theatrical version we get enough information to come to that conclusion but the deleted material doesn't detract from that and his friendship with Biggs has a pay off in the Death Star battle.

Putting that back in would make the film different but as long as the original theatrical version was maintained, alternate versions (including the SE's and fanedits) don't harm that.

It's Lucas sinking the original theatrical versions that brought us all here in the first place not a shared distaste for anything else.

Don´t call me a Pirate.

I do not own a single pirated copy of a movie.

I rent, buy or watch on TV/at the movies.

All I have is some fan-edits and I do own the lousy 2004 box.

OK, WATCH them somewhere else if that makes you more happy.

Whatever, they are just some deleted scenes not an entire movie and most of us (including me) already spent enough money on low-quality Lucasfilm products.

oh, and I fixed the sentence.

Sorry, I was a bit hasty in thinking you were saying to get the set itself somewhere else.

I'm sure the deleted scenes will pop up online for watching, the only question is how long before they are taken down.

And thanks for fixing the sentence. ;-)

sorry, should have made it more clear that I was talking about the deleted scenes.

BTW

you´re welcome :-)

+1

It can make for an alternate ANH experience. Personally I think Luke's introduction in the film as it is, seems much more heroic; however, I think calling him a douche is too harsh... He seems more like a wimp. In any case, despite the Blu Ray set's shortcomings, I'll be interested in seeing the deleted scenes, even just to see Luke's introduction with its actual audio...

Also, that wampa clip looks very exciting. If it's in good enough quality and complete, it's bound to end up in countless ESB edits...

Think TMBTM will ever reconsider re-doing that with these new deleted scenes? They still seem grindhouse-y but just in color. Then he could have a chance to improved the aged film effect that was absent on the Interactive Boardgame clips.

Guys, they just released the trailer for the Prequel's deleted scenes! Looks good! Could really add a lot to some fan-edits!

Unless you wanted the movie to be "American Graffitti in space", or make a visual companion to the radio drama. (Anchorhead that would be right up your alley...;)

Luke acts like a douche,

Hey! You could have broken this! He just seems a bit more whiny but at least where this is coming from is understandable.

and it doesn´t work as character introduction.

It can, but it does wreck the flow established by the editing team.

Unless..you wanted to restore the award winning, heart stopping, positively electrifying: Rough Edit!

Ha! Very funny... Still, I do wish that they finished the effects on the Episode III deleted scenes where Shaak Ti dies. It could be good for fan edits if it wasn't so rough.

That's something I can think about. Although I don't particulary like making "version 2" of my fanedits (exept for the silent Star Wars versions).

But considering I made a mistake in letting white lines effects above the black bars at the begining of my edit, maybe it'll be an "excuse" to fix everything.

The thing I could not change (I think) is the black and white intro with the camera zooming to luke.

Surely you could just cut from greyscale to colour during the scene?

Because I'm more familiar with the larger story now, I'd dig a version like that.  It could be done (provided you have the footage).  The story starts one day sooner than the film, but it's still handled in such a way that the central character is introduced properly.  The isolated\outcast\dreamer farm boy is established immediately and is the main focus of the first chapter.

It opens with him listening to a recruiting presentation to the Imperial Space Academy, alone, out in that tech dome we all know so well.  A friend comes over and then they go to visit all their other friends (Camie, Fixer, Deke). Once they're there, Deke makes fun of him for listening to the recruiting presentation and  they all tease him about his higher aspirations. The friend that came over to visit him is the first one to turn on him.

That all establishes the character we know and sets the ground work for his being seen as an outsider, even by his only friends.  They also manage to name check Biggs so that you know Luke misses him.  I don't know about there ever being footage shot for anything like that.  I'd have to reread Kaminski's book or the original script.

The second day into the story is the part we all know from seeing the footage through the years -  the vaporator scene - "shape it up you guys" - watching the space battle - Biggs coming back - the two of them saying goodbye, etc.

I've read plenty of articles and interviews through the years discussing the pacing of the 77 version and their thoughts on introducing the characters in the way & order they did.  I certainly have no issue with the 77 film.  It works very well.  However, I've grown to prefer the NPR.  A fan version rearranged to fit the NPR would be something I'd certainly give a look.

Sometimes the purpose of a fanedit is not to supplant the original, but simply to provide a different perspective.  Would you download a silent film or multiple PT edits simply because you want your one and only true tale?  Or perhaps do you simply enjoy a different take on the same basic story?  I, for one, would have no problem with a fanedit incorporating these scenes.

Quite frankly, I would trust the judgement of the senior film crew from 1976; the cutting of these scenes were for the best.

I understand what you are saying, and I enjoyed the way the Anchorhead scenes were presented in the novelization, but I think that following the droids almost completely uninterrupted for the first 30 minutes or so was one of the most bold and unique decisions made in the film. I don't feel Luke is introduced too late - with only a few lines of dialogue and a great visual (the famous binary sunset) we know all we need to of this aspirations and disappointments.

Just my $0.02.

Interesting. I think a lot of us old guys are obsessed with integrating the Biggs scenes since they were so prominent in the early literature supplements (the novelization, the storybook etc.).

I really miss the read along records. "You will know it is time to turn the page when you hear R2D2 beep like this; 'dweet-doo-doo, dwee-dweet'. Let's begin now..."

Aaah!  I listened to that record all the time as a kid!  Man I wish I still had it.

Thanks for the reminder, I couldn't remember if my mind was playing tricks on me or not but I had sworn there was a picture of Biggs on Tatooine in there somewhere.  I thought it was odd that that part, and the dialogue didn't match the movie.  "Smuggling Rebel sympathizers through an Imperial blockade is no picnic!"

That could be Obi-Wan's first reaction to meeting R2D2.  And I think 005 should provide the voice.

On second thought, maybe it should just be an outtake or a deleted scene for TRM.
