Ok, first, what the hell is this thing? Why is it only perched on the wall in the scene where Han and Luke get "sentenced" and nowhere else....who's genius idea was it to mount a giant tongue on the wall.......and who else wants to see it gone?

I remember that thing was used as an enemy in the SNES game Super Return Of The Jedi! And, yeah, it's totally stupid looking.

I remember seeing pics of C3PO right up in front of that thing. for promo shots for whatever.

Author

probably this. while it IS cool for it to be a slug sort of creature.....its completely retarded for it to be hanging on the ceiling like that and trying to lick C3P0

I like that especially if it could be animated subtly inching across the curve of the arch.

I really like special edition alterations which take the original idea and just make it more special instead of always throwing new stuff in for no good reason.

It could be one of Jabba's relatives up there for we know.

Maybe that's what Hutts look like when the are very young (ignoring the Clone Wars animated version) or how they end up when they are very, very old.

Pretty sure this will help out with long-wished-for versions of the original trilogy... !!

The footage looks in a real state.

I'm not sure how much of it could be used in a fan edit anyway, even if it does look interesting (especially the bunker material).

The bunker stuff looked the cleanest out of that lot. I wonder how it will compare overall to the restoration job Adywan did on the deleted scene he included on the ANH:R DVD.

Assuming that that's Luke's hand, was that communicator thing built into Luke's robotic hand?

If so was the hand not that badly damaged before the sandstorm was cut?

Luke having a hidden communicator could have led to some interesting plot points.

With the dedication shown in the preservations on this site, I find it hard to believe that this stuff can't be cleaned up by someone intent on including it in a fanedit.  It seems to me that someone could create a preservation disc of all the deleted scenes for all to use and alter for their edits.  Of course, I'm volunteering someone for something I couldn't possibly do.  I just don't like all the nay-saying.  I personally am very excited to see all this deleted stuff.

This mockup doesn't quite illustrate the idea I have in mind but what if instead of having the Rebels fight their way down after getting through the backdoor they fought their way through and up so they came out next to (or more ideally under) the dish.

Then the explosives could just knock the dish out (a falling dish could look more arresting than a giant explosion, the film has enough of those already).

Lucas seems obsessed with blowing up reactors when just snapping the dish would get the job done.

I used Angel's elements for this mockup which I hope get's the general idea across.

Very interesting alternative. I like it.

I want to see this dude added to the fight.

Red 3

And this LADY re-dubbed with a lady voice (as "BigBadGMan" pointed out).

That would make the rebel pilots as a whole much more interesting.

Idea I just had:

Completely re-do the opening to ROTJ, with a newly filmed scene of Bothan spies entering an Imperial facility and stealing the DSII plans along with the info about the Emperor's itinerary. The crawl can easily be adjusted as necessary, something about "Even now some of the Rebellion's operatives are seeking to capture information necessary for a new assault. . ." Many of them die (obviously), but one makes it to their extraction point, where he boards some kind of transport/shuttle and escapes.

GUY ON SHUTTLE: Did you get it?

THE BOTHAN WHO LIVED: Everything we need, and then some.

He pulls out a little holo-emitter and holds up the projection of the plans, on the left side of the camera. The shot then fades (okay, maybe a nice wipe...) to what we know as the ROTJ opening, with the DSII visually replacing the orange plans.

Problems:

  • Writing, Filming, Directing, etc a somewhat long and involved sequence that would involve Bothans (costume/makeup) and Stormtroopers and probably Officers as well as special effects. I mean, we're talking a ~5-min short film with music and blasters and everything. And it all has to look like it fits in the same movie as the rest of ROTJ. This is obviously a major problem.
  • Characters we've never seen before and won't see again, unless you can insert them into the Briefing (or we conflate/undisambiguate Bothans with Prunefaces)
  • Does it even feel like Star Wars?
  • I'm sure someone will tell me it's world-shrinkage or something

Advantages:

  • Exciting intro to a movie that starts pretty slow
  • Shows us another side of the Rebellion
  • Adds length to a movie that, after meeting the judicious fan-editor, is probably shorter than the others in the Saga.

So, thoughts?

bringing the briefing characters into the opening could be good.

the shot of a hologram fading into the real thing isn't that star warsy, although it is cool.

i would like to see the entire saga brought together in this film, so some PT hooks would be good, even if it opens in coruscant perhaps?

some good stuff with this guy.

Aah, that's a good idea - The "Imperial Facility" could be something on Couruscant itself. I imagine following the insertion vehicle down into the City, either covertly or literally blazing past defenses, could be pretty exciting.

As for the plans--->DSII fade, I agree that it doesn't feel Star Warsy, but I wanted a good way to transition to Vader scene.

Hey!  I thought I said it first!  I demand royalties and rights when you mention redubbing the woman's voice!  In reality, I agree whole-heartedly.  Not only is it more PC to have aliens and women, but it also shows that the Rebellion has neither the resources nor the bigotry to be picky and maintain uniformity when choosing pilots.  It makes for a much more interesting Rebellion.

Check out the rough draft of ROTJ - this is exactly the beginning of the movie (Endor is a moon of Coruscant, or Had Abbadon as it's known in this version).

About the Mon Cal pilot, I'm virtually certain that's a B-Wing cockpit but it may not match what's shown in the film (similar to how the other ones don't necessarily match) - Hasbro apparently is putting out a figure of this guy and calls him an A-Wing pilot.  In any case, at least the B-Wing pilot footage will be available.

I was scratching my head for a comparative scene for my dish collapse idea and then I remembered (how could I forget?) Goldeneye.

Imagine that dish collapse in a forest at daytime and not only does the scene seem more interesting but you also get rid of the mega-explosion problem.

The only problem is the backdoor explosion now becomes redundant but I'm sure the footage could be used in a different context.

It's not world shrinking 'cause you're not re-using characters or tying things together in a way the film hasn't already established. But as far as"feeling like Star Wars"... it would be the only time in the OT I can think of that we spend so much time without one of our principal characters. We never really any information that happens outside of our good-guy/bad-guy circles. It's a cool idea and I think it would be a great fan film. But I don't think it belongs in ROTJ.

Agree all the way. This has to happen.

Also really like Bingo's idea about the dish!
