Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1 — Page 7

Harmy, I take it that you are using footage sourced from the NTSC version of the GOUT. Well for some reason the PAL GOUT ROTJ uses a different master and has a bit more detail than the NTSC version so it may be worth using the PAL version for this scene. I also noticed that there is a small SE change still in that clip. When Leia and Chewie enters and the guy is knocked to the floor, you could originally see the actors neck pop out from underneath the mask, but in the SE they blacked this out

Thanks, Ady, I know about the PAL version of Jedi being better but I'm actually using the shot from DJ's project Blu and I'm not sure but I think he did use the PAL GOUT for that one. But even if he didn't, I did use the PAL GOUT in my ROTJ Reconstruction for that shot and it looks pretty much the same.

As to that change, I'm pretty sure it's just because of the crushed blacks. You can still see the neck in the SE but only vaguely (not really in the YOUTUBE video, becuase of the compression but you can see it in the HQ file.)

Also, here is an HQ video of the smoke scene, so you guys can see what I mean. It shows the shot with the GOUT element added without the smoke, then with the smoke and then side by side:

When compare the neck of the guy on my GOUT DVD and the 2004 DVD I can see almost no difference. I think this scene is not 'Special Editioned'.

I like both Jabbas, in the sample the version with more and the version with less smoke. I find it difficult to decide witch version I would use. No matter what version you decide to use, Hamry, I like it better than the Chewie scene here.

Thank you,Harmy. I just watched your 720p Empire and was so happy to see my buddy Darth march out and say "Bring my shuttle."...just one of many parts it was so great to see again and in HD. I have a HD projector and the picture was great. Let Mr. Lucas do what he wants with the Films cause I'll always be thankful for his vision...but I think the 3D versions are a BAAAADDDD idea!  So as long as there are hard working artists such as you and Adywan striving to recreate and in many ways improve the look of the OT, I will be forever grateful.

Harmy, DUDE,... its fine!

The first version is just fine with me. The GOUT footage is brief enough... Maybe I'm not that picky.... *shrug*

If you are going to use the second one (you know, with all that smoke) make sure you add a loud *FART* sound just before it engulfs the screen! ....make sure in the 5.1 mix that it comes from Jabba's direction... (jk)

That's a good idea, I'll do that but I'm not so good with sound mixing, so I'm not sure how well I'll be able to intergrate it into the 5.1 mix.

I can't notice anything but then I am not sure what I am looking for in the first place. xD

Once this is all done Harmy, be sure to take a well deserved break. I don't know how you or anyone else here is able to continuously work on these movies without getting sick to death of them. :-P

I am definitely taking a break from Despecializing STAR WARS when this is done but I already have a few other projects in mind, that I'm itching to start working on. 1st I want to attempt to turn the HBO Game of Thrones series season 1 into a 3hr epic (with 2.35:1 AR). Then I'd quite like to update my Very Special Edition with the third Robot Chicken and Family Guy parodies - not sure whether to start from scratch or not. Then because the Extended Editions are now finally on Blu-Ray, I might go back to my scraped LOTR edits, and then, , when Harry Potter 7.2 comes out on Blu, I'm gonna try to make both parts into one reasonably good film, because I went to see part 2 yesterday and I though it was pretty awful but I quite liked a lot of part 1.

Harmy, I haven't gotten in on the fight, but I'm very pleased with the smoke-covered Jabba. It has to be better than not seeing him burp at all. It would be the ONE SHOT I'd be sad about every time I watched it, and you don't want me to have a shot like that. ;-)

Oh, right (this is a ROTJ thread, so I was confused). No, I'm hoping to do SW v1.2  while people are reviewing ROTJ workprint.

The smoke idea was great! You only need to remove the black dusts (film dirt) from the GOUT Jabba.

Well, that's the whole idea of adding the smoke. The GOUT shot is so grainy and dirty, that there's no way of removing the grain without turning it into a blurry blob, so I added the smoke to conceal it. It works much better when put into the film with sound and the subtitle, than it does on it's own.

Oh, sorry, I'm talking about the little black or white points on the GOUT source (dust and scratches)... :-)

Harmy, seriously, have you considered a "morph" transition effect instead of a fade between the two shots?

It may make it less noticable.

 You know,  a Morph ...

Maybe I'm just talking outa' my ass but morphing in and out between the GOUT footage might make the transition less noticeable...
