What do you LIKE about the Prequels?

As the title says, at some point in those films there may have been something in it that you liked.

It could be anything from the way a shot was composed, a special effect that you liked, a line of dialogue or anything else. Anything minor or major to the films.

I liked one scene towards the end of The Phantom Menace where the door opens to reveal Darth Maul standing there and the music starts up.  The two jedi look at him and there's a real sense that something awesome is about to unfold.  It really built up the tension.

Unfortunately something awesome doesn't unfold. What we actually get is a fast-paced and well choreographed fight scene which is inter-cut with three other dull or silly storylines.

I didn't care for the rest of the prequel trilogy.

Jar Jar aside, I'm probably the only one on this forum who actually liked the prequels ¬_¬ I wish they weren't a huge bad-CGI-fest, but somehow I'm able to look past that and really get into them in a way that I probably shouldn't. Maybe it's only because I missed out seeing the original trilogy in theatres, and seeing Eps 2 and 3 on the big screen was a pretty big event for me.

the score and the production design. everything "technical" was pretty brilliant but anything requiring the humanity and judgement of good direction sucked.

i always remember that hamill narrated making of, when he goes on about luke turning off his targeting computer because technology won't save us. i guess that sentiment was utterly lost on lucas whilst making the prequels, which makes their existence all the more tragic/ironic in my mind.

Utter futility, at least here. By its very nature, this site attracts people who, by and large, are quite hostile to the prequels. You might as well ask Rush Limbaugh for a positive comment about Democrats: it ain't gonna happen.

Not true - there are people here who enjoy certain elements of the prequels.  And in proper fanedited forum, they are actually somewhat enjoyable to me.

I thought the IDEA of the fall of Darth Vader was pretty awesome.  I mean, the Lucas apologists have a bit of a point that the basic premise is pretty epic on a Greek tragedy type of scale.  It had SO much potential.  Unfortunately, the motivation for his turn (along with so many other of the MOST important things like dialogue, script, acting, and directing) was done SO poorly that it mitigates any and all awesomeness that could have been.

The only other thing I can think of at the moment was that I liked Ewan McGregor as young Obi-wan.  He did a pretty good job convincing me he was a young Alec Guinness, considering what he had to work with.  I think had the films lived up to their potential, he'd have been REALLY great!

That's really all I can think of.  But at this point, it's been so long since I've watched even a clip from a prequel that I really don't remember much at all.  And I prefer it that way...  Less baggage to carry into my viewing the OT.

Hold on to your seats folks.  I have something positive to say regarding the only prequel I've seen.

Because I'd seen screen-grabs of the SEs,  I was skeptical about Phantom.  I went into the film not expecting much, but thinking maybe it might be ok.

Here's the positive;  At the start of Phantom, I thought this was a great shot.  Composition, execution, and the feel all seemed worthy of the film I experienced back in 1977.

Worthy ended about two minutes later.  These days the shot  sometimes pops into my head as a setting that my imagination assigns to some of the EU I've read.  It's a great shot and my memory held on to it.  The rest of the film, however, is all but gone.

Eh, I don't hate them, I just think it would be cooler if they never happened. I would like them to go away now, like relatives who stayed too long. Obi- Wan and the emperor had many good moments, so there's that.

Also, Phantom Menace really does have a level of lush detail that none of the other 5 really have, so it's a unique mix of styles. a political story, a kid's adventure and a space-travelogue, you probably won't ever see that again.

- Padme's skanky wardrobe in AOTC

- Darth Maul

- both TPM lightsabre duels (I thought they did have some emotional content)

- Watto

- (occasionally) Ewan MacGregor's portrayal of Obi Wan

- the sound effect of those mines that Slave-1 dropped during the battle in the asteroids in AOTC

The John Williams score.  It's about the only thing I can hold on an equal level with the OT.

Premise of Palpatine's rise to power.

Coruscant and the senate building.

Opening scene of ROTS.  I would have liked it even more if it incorporated practical effects.

Naboo.  Beautiful planet and city.

Montage at the end of ROTS.

Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, and Liam Neeson were good choices for their roles.

Jango Fett vs. Obi-Wan.

Qui-Gon.

Obi-Wan (mostly).

The overall story concept.

Darth Maul.

Dooku's saber.

Christopher Lee.

Battle droids (until they started talking).

The design of the clones.

Most of the Republic equipment, actually.

Naboo. Just seems like a neat city to walk around in.

Coruscant. The entire planet is one big city.

I'm sure there are a few other things, as well.

I, in general, like the prequels as well. But I like them in the same way that I liked games like Star Wars: Galaxies or Knights of the Old Republic II in that the idea is fundamentally sound, and a few things were executed pretty well, but overall they just weren't fully realized and poorly executed and suffered because of it. Which is sad, because they all could have been pretty awesome.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

The meaningless stupidity that is Attack of the Clones.

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.
