I was just wondering if anybody still needed an LD captured. I’ve acquired some gear for capturing some (Non-SW) discs that I want to archive, a Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle, a used Sony 10bit TBC and I will be able to borrow a Pioneer HLD-X9 as a playback device.
I do have the Definitive Collection as well as the SE box sets lying around. Are there any discs still worth capturing, or are the GOUT-based projects better anyway?
Had I that equipment, and a bunch of free time, I wouldn't capture my DC box.
I'd reach for my Special Collection from Japan. Next probably my SWE -- the one pressed by Technidisc in 1993 from the AR-corrected '92 master.

And if I was still bored after all that, I'd dig up my copy of Telling Lies in America because a 'scope version has never been released in the digital age

Anyway, why "10-bit TBC"? Does it matter how many "bits" a Time Base Corrector uses? (A 10-bit ADC would make more sense, but surely that's built-in to the Intensity Shuttle?)

I'd capture the laserdisc of Dracula, starring Frank Langella. The DVD release has reduced colors. My laserdisc capture from my crappy Pioneer deck - while successfully bringing out the color palette - left a lot of detail to be desired.
Unfortunately, I'm not the owner of the disc. Someone on the forum loaned it to me a couple of years ago, and I can't remember who.

American Graffiti. On the DVD version the opening shot was replaced with a cgi sky and they changed the color timing and title card ,plus they used DVNR.
The updated version may or may not be on the signature collection discs, so capping the first issue letterbox THX release before any changes would be nice.
THX 1138 is already in good hands on these boards.
The Phantom Menace theatrical cut won't be on the Blu ray, perhaps someone can take another shot at capping the laserdisc, or using the blu ray and editing the video and audio back to the theatrical, but that is a reconstruction not a preservation.

The blu-ray released next week has (by all accounts) taken care of the latter problem. While the original titlecard is certainly worth preserving (and possibly reconstructing), it wouldn't exactly justify watching the entire film at LD resolution if you had the choice.
And Adywan already did a theatrical TPM.

A fan-reconstruction of both the original theatrical cut and the 1978 re-release would be cool. Do we know if the blu-ray is the 25th anniversary edition or have the bearded one altered something again?

It's quite hard to say at the moment - the only proper review so far skips the issue of the film's history of revisions entirely, and just gives a neutral commentary on this disc's AV qualities. From comments on the angry HTF thread it sounds as if this might be derived from the same HD master prepared for the previous DVD, so content-wise it will in all probability be the same.

The Intesity can capture in 10bit, although it's apparently pretty pointless with analog SD sources, the latitude isn't there anyway. I do it anyway. Best practice would be to make sure that you set up the gear so that highlights aren't blown out and blacks aren't crushed and worry about CC later. The quality is amazing though. The old pinnacle card I used to have was noticably worse.
I'm no expert in how a TCB actually works (other than it does correct the time base of the signal), but it says 10 bit right there on the device. This is a refurbished thing I got from a gear sale of a video rental company. Nobody uses analog anymore I guess. I bought it to use it with VHS and Hi8 tapes, actually I was told to rather NOT use it with LDs. I still have to try it with the X9, but with my own CLD2950 it's actually pretty useless. I guess it has to do with the mastering of the LDs too, because if the timebase is flawless in the first place it doesn't degrade over time as it does on tapes.
Where could I get these Japanese pre-THX discs?
There is a copy of Star Wars on Ebay right now.
No copies of Empire or Jedi for sale at the moment, but the white bordered jackets are similar in appearance.

I know the X9 is a NTSC only device but so far no one has released the original trilogy in any other languages than english. the german gout dvds for example suck.
the german audio track on it is missing stuff, and it's ac3 only. instead of the german title crawls that have been made and shown in the cinemas the gout dvds use the english title crawl and have the german translation as dvd subtitles. so weak.

Lee Thorogood's NTSC releases have French and Spanish audio, and some of Harmy's work has Czech audio. I don't know of any German releases though.

In which you entertained both possibilities - I was eliminating the second.
Am I to take it that a laser transfer of the theatrical edit would in some way be preferable to an HD-derived reconstruction, even if that reconstruction is frame perfect? I consider myself a purist, but that's taking it to a ridiculous extreme.
