Well, Blade Runner was also only available on DVD in the DC version for like 10 years. I remember that I bought it on DVD and I wanted to see the original (which I prefer) a could only find it as LD rip (and a shitty one at that, nothing like the quality of LD transfers we're used to here).

But then of course they released a reference quality release of all versions, which may be one of the best home video releases to date.

The final destruction of star wars is complete with no restoration of the originals there is no viable film print for theatrical exhibition ever in the future, never mind no decent home video release. The films themselves will be forever lost.

Lucas self fulfilled mission to erase the originals from all but our childhood memories is complete.

Between what the AFI, BFI, the LOC, and the mysterious owner of the Boston Technicolor print have, lost isn't really accurate. Suppressed might be a better term.

I just love how their video player chokes up my browser!

And was that a new ROTJ FX shot right before Han yelling "yahoo!"?

And Blade Runner even had a good excuse, all the non-92 versions were tied up in legal hassles with Jerry Perenchio for years and years.

LOL I can see it when I paused it, Luke's blade seems to go THROUGH Vader's blade.  Wow, yeah, it looks pretty awful...

Thanks, SilverWook!

Well, that's exactly the same shot as in the 2004 DVD. And it's such an easy fix too. So if they didn't fix it for the trailer, I just can't imagine them acknowledging it as a mistake and fixing it for the BD.

Well I gotta say that I'm very unimpressed with this release from what I know of it so far. I can't see myself spending the cash to get this. First off, I would need to hear a lot of positive feedback on here about the image quality of the OT before I would want to spend the money. And honestly, I am very doubtful that they will have done anything to improve the color balancing, and it's still the special edition, which I pretty much hate anyways. I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in the prequels.

The only discs I am interested in of course is discs 8 and 9. And Lucas knows it, too. The fact that he's not releasing these discs with the OT set really shows you what he thinks of the Star Wars fans today. The only way to get the bonus discs is to buy all 6 films, and that's not gonna happen. So no extras if you just buy the OT box? No deal.

Also, the box art is pretty awful. The only half-way descent one is the OT box, and that's only because it reminds me of that John Berkey art that was posted here several pages ago. Why couldn't he just have used that? That's an awesome piece of art that I'm sure many of us here would have appreciated. Whatever happened to the great poster art?

I am glad to hear about the original Making of Star Wars/SPFX, etc. but very sad to hear no From Star Wars to Jedi. Another kick in the head. And of course we have no idea how these old docs will look until we see them ourselves - they might not look any better than what's already on the fan discs that many of us have had for years. The rest of the documentaries are ridiculous and a complete waste of space.

Am I surprised? No. But I am disappointed. I was hoping for once they might actually meet us half way and deliver some great extras with the OT. Instead, we get NO extras with the OT - we have to buy all 6 films! I already knew that we wouldn't get the original releases. There might be some neat deleted scenes perhaps, but 2 bonus discs are not worth $100.

Take a look at the Blu-Ray box set of Aliens that came out last year. Wow, what a set! I'm not even a fan of the last 2 films but it was such an incredible set with so many amazing extras that I ended up with the full collector's edition egg! And I don't even like 2 of the 4 films! But 2 versions of each film and endless hours of extras made this a must-buy set. Another example - the Blu-Ray set of Space:1999. An old half-forgotten sci-fi tv show from the 70's, yet restored to an amazing level of quality, with some very impressive extras. Yet Star Wars makes it's debut on Blu-Ray and most of the extras already sound utterly forgettable.

I'm more excited to see Empire:Revisited.

In her defense, the artwork seems to have been already done when she came along. There was probably a shortlist of four or five pre-selected potentials, which she then chose from; given Lucasfilm's recent history I doubt any of them were the nice Drew Struzan's. Maybe they have to pay more royalties if they use Drew's. (Because, you know, George Billionaire Lucas is a bit strapped for cash these days--he can't even afford to restore the most popular film in history. Poor guy. I hope he makes it through the recession.)

Space:1999 actually has a pretty healthy fanbase worldwide. (I still have my 1976 Mattel Eagle!) Conventions are still being held. There is even an ongoing fan edit  of the series that's pretty amazing, comparable to Adywan's work.

Gerry Anderson is essentially the George Lucas of tv in the U.K., and it's a safe bet his other cult shows will hit Blu Ray. Thunderbirds has been cited as an influence on the look of the current Clone Wars series

Lucas cannot be bothered with having a branching feature, or you could watch Phantom Menace in its theatrical version and they would include the theatrical audio as heard on the laserdisc.

Not my favorite film of all time however the theatrical cut is so much better than the DVD version which lags.

The only way i can watch the theater version is on laserdisc with burnt in subtitles and dubious picture quality for a late in the formats life Laserdisc release.

No.

Yeah, I did figure that out. Haven't watched Jedi in a while, and that player on the SW site was giving my browser fits, so it was impossible to pause or rewind for a detailed analysis. ;)

Actually it is only the ninth disc that is exclusive to the "Complete Saga" box.  The eighth disc will be available in the "Original Trilogy" box.

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

I want a blu-ray of the theatrical cut of TPM almost as much as I want blu-rays of the OOT!

SilverWook, thanks for the comment on Space:1999. I'm a huge fan myself, and I know the show has been very fortunate to have such a devoted fan base. I was certainly very amazed at the quality of the restoration work that was done on the Blu-Rays, and that restoration was done several years ago by the BBC.

There's just no excuse for these Star Wars films to look anything less than spectacular on Blu-ray. But between the fact that it's special editions only, and on top of that the awful color that we will most likely be getting, I just can't get excited about this.

Blade Runner got 4 versions for crying out loud! Including an amazing workprint version. Even E.T. got both versions released on DVD. Why are Star Wars fans consistently left behind? I consider my collection of fan-made Star Wars discs vastly superior to anything listed in the extras. The Editdroid set, Movealong's incredible vinyl "Story of Star Wars" discs, Building Empire, etc. - these are the kind of things that Star Wars fans desire. Not a 90-minute documentary on "cosplay".

^Exactly - most studios provide a theatrical version of an updated/reworked film if they can, if for no other reason than to get people to buy multiple editions, but then, who cares, if you're able to own a decent quality copy of the version you like?

I'd also like to be on record, in case anyone at fox home entertainment or lucasfilm ltd is reading this - even if you made them $1000 per film I'd happily buy theatrical version blu rays of the original trilogy. And somehow I doubt I'm alone.

I feel we all have pretty valid complaints about what this set will potentially (likely) be.  The blue cast over the films has been there since 1997.  I still have both my original pan-and-scan VHS set, and the widescreen re-release.  The blue colors are there.  So, Lucas has been fine with that look for the last fourteen years (the same age as my car).  However, where my car is a broken down piece of junk that I'm ready to excise from my life, I'm sure Lucas has no aversions to the current look of the original trilogy films.  Yes, further color alterations were made for DVD, but that likely only further re-inforces the issue.  Hell, he personally presented a screening of the 2004 print of "The Empire Strikes Back" in Chicago last year for the 30th anniversary.  We all hope that this will be a proper restoration, giving the films their original brilliance back.  However, LFL has yet to release anything about this set, in either video footage, stills, or tech spec details, to convince us that it will be anything but the same old thing.

Now, I have a 500+ DVD collection.  That includes sets like the Alien Quadrilogy, Blade Runner 4-disc set, the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions, Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition, and two releases of Terminator 2: Judgment Day.  Aside from all of these titles having multiple cuts of each film available (either on the same release, or on a separate release), they are all very comprehensive in their special features.  Commentaries, feature length documentaries, vintage galleries, featurettes, and more.  "Empire of Dreams" was good, but proved a little light with the latter two films (especially ROTJ).  Now, it's not even included here.  There should be dedicated documentaries on both "Empire" & "Jedi."  AOTC & ROTS never got that treatment, either.

I also have "From Star Wars to Jedi" on VHS.  I had purchased the one with the "Faces" cover believing it would be digitally remastered like the 1995 releases, but it was not.  I would indeed love to have that in a restored quality in HD.  That's the only vintage documentary I've ever seen on the saga, and would indeed love to see more.

So, I do agree that the special features here are very underwhelming next to these other sets I mentioned, especially the Blade Runner and Alien sets.  Both of which are as definitive as could possibly be imagined.  You can tell that a huge amount of time, effort, and care went into those releases.  I want to love this Star Wars set, but I'm not convinced of it being worth its price tag.  Especially since I don't personally own an HDTV, Blu Ray player, or a home theatre system that is DTS compatible.  So, they need to do a MASSIVE effort for me to even try to make that kind of upgrade/overhaul.  Granted, Lucas needs all these multiple releases so he can continue to have a hefty income to continue funding his projects, but it's gotten real tired.  After 30 years of constant re-releases and re-packagings with all kinds of digital restoration, manipulation, screw-ups, missteps, and so forth, we deserve something we can call "definitive."  This Blu Ray set, so far, has not earned such a distinction.  Maybe we can be proven wrong come September, but we shouldn't have wait that long to gain confidence in this release.

That's just my opinion.  Agree or disagree as you desire.
