Taking the cliques and moderated discussions out of their self-controlled worlds will expose them to the scrutiny they deserve.

The creepy part is that the revisionism is aimed so squarely at young people who don't know any better, it doesn't seem to matter to LFL that they eventually become old enough to hear something different. Because by then there's a new wave of kids to sell it to, so who cares? Anyway, unless you're a kid, the revisionism doesn't even make sense if you think about it too much (which I sure do: "Why the hell would Han stand that close to Jabba's mouth?" "Why would those pedestrians walk that close to a GIANT DINOSAUR'S ASSHOLE?" etc. etc.)

There's also another problem: SW is the only movie franchise I know of that has an extensive revisionist history that is changed from day to day. We are talking about Soviet Russian levels of revisionism. Do any other movies have censored/revised histories on how they were made? I doubt it. SW is a movie, not a communist dictatorship.

Exactly. Anyone new coming into the franchise, and especially people born after it was created, are only going to believe what they are told, as they have no frame of reference to dispute it. I came into the franchise in 1995. While that meant I could mostly see the revisionist history concerning the prequels and the special editions, I don't think I realized until I came here that, for example, the original Star Wars didn't always say "Episode IV A New Hope." I'd assumed that was always there. My frame of reference was 1995 and the set of interviews that came with the Faces set. So I always just took it as a matter of course what Lucas said in those: that the trilogy was one big movie split into three parts because it was just soooooo damned epic and amazing and long. Since I wasn't there at the time, I had no reason to question it!

Me too. I had been watching SW since I was in diapers, and I had read Skywalking when I was 10, but I think the Faces interviews was the first time I ever saw George Lucas in live video talking about the films.
I remember a few years later, though, thinking, hmm, the synopsis of the early drafts in Skywalking doesn't sound much like the way Lucas describes them. But hey, I'm sure Lucas is right, he wrote the thing after all.
I guess Secret History of Star Wars began the moments I started going beyond the films themselves. :p

The studios used to outright fabricate how certain FX were achieved in the old days. (If they revealed how it was done at all.) Ray Harryhausen recalled an article on King Kong from his youth that said it was a man in a gorilla suit in front of red process screen. Yeah right!
Ironically, Dino DeLaurentis duped the entire motion picture academy into believing every shot in the '76 remake was Carlo Rambaldi's life size mechanical Kong, (which barely worked at all) screwing over Rick Baker's contribution.
In 1977, someone at 20th Century Fox put out publicity crap that Threepio was totally mechanical, much to Anthony Daniels' dismay. (In fact, the studio was a tad paranoid about acknowledging any of the masked performers, let alone putting out any "unmasked" photos.) Boy, did I get into schoolyard debates over that one!

I remember taking my cousin to see the OT triple bill (he had only seen Jedi and wasn't paying much attention first time on account of him being so young and hyperactive).
When Episode IV A New Hope came up he prodded me in the ribs and said he had only seen the third one.
When ESB started with "A long time ago..." he thought they put the fourth one back on again.
His verdict after seeing all three was he liked Jedi the most and Empire the least (because the Falcon kept breaking down).
When I showed them to an Indian friend of mine (who grew up in a small village and had seen hardly any films) he liked them but he didn't know what all the red lines were.
He also thought that Blade Runner was set in contemporary America and was amazed that they had flying police cars in the USA.
Showing him The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a giggle.
