Coooooooooooooooooool. Now we're really getting somewhere. The upload of the raw transfers marks an important day in Original Trilogy history. I'm gonna put on my best chaps and do a celebratory dance. Thanks for sticking with this Zion. Now one of you tech fags do whatever needs to be done to put this on BD before I slap you. I'm so excited, I'm all "Hello Frisco!" I can't believe that this project has risen again like a super fucking sexy Phoenix!

So the upload is the raw capture of the XØ?  Something like 40gb?

Are these cleaned up at all, or completely raw?

What will be done with them (if anything)?

I'm interested in this as well... It'd be nice if someone worked this out into some basic finished project. I'm no good at IVTC'ing and stuff so a finished release would definitely be an interesting project.

Looks like I'm gonna have to renew my newsgroup subscription :)  Thanks, Zion!  I'm really looking forward to taking a crack at these.  Should make for a fantastic break from my other projects :)

It's been many years we've waited just to have a decent transer of the LDs. Forget cleaning them up, it's a pipe dream. One of you homos needs to get your ass in gear and get these raw transfers to BD post haste. Lets keep our eyes on the prize cowboys. If you guys need any help with hair and makeup, interior decorating, or show tunes I'm here. Now we just need to find a willing member with the know how to get these things onto a BD and we'll be in business. I'm so excited right now I feel like Judy Garland when she she woke up in Oz and the whole screen went full color and all that shit. Focus guys, focus. We are nearing the coming of this project.

You're the man. Now I'm warning you, if you succeed in getting these things onto a BD, I'm probably going to fall in love with you. That's cool though because I live in New Hampshire we have gay marraige here...I'm getting WAY ahead of myself right now but you have to admit it sounds pretty sweet. You and I, watching these discs on my big screen TV and sipping white wine. This is all happening so fast.

I always cry at weddings...or do I just fall over legs akimbo with no knickers on?

Anyway looking forward to seeing what rolls out of the hanger bay (it's not as if the Star Wars is officially coming OUT on Blu-ray any day soon is it?).

This is the raw capture, yes. It's the exact same set of files Laserman sent the rest of us after the capture was done. I would assume he IVTC'd them himself before sending to save on disk space, as the frame rate is already 23.976.

If someone wanted to prep this for outputting to DVD or Blu-ray or whatever, I would recommend a quick and dirty avisynth script with at least the following:

  • Combine the 8 files into one
  • Crop and resize to 16x9
  • Adjust video levels (set black and white points)
  • Upscale and sharpen

At this time, I have no plans to do anything other than release the raw captures to Usenet. If you want them uploaded somewhere else, burned to blu-ray, or converted to your favorite video flavor, you're better off asking someone else.

could someone post really detailed pics once they've downloaded it?  preferably from parts that can only be get in gout?

Actually, it was I that IVTC'd them I have the true master files. After IVTC'ing, I broke them up onto DVDs to send to the rest of the X0 group. ;)

Hey, Zion...did you send my LD yet?

I haven't been on the X0 board in awhile, but I remember telling him about the missing disc, and he said he'd look for it. I believe it was around that time he dropped a hard drive and hoped that wasn't the one that had the files.

I was wondering...when his wife emailed us, did she do it with his email, or her own email. Maybe we could contact her and find out what happened to him. I'm leaning towards assuming the worse, since he never responded himself, but you never know.

As for the LD, see if the LD will fit in one of those new "If it fits, it ships" boxes, and just fill it with packing peanuts.

^ Bad taste, Molly.

Many thanks Zion, uploading files of this magnitude is not a trivial undertaking.

Anyway - I've had a look at the first 1GB of file 1 (about 15 minutes). First thoughts: this is not the panacea we've all been waiting for.

Yes it is a beautiful laserdisc capture. If you have any experience with LD captures, you can appreciate the remarkably stable and noise-free image here. You can actually feel the build quality of the X0 player just by watching this play.

OK so the black level is too high, but that's easily fixable. In fact, the banding I see in AviSynth's histogram("classic") view suggests to me that the raw files have already had some form of levels adjustment. MeBeJedi, did you do anything else with these files apart from the IVTC?

But at the end of the day this is still only a LD capture. The amount of dot crawl present is disappointing - I remember Laserman posted a comparison with a D925 capture showing pristine edges to red areas, which I thought was down to the 3D comb filter on the PDI Deluxe card. Sadly this transfer does not appear to have been captured using the same high-quality comb filter.

The aliasing and DVNR are still present of course. There are also very occasional line drops or video dropouts, again fairly easily to fix but demonstrate that this is only a LD cap.

Well, the aliasing and DVNR are inherent to the laserdisc master so it will always be there no matter what. I honestly can't imagine any laserdisc capture being better than the GOUT, based on the fact that the GOUT is encoded from the same master as the LDs, so it's the same (2nd) generation copy of the master as the LDs but made using newer technology. Any LD capture will be a 3rd generation copy. But I'd be happy to be proved wrong on that.

No, it's NTSC, I believe from the 1993 Definitive Collection discs. The French "Coffret"was the equivalent in PAL, but the aliasing and DVNR are present to some extent on both these THX-certified releases.

Couldn't it make quite a difference being that it will be 16X9? The GOUT is letterboxed and unless you want to watch it fully framed with a foot of black on all sides, you have to use the wide zoom setting on the tv which makes it look extremely fuzzy. I'm hoping that letterboxed vs 16x9 will make a big difference, but maybe I'm just being queer about it. I better not be too queer though, it seems that Molly is a homophobe. That usually means that someone is gay themselves, or at least does quite a bit of scissoring.
