I guess it was my computer after all. I played it on my regular speakers and it sounded just fine. For some reason, the DVD-9 version dramatically drops in volume in those 2 moments when played on my comp.
Sorry for the mixup.

So I finally got to watch the DVD-9 version. I don't know if it was just my computer or what... but I noticed several changes to the audio that I didn't expect. Can anyone tell me if those were intentional?
I noticed it twice. In both instances, the dramatic music seems to have decreased in volume, and it's almost difficult to hear. I played the SL DVD afterward to make sure it wasn't my imagination, and there's definitely a difference.
1. When Vader throws Capt. Antilles after choking him.
2. When the door to Leia's cell closes after she sees the mind probe.
So you're saying that it sounds fine on the SL DVD yet there is a problem on the DVD-9?

I recently got a copy of ANH:R from a friend; however it does not contain two special features that are listed on all versions of the artwork: the multi-angle scene breakdown and the isolated score track (at least, these don't appear in the disc's main menu).
I take it that the version I have is not the DVD-9 version? This is fine with me, although I'd love to eventually acquire that version, also. For now, can someone please direct me to some artwork for the version I have? I don't want my DVD case to list features that aren't on my disc. Thanks.
If you're hoping to get hold of the DVD-9 anyway, then why not just use the current artwork until you have it? I don't think there's a DVD-5 specific cover. I could be wrong though.
Don't know if any of these will work:

Also, the dvd-9 is on fanedit.info.
By the way, Ady... the reason I got the DVD-9 was to watch the movie with a friend who has never seen it. Not surprisingly, she said she would probably never watch the non-Revisited version again. Just thought I'd let you know :)
Oh, and she said her favorite change was the coloring of all the lasers (ship and gun). My favorite change is "They'll be no escape this time."
One thing that we were curious about though... how come you changed the targeting display in the X-wings but not the tie fighters? It looks like the Rebel's targeting display is decades ahead of the Empire's because the latter is so outdated and pixelated. Same with the monitors in the death star control room versus the monitors on Yavin. The Rebel Alliance looks like they got all the state-of-the-art tech. :P
You know, that hit me when I watched it again this weekend. Perhaps something to be addressed for ARSE.What Plans? said:

Actually i hardly touched the X-wing displays apart from giving them the correct TIE fighter graphic. They look virtually the same apart from that. I didn't touch the TIE displays because we see the same displays in the jedi starfighter in ROTS. And i also only changed the briefing room display and added the holographic table for the rebels, but left all the others alone and i did enhance the death star control room displays slightly but gave the death star countdown a whole new updated display.
Good to know that somebody at ILM actually paid attention to the original films.adywan said:

I guess you're just a lot better than you think, because those X-wing displays look so clean and crisp! No pixelation whatsoever. Whereas the TIE display is made of really blocky red squares.
And by the control room, I meant the room overlooking the Falcon where the droids hide. Those monitors look awful. Especally the one with the cicular "scan-like" motion. Even in the original films, it was painful to watch. But then again, I was born more than 10 years after SW came out, so I'm sure it has sentimental value to those who grew up with it.

Today's "Make Frink Feel Old" Post brought to you by What Plans?
I've wondered myself about the displays and consoles and such in Star Wars. Sure, something like the Falcon could look more like a conventional aircraft with swithes and knobs and such, but the DS instrumentation doesn't look much more advanced. Maybe they purposefully didn't go the slick, still-awesome-looking-today 2001 route.
Well, it's not that the graphics are "bad" but they just don't look like they have a purpose. It almost looks like a cheap movie set that needed to have a lot of blinking lights and moving displays. I think that the monitors would have looked better even if they only had a static image on them.
I just made this little mockup in Photoshop. It looks terrible cuz it only took like 5 minutes but it gives you an idea of what I think would make a good display: the falcon outline. I added the red bar as kind of a scan bar. But even if it was a static image, it would make sense that the empire would scan the vessel upon entry into the DS.
The circle monitor and the monitor which just types up numbers seem kind of useless.

I have no problem imagining it could be some sort of constant scan of the death star itself, just the way it is.
I've never understood how Obi-wan could make heads or tails of the map to the tractor beam control. And I still don't like 3PO's recorded dialog about the power loss at one of the terminals blah blah. Still doesnt sound right mix-wise, and it still surprises me because it's new (to me).

I grew up hearing that line all the time, but I can't remember where. May have had to do with the version that the local TV stations played. I was more surprised the first time I didn't hear it.

Same here. I do agree that the mix sounds different than the rest of the dialog, but I think it's ok. Guess maybe because I'm used to it.
I've never questioned it. Have never realised it wasn't in there originally when watching.
The CED I grew up with and the THX tapes didn't have it, then they started using it in the SE. I can see why it was added to whatever mix, its just not mixed that well...

It's in the 1985 audio mix, so most stereo home video releases between 1985 and 1993 had the tractor beam line intact.
I also think it's mixed better in the mono mix than the 1985 stereo or SE mixes, but I'm not sure about this.
So which version has 3PO's dialog and which does not? Growing up I mostly watched the version in the original vhs box set:
Did this have it? If not I'm unsure why it's so familiar to me. And if it does have it, what version did all of you who aren't familiar with it watch?
Before I got the set I used to rent an older copy that had different cover art. Maybe that's it?
EDIT: thanks Ash!

Umm... So the old displays "seem to have no purpose" but this distraction does? Nah. The displays are fine. So you don't know what their function is. So what?
Actually, ray_afraid, it wasn't Jaitea that said they have no purpose. It was the guy above him.
