Interesting, I've just looked up "DC restoration". Sounds like it describes the same effect that caused the streaking on Zion's early D704 captures.

Official Trailer shows evidence of the same flaws as the 2004 edition... color me (pun intended) unimpressed.

Place your bets now on how many times the discs will be re-released!

We must remember the 1997 footage on the 1st 2004 DVD's trailer.

But yes, I find it unlikely that they will fix any colour issue. I shall wait for more info about it before I buy anything.

Actually, I don't remember this. Got a link handy?

(All I recall are a few news programs covering the new release and using old footage (ie: the '97 jabba) probably since they didn't obtain any of the new footage in time... but not official ads.)

Sure, perhaps they're just being lazy in the ads, but until I learn otherwise (from reputable sources, at least), I'm assuming these are the same blue tinted editions (at least where the "Original Trilogy" is concerned) that we got in 2004, albeit in "HD" resolution. I've seen the now infamous "is it new or is it old" ROTJ saber scene a couple of times now, so I don't feel any desire to pay money to watch it one more time in higher quality.

Agreed, I'm with you. "As advertised." When the 2006 editions were coming out, people hoped against hope that the included '04's would have some fixes. Didn't happen (as if there was any reason to hope that such a thing would happen).

I'm not buying it, even if I did have have a blu-ray player and HD TV right now to play it on, I wouldn't buy it. Not because "Lucas sucks" but because I don't want to support another shoddy edition. Certain forums are full of people of course who will say I'm lying and that I'll buy them anyway (because fanboys have no self control and secretly love being scammed), but those people can go kiss a wookiee. ;)

PS: Can anybody tell I'm annoyed by this? Here's how he can un-annoy me... release a properly restored high def edition of the original trilogy and by that I mean an up-to-standard BD featuring the three films as close to their '77-'85 theatrical presentations as possible on the format. Regular release, not some "limited time only" overpriced exclusive deal-o where you have to buy all 6 episodes in a go (I realize he's doing this as all OR each trilogy for no discount, but still). Want to make me really happy? Throw in some vintage extras and properly restored deleted scenes from the 70's and 80's. That's all any of us really want that we're not getting...

PPS: And I don't buy the "well buy this now and that will encourage him to re-release it again," potential argument, because we know all he'll do is change the packaging in future re-releases, not the content. He got a good four years out of the 2004 editions on the format. The only reason he's putting these out now is to get people thinking about Star Wars again to hype the 3D releases. When was Lucas going to start making those "small films that nobody cares about but me" again?

Just to reiterate, the official Star Wars blu-ray trailer out now uses straight 2004 DVD footage of the OT. The saber clash in front of the emperor is the ugly solid color bars, and the rest of the shots are blue tinted. There isn't a hint anywhere that any of the OT footage was touched for this release.

"Disappointing" is hardly the word I would use.

I must echo Kurgan's thoughts on the matter.

Throw in theatrical cuts of the prequels and I'll buy those on blu-ray as well.

That DVD trailer has clearly got the pre-screw up ROTJ saber cross so maybe the blu-ray trailer is following in it's footsteps.

It's going to be a long time before I'd be in a position to want to get the official HD versions anyway so by the time I think I might want them I'll already know if they are the same screwy mess therefore not required or possibly required.

You know, if these came out with the 2004SE colours but fixed the lightsabers, then I would consider buying them. But if they come out with the same damn problem with vader wielding a damn pink lightsaber! then I'm out.

The thing that interests me most though if I'm honest, is the sound mix for each film in lossless audio and the potential benefits of using the blu-rays to further enhance fanedits.

Hmm, I actually may have said this already earlier in the thread.. Ah well, wouldn't surprise me....lol :S

This is what i would want.

The Star Wars Trilogy, the real versions from 1977-1983, as well as as the 20th anniversary special editions from 1997. On top of that a fixed release of the 2004 with the colors fixed, the audio mistakes corrected, and garbage mattes and effects glitches caused by the Lowry restoration to be corrected and repaired.

All scanned from the original negatives or best available sources at 8K resolution.

Lucas is a billionaire and fox has deep pockets, they can afford to restore these films. The upcoming blu ray set with no restoration, no fixed colors and only scanned at 1080P is an outrage.

+1 on the "real versions" and "20th anniversary special editions"

With regards to George and his money, remember he needs it all to fund the research for his own Darth Vader suite so that he can cheat death when the time comes and continue to enforce the evil he had been spreading since 1999! Or he needs it to build his time machine so he can go back to 1977 and have the films released "As they were always meant to be"

Honestly, I could live without the '97 SE. Would be nice to have, but it's lack of inclusion wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

I'd be perfectly happy with just a proper restoration of the '77-'83 originals.

A Short Script about the lack of OOT in the upcoming blu-ray sets that I call, "Return of Jabba's Trap".

STARRING Justin Timberlake as Luke, George Lucas as Jabba the Hutt

LUKE TIMBERLAKE: (breaks the 4th wall and addresses YOU)

Hi. I'm Luke Skywalker! I'm here to rescue you....and the OOT, and yes I am a little short for a storm trooper."

(pause for viewer interaction)

VIEWER: Uhhhh? Ok.

JABBA THE LUCAS: "Ohhhohohohoho! Ahhhhahahahaha! (Clicks on popular websites tracking the pre-sale) I see the new blu-ray box sets are being pre-ordered in record numbers. If you surrender now and buy them, I will show some mercy to you by feeding you to the Rancor instead of the mighty Sarlac! (Salacious B. Crumb laughs)

LUKE TIMBERLAKE: "I'll never surrender to you Jabba. You can attempt to kill me, but if you were successful, which you won't be, I would grow more powerful than you could ever imagine. Furthermore, I will never buy anymore Star Wars merchandise unless you release the OOT from the carbonite at once!...oh yeah and release General Solo as well.

C-3P0: Sir, you're standing over...

JABBA THE LUCAS: AHAHAHA! (opens trap door, Luke falls in)...I can make any changes to the movies I want...no more bone to battle the rancor, and no more switch you can throw a rock at! Die Jedi!

(Rancor eats Luke, crunch crunch crunch,  Jabba the Lucas laughs, Jar Jar walks into the scene wearing a vintage OOT-era Star Wars shirt to add insult to injury..."Meesa shirt is kewl, right!?" *winks, then high fives the Rancor and leaves unharmed* )

SPIRIT OF LUKE TIMBERLAKE: I still have won Jabba...I will never buy your merchandise again until you release the OOT from the carbonite...at that point, it's a rescue mission fulfilled.

THE END

While Modern fans are at the height of excitement over the blu ray release, my fan interest in star wars is at its lowest ebb in my history with star wars as a avid fan.

TFN fans will be ecstatic at the messed up colors and crushed blacks and poor audio mixes.  They will love the fact that these were not even scanned at 2003-4 HD ceiling on resolution, no indeed only 1080P when they were doing 2-4k scans back then.  And now they do 6-8 k and up, with much better tech advanced in seven years.

The 2004 master is at an obsolete resolution, and not even up to release print 35mm quality.

Its an outrage.

Lucas its good enough and cheap enough approach it will get passing grades and high marks despite not being a demonstration quality blu ray release, and it won';t look film-like.

Really a joke when you consider they spent a record amount of money in 1994-1997 to restore the original elements to make the special edition, which Lucas did not pay for Fox did.

Yes... I also feel almost nothing for the franchise now. Only moderate quality version of the originals and memories of the movies and toys from the early 1980s holds any interest for me.

Sad really, to think it has come to this.

Sadly we will never get a moderate quality version of the originals, just sub-sub-substandard ports.

There is no justice any more when it comes to SW.

Every Wednesday at my local Showtime Video they have rental for just one dollar. I will rent them on that day just so I can see what the bonus features are like.

It's not that newer fans like that stuff, it's just that they don't care.

I really do wonder if FOX would've released nice restored versions of the OOT if they still owned the rights to the franchise...

It is more likely that Cuba or North Korea will become free democracies in the next 50 years than the OOT will get even a DVD quality release. It's sad the DVD format had to just start when GL released the SEs. Otherwise we would have good quality DVDs instead of the Jim Crow nightmare we are in now.

Completely stupid if you ask me. Idiotic even. There use to be a time when renting a DVD was a dream. Now, we have to buy the DVD for the extras alone. Where's the fun of renting a DVD without extras. Granted, people buy a DVD to watch the movie, OK. But there's no fun when the rental version has no extras!

Author

I don't know. I stopped watching DVD extras years ago, and I see why the studios would be doing it. But I agree that if you're interested in that stuff you should be able to watch it on a rental.

It has always been like that here in the Czech Republic, most releases had a retail version and a rental version. And even on VHS, when there was the trilogy set, there was a rental version and you could only rent each film separately. I fully expect these Blu-Rays to be the same for rental- each film separately and without the bonus discs.

Many of the more recent ones I've rented have not had them at all.  Toy Story 3 is one I specifically remember - I was furious because I couldn't watch "Night & Day" (the short that screened before the movie in theaters) without buying the movie.

I can understand why you'd be upset, but I can see the studio's side too.  It is in their interest to give us a reason to buy.
