I actually feel a little bad for my comments in this thread, I'm actually happy that you finally working on a way of sharing the work that went in to this project, Zion.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Same here. Although there was a time when I was completely taken in by this project...which is why I became so disappointed by its cancellation.

Sad thinking about Laserman though, puts everything we do here into proper perspective...

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

If the damn drugs don't kill me, they give me a 50% chance of still being here after 5 years, (actually it is either a 75% or 25% chance depending on the subtype, but the test to find out costs around $8,000 and won't change the outcome anyway, so I'll take the average 50% stat) - so with any luck I'll be still around when the BluRay/HD-DVD/3D version of the trilogy comes out

It is poignant that Laserman posted this in 2005, ie 5 years and 3 months ago.

We spoke via email a few times, and I had a huge respect for the guy. He will always be remembered here as the person who came up with the "GOUT" acronym.

To me that "Look sir, droids" shot just looks like it could be color corrected 2004 DVD footage.

That's what I thought too and the fact that it is cut off on both ends at exactly the time which would reveal it as an SE shot (just after the digital Dewback would be out of the frame at the beginning and just before the wipe to the new SE sandcrawler at the end) only supports that theory.

I need to look up the actual conversation on our private board where Laserman posted about that shot, but I'm pretty sure one of the sources is the 2004 DVD. That's why it's cut off at the beginning and doesn't show the dewback. Keep in mind that this was the first shot he ever completed with the Black Magic workstation and that it was never meant to be released or actually used in the X0 project (obviously, since it isn't the full shot). I assume a few of you are paranoid or whatever, but you need to believe me when I say that I'm giving you exactly what Laserman presented to the rest of us way back when. If he says this was a direct output from Black Magic, then that's exactly what it is.

I really hope I can find that other shot.

Zion can you please just release the X0 captures? Why won't you do this?

Vbangle, I think Zion said he would release them

And Zion, I'm sorry, I wasn't saying you're lying or anything, I was just really excited about these clips being released and when that clip didn't turn out to be what I expected, I was just a bit disappointed.

Did newsgroups ever see the raw capture?

thanks for sharing as much as you have Zion. Shame more couldn't be done but so much has changed with technology and computer effects and other people like Adywan doing amazing stuff that I'm sure someone else will be able to improve the films more, especially if they have the X0 captures.

Who knows, maybe someday the technology used by Black Magic will become commonplace and cheap enough to be sold as a consumer product. In 1993 when Robert A Harris restored My Fair Lady, they mentioned in the documentary that they spent a very significant amount of money to use a highly advanced computer technology to digitally erase a fairly large scratch from the title screen. Such a process can now be easily done in photoshop, and sometimes even look respectable with MS paint.

Zion, if I may ask, is your avatar a picture of you? I've just always wondered that.

Wait so did it get released on the newsgroups?

No. I wouldn't count on it either.

Are you just talking about the sharing of ideas and clips through discussion?

Sorry, bkev. I just noticed you asked the same thing earlier. I was just curious if any new information had arisen due to Knightmessenger's post.

*Spits out tea* Wait, what timecode leaked version? Is that a joke? Sorry, I'm relatively new here (registered in November) and not up to speed on random leaked versions. Well... why not just post this on the newsgroups? Can I have a copy?

Misinformed Bkev, was Misinformed. Zion has recently hinted at a willingness to release the raw captures, but never a promise.

I was aware of Zion announcing that he may release a raw capture, which I am anxiously awaiting; however, from skyjedi's post, it seems that there was another version, which he says was "leaked." Does anyone have this "leaked" version or am I misunderstanding skyjedi?

It was never meant to be released and was not cleaned up at all, not even sure it was the X-0 version.

It was for internal X-0 staff use and i don't have it.

Aw shucks, you got my hopes up skyjedi. ;-) Does anyone have this special version, who'd be willing to release it to the community?

It was given out a number of years ago to a select few who probably aren't around here anymore. I've seen one or two screenies of it.

It was a timecoded copy, simply meant so all the members could tell each other exactly what they were working on down to each frame.  It was just a reference, it wasn't the actual video they were working with.  I believe it was made from the video they were working with, but it was much lower quality since it was just meant to be a timecode copy.

Ahh... gotcha. How much lower is it? Despite its lower quality, would it still have been better than most laserdisc preservations or the GOUT?
