Question About The History of Originaltrilogy.com? — Page 2

I always figured that other than trying to actually get the star wars trilogy released on DVD this site existed to try and fight the good fight.  Which is ultimately futile in trying to stop Lucas from destroying star wars, and erasing our cultural film history by burying the oot.

What we got were worthless drink coasters in 2004, and in 2006 just slightly better than bootleg quality non anamorphic laserdisc video masters ported to DVD.  So we have the gout in unwacthable quality, and the 2004 in good video quality but with bad cgi and messed up sound and colors.

Thanks to Lucas i have a nice set of 9 drink coasters that are DVD's.

It is said that this site was founded in late 2003 right? Around November 2003?

The site went live in March 2003.

Was this site founded on the knowledge the originals would not be included on the 2004 DVDs or was it founded for other reasons?

The aim of the petition was always to get the original theatrical cuts on DVD - it was originally hosted on PetitionOnline, then later moved onto the site

On February 10th 2004, Lucasfilm officially announced that the DVDs due in September that year would contain the Special Edition versions (little did we know that there were to be further changes). The petition received thousands of additional signatures after this announcement.

I remember that site - somehow I never connected it to this one until now.

As I recall, the site was to get the OT on DVD (since DVD had been well established for some time and no announcement had been made for Star Wars) and there was little emphasis for the "Theatrical" versions because few of us were aware that such an emphasis was required.  I think we all assumed that any DVDs would contain the original versions, and that the inclusion of a Special Edition or Special'r edition would be a bonus.

Oh, to be that young again.  :(

The announcement in 2004, at first, seemed to be a victory until we started realizing that we wouldn't get the O-OT.  If the purpose of the site previously was to get SW on DVD (and possibly to hook the people up with laserdisc rips), the purpose of the site then became to get the O-OT on DVD.

A lot of people cited this as proof of "they'll never be happy with anything- they've been crying about the OT on DVD, not they're crying about the O-OT on DVD, and in 2006 they'll cry about the O-OT on DVD not being anamorphic, etc..."  But I think it was more of a misplaced trust that a lot of us had that we didn't need to overspecify what we wanted.  When we said we wanted the OT on DVD, we clearly meant a "watchable quality" version of the O-OT.

I think we should make the most specific description possible and base the petition on that.

New transfer, correct colors, all sound mixes, deleted scenes...

I first became aware of this site back in '03, not too long after it began. I signed the petition enthusiastically, and started haranguing my friends, family members, and anyone else that would listen, to go to originaltrilogy.com and do likewise. Anyone remember the old link banner images that had a picture of Han and, IIRC, said something about Han shooting first? I used a modified version of that as my avatar on the other online forums I was a part of at the time. For some reason or another (probably time constraints), I never got very active in the OT.com forum back then. I lurked quite a bit and actually had an account, but only posted a couple times. I think my old account must have been pruned at some point due to inactivity.

Anyway, after a loooong period of absence (which no one would've noticed, given my serial-lurker-status in the first place), I returned in the wake of Ady's completed ANH:R. At that point I tried to revive my old account, but due to its apparent pruning, started a new account instead.

I realize that none of this is actually relevant or interesting, but since everyone else is sharing their experiences with this site's history, I figured I'd do the same. Also, I too affirm that Frink's postcount is truly a thing to behold.

And just think, a good 5% of my posts contain actual content.

(this one goes with the other 95%, obviously)

To my knowledge Frink has never used his postcount to rank pull during an altercation.

In the early days of myself actually posting here I witnessed that sort of thing quite a few times.

Nor to pull rank ;-)

Post count alone should never be a measure of rank or respect or whathaveyou, IMO.

Hear, hear. Ditto for length of membership. As I've said elsewhere, it's actual behavior that's important on the internet. Not postcount, RL circumstances, having "quite an online presence," etc.

One exception: If you half-complete several projects before deleting them all, and delete your own account, then come back under a new account and just beg for it to be deleted too, and all the hate against you is members-club driven...

Is the whole of the old petition still available anywhere?

The earliest version of this site that shows up on archive.org is from March 2003, and basically all it is is a picture that says "Han shot first!" and a coming soon banner.

I found this site in early 2005 (I think Gaffer and I registered in the same month, now that I think about it) looking for the MagnoliaFan edits. And once I got here I took my first step into a larger world, so to speak. :P

That certainly contradicts my memory of the focus of the site, originally.  Am I remembering something else/something older... or does the memory just cheat like the devil?

Maybe we need a petition to get the O-OT.com back.  ;)

I'd just like to say hello to everyone as I've been a lurker for about 12 months now and I can't remember how I found this website.

A good friend lent me a copy of SW-R and I've been reading ever since.

After reading Ady's recent problems I thought I would register as I'd like to join some of the debates on here.  Good forum you guys have here! :)

Don't know what internet you are using, but the link gives me this:

To:  George Lucas

Few science fiction films have achieved the success and notoriety of the original Star Wars trilogy. Loved and cherished by millions of devoted fans, Star Wars encompasses a universe full of heroes and villains that continues to endure in popular culture.

Currently, you have no plans to release the original theatrical cuts of Episodes IV, V, and VI on DVD. To be replaced by completed versions of your Special Editions released in 1997, these classic pieces of science fiction and film history should not be allowed to fade away into obscurity. Without getting into the debate over whether these updates to the original trilogy are good or bad, it seems a shame that the fans, who have collectively spent hundreds of millions of dollars over the last 25 years purchasing Star Wars movie tickets, video cassettes, laserdiscs, action figures, and various other memorabilia, will not be able to own DVD-quality versions of the original Oscar-winning films that captivated them so fully for so many years.

We, the undersigned, urge you to reconsider your position on the matter and release the theatrical cuts of the original trilogy on DVD--and someday, HD-DVD--untouched and unaltered. We fully appreciate your desire to improve upon your original work; all we ask is the option to enjoy the brilliance of the original trilogy as it was when we first came to know it.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
