If anything, if the 2011 set bombs financially, it will be incentive that the only way to make money off of SW is to release the originals.

More people are protesting these than the 2004 set, but it really doesn't matter. The Lucas faithful will buy them up just for the fact that they say Star Wars on them.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I guess it's encouraging that he's got a little marketing-speak name for it at least ("classic versions"). All the more important stuff that gets manufactured, like the toys, video games and the Sebulba jockstrap, starts out that way.

Agreed.  The comments at Blu-ray.com reflect a good cross section of the people wanting and/or buying these.  The most comments in any of their news announcements, I might add.

Star Wars Lemmings.  Keep spending.  Keep walking.  Don't look down.

Not likely. Preorders are already number one on Amazon and probably though the roof. It's over guys. We're done.

They are the original, now classic films, as released starting in 1977.  They have incredible technological relevance, especially in terms of their use (also with CE3K) of the Dolby process, and Dolby's pioneering CP50 and SVA printed optical soundtracks on 35mm film.

But, for me, beyond the changes in effects and storyline, the veritable 800 pound gorilla is what the films and their filmmakers proved, especially in that 1977 original.  And that was that a filmmaker with a certain brilliance toward technology, production techniques, and story could work in a pre-digital world, and on an extremely limited budget, noted on iMDB as only thirteen million dollars, and create an extraordinary masterwork using every trick in the book, and some new ones, to create one of the most beloved and highly regarded films ever to hit the silver sheet.  It is precisely those occasional garbage mattes, layer upon layer of composited effects, beautifully manufactured sound, and yes, what appear to be occasional cardboard cut-outs, that prove how, within that limited budget, an extraordinary film could be created, by a master filmmaker.

In that sense, when those in this thread communicate on line regarding their feelings toward Mr. Lucas, please keep in mind, that behind the corporate structure is the extraordinary technical showman who created what this discussion is about in the first place.  My personal respect for him, and his work goes all the way back to those budget-saving measures used in creating that original masterpiece.  It is for that reason, that I believe the original films should be available on Blu-ray in their highest possible visual and aural states -- to show those who never had the opportunity to see these films in their original 70mm blow-ups, what real filmmaking on an epic level is all about.  It is for that reason, that I believe a nine film set is in order.

As to what is being posted, I would suggest that personal gibes be restrained, and that if there is a desire to communicate one's feelings, that it be done in a respectful manner.

I'm glad someone agrees with me. Getting to OOT back is like putting toothpaste back in the tube. It's thermodynamically impossible.

The physical ability to do it isn't the problem. As Robert Harris said, the films are pretty well protected in that there are sep masters for at least two and probably all three. The problem is that no one can get at them right now due to certain business conditions, the main one being that George Lucas has the legal right to block people from getting at them. This may or may not change in the near future but it will change in the distant future, and because of that it might come out in between those extremes (i.e. in 15-20 years, after Lucas dies, but maybe even less). The situation is bad but not hopeless.

But it's still a paradigm shift; the OOT has been supplanted by the PTSE for the last fourteen years, and there is no chance that the PTSE is going to be phased out and the OOT put back on its rightful place. The OOT may be preserved, like you say, but time is not go to go in reverse and redeem the franchise.

Could someone explain to me which law of thermodynamics this is?

I would assume it must be Thermodynamic Order 66:  Toothpase is immutable outside of its natural habitat.

Or something like that.  How the hell should I know?  I studied Theatre!

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

You are right of course.  When the guy who is the emperor and has the keys to the kingdom has lost his marbles and thinks his new clothes look so good because his lackeys and yes men say they look so great, lol.

Frink, everyone knows you went to clown college.

As far as the paradigm shift goes, I agree it is irreversible.  However, I am not the same person I was when I was a younger fan.  I don’t have the anger that the SE’s and prequels have redefined what I grew up with.  Sadness, maybe.  I just want a good (HD) release of the OOT and I can happily let the rest of the SW fandom have their inferior Official Original Vision of George.

I wish I could dispute this.

*sad clown*

However, it did land me a regular job, which pays me enough to be able to afford the blu-ray set when it comes out.*

I'm still torn whether I will get them or not.  I know I would only watch the bonus features.  Maybe I could find a used set.

Or rental.

I will get them from a library or something.

Lucash is not getting a dime from me.

Re Post 1782:

I'd heard the name Robert Harris before, but I didn't really know much about the person. Those few paragraphs from the guy have earned him a hell of a lot of respect from me.

I've got family and friends who are foaming at their mouths for this set, so I will eventually see what I am missing.
