Hey dark_jedi. I'm a little late to the party, I guess, but I just found out about this set the other day.

Anyway, I've got a friend who's never seen Star Wars before, and I don't want her first exposure to be the SE DVDs...but the shakeyness on the GOUTs bugs the crap out of me, so I'm thinking you and G-Force's efforts are the way to go.

I'm too impatient to wait for your V3 though. I found what I'm assuming is an older version online, but it doesn't say which version it is, and I skimmed through this thread for a while but I can't find any info on what's new in V3 aside from a few extra audio tracks. Actually, I can't find much info on what you did to this set at all.

But I did watch EpIV for a few minutes and it's quite jarring to not have it shaking all over the place. It's incredibly satisfying.

hi dark_jedi, I've been following this thread for a while, huge thanks for all the work you're putting into this release.

I know this has been asked before but I couldn't find an answer. Have you thought of making a x264 version for us heretics who prefer a MKV file to a DVD with menus? Sure it's easy to remux, and I'm planning to do so anyway to replace some of the audio options with lossless versions. But it would be better if it came straight from you; x264 should result in transparent quality at a reasonable bitrate, around 4000kbps from my own otherwise unsuccessful attempts at running g-force's scripts. Text subs would be a plus, SSA could be used to recreate the original subs while still allowing customization.

I was reading the thread about the image stabilization, and my head is now spinning!  Dark Jedi, you and your peers here are absolutely incredible and I am on pins and needles waiting for this!  The "bouncing around" has always driven me nuts and I look forward to popping these in.

Just so I'm clear and I didn't miss anything (43 pages!), these are going to be available as DL NTSC DVD as well as AVCHD?  Or, did I miss something?

I don't recall d_j saying anything about AVCHD.  Furthermore, since the GOUT is being used as the source, there wouldn't be any point.

Asaki:

DJ's GOUT V1 and V2 are almost the same - the only difference is the V2 moves the (yellow) subtitles from inside the letterboxing (as it is in the V1) to inside the frame itself (V2).  Also, the slow-motion scene in Empire (magic tree) required different settings for stabilization, which weren't applied to the V1, but were applied to the V2.

However, the V1/V2 used the same settings for everything else - which tended to scrub out too much grain and resulted in a loss of some fine detail.  As a result, it appears to be cleaner, but when you compare it to the GOUT, you can really see how much detail has been lost.  Edge enhancement is also an issue.

The V3 is an attempt to rectify these issues - stabilizing the image and cleaning it up without losing a lot of detail.  All the samples I've seen from the V3 script look substantially better than the V1/V2.

It will also feature recreated theatrical (white!) subtitles, and all the available audio mixes for all three films.

ikjacc:

I doubt that DJ will be making an h.264 MKV version available.  That's what I'll be doing for my own personal collection, but I doubt DJ will be doing it himself.

Also, even if he did, I'd prefer the alien subs to be burned-in the same way they will be on the DVD, as even SSA subs won't look right when viewed on my Seagate FreeAgent Theater+, and I'm really looking forward to having the proper, theatrical-accurate subtitles for the first time.

Kenobius Prime:

In the first few pages, AVCHD was indeed discussed.  But the idea was dropped very quickly, for the same reason Frink said.

Wow, I had no idea that the subtitles used to be white.  I am SO looking forward to this!

Hmm...I didn't really think the GOUT needed any grain cleaned up, but maybe that's just me...

Just a little FYI for those looking to snow D_J in with DVD9s.

SuperMediaStore is having a 72 hour sale.  30 pack for $36.99 and free shipping.

Also if you spend $100 on the order you'll get another $10 off with the coupon: Holiday10

Hope that wasn't too off topic for you all.  If it's a problem, let me know and I'll remove this post.

I really don't understand why this wont be released in MKV. It would take almost no effort to make the encode from the source material.

That would be far superior to recoding from the down sampled audio and video of the DVD9.

dark_jedi has covered this before, but I am going to chip in and say this:

If .mkv will "take almost no effort" to do like you say, then it shouldn't be a problem doing it yourself from the finished material, once dark_jedi has finished.

Right now, he is trying to just get it 'done' and he has other worries like the recent GOUT problem he discovered in the other thread.
