Damn, and I was already saddened over Leslie Nielsen's passing. :(

Where were you in '77?

RIP Irvin Kershner. Thank you for the amazing job you did on Empire!

George Lucas was seduced by the dark side. The OOT ceased to exist in his mind and became the Special Editions...." "They're more maching now than movies. Twisted and evil."

RIP, and thanks for the greatest movie of all time.

Sad news.  I've been watching ESB over and over again the last few weeks, thanks to these forums.

The freakiest part (for me) was that I had just pulled a picture of him out of my photo album yesterday.  It's possible that in 1987 when I took it I had no idea who he was.

I know he was Harrison Ford's favorite SW director.

RIP. :(

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Very sad news, damn!

RIP :(

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

You and me both, buddy. I sudder to think how the rule of three will come into play.

To think I watched some of the bad version of ESB last night too on TV. To think we'd lose him during the 30th as well. He's one with the Force now. Rest in peace to the best director a boy, a girl and a galaxy ever had. Even Lucas couldn't ruin that film (at least too much).

:(

It's a sad day for fandom.  I actually teared up a little.

"George, we hate you for making more Star Wars movies.  Please make more Star Wars movies."

I always wondered, was that him doing the "Who are you?" Stormtrooper line?

I wish I had a Kryptonite cross, because then you could keep both Dracula AND Superman away.

Sad news indeed. This just killed my day. What an underappreciated artist he was. I was actually in the middle of putting together a book about him which I had been researching the last two years, but it kind of centred around doing new interviews with him. His health was so poor the last 9 months that I never got the chance to meet him. I wish I had tried to do this a couple years earlier.

RIP Kersh.

Sad news, didn't expect this. Greatest man to ever touch Star Wars.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I always remember how much FUN he sounded like he was having doing commentary for the ESB DVD.

He sounds like that whenever he speaks. He had such passion and energy for life. I knew he had been seriously sick for a year or so now and was basically unable to give interviews, and I know he was getting close to 90, but you know I guess part of me sort of expected that he would pull through because he seems like one of the most indefatiguable people I've ever seen. I guess it was just his time.

Really haunting, since Spike was doing an OT marathon just yesterday by pure coincidence.

Ugh, this is so sad, my jaw literally dropped.  May he RIP, always be remembered, and may his friends and family find comfort in knowing their loved one left behind a magnificent legacy and a very fulfilled life.  The Force was with him!!

I heard this morning and somehow didn't remember to head over here until just now.

Damn, did this news hit me hard.

I've also got somewhat of a "just yesterday" story. Last night I got in a traffic jam driving up I-95, turned on the radio to find out what was up and heard Leslie Nielsen had died. I had listened to the first several minutes of the slashfilmcast episode where massawyrm from aintitcool mentions recently seeing an original 1980 print of Empire. I had nothing but time to kill, so I decided to listen to the rest. Later on in the episode they bring up the news of the 3D conversions and Massawyrm said how the original version of Empire, with all of its mistakes, was still so awesome to watch.

I got about ten minutes into the commentary for Star Wars before Lucas said something ridiculously untrue and I stopped.  It never occurred to me to listen to the other commentary tracks.  Now I'll have to.  For Kersh.
