Honestly, I think you've overhyped yourself to the point where it won't be scary to you. Personally, I've never found it particularly scary.
Then again, I was an atheist long before I saw The Exorcist, so it didn't affect me in quite the same way as, say, Jaws - it's one thing to not believe in the devil, but quite another to not believe in sharks.

As for The Exorcist, yes, watch it. I saw it in the cinema in 1998 (the film was effectively banned in the UK for many years), and it's not as scary as its reputation suggests - in fact I felt it was a little slow in some parts. However, there are some good moments, and its success and influence on popular culture are undeniable.
Reports of people fainting or throwing up, and the tag "scariest movie ever", are often linked to horror films for marketing reasons (so die-hard horror fans will go and see the movie "as a challenge"). Such films generally turn out to be over-rated: see Silence of the Lambs, The Blair Witch Project, and most recently Frozen.

What Jedi Temple is tastefully describing is a rape scene, a rape scene where the assailant is an invading personality and it's meant to be horrific, and it is.
Blatty is pointedly referencing Dracula (much of which has over the years become a cinematic cliche), the crucifix (traditionally the guarding talisman against such creatures) is turned into a weapon and used in a much more horrific way than just killing someone with it.
The only bit I find unintentionally funny is "The power of Christ compels you!" which is almost Pythonesque in it's accidental comic timing, I'm surprised it wasn't adjusted in the redux version.

Don't. It's just wierd and crummy. Exorcist III is a solid sequel.
^Even if it does hide a much better film that was vandalised by the diabolical suits at Morgan Creek.
Warb is ignoring me so it might be nice if someone quoted me here, the first, sort of official (in the author's eyes) sequel to The Exorcist is The Ninth Configuration which isn't a horror film but has the most amazing bar fight and forms the centrepiece to Blatty's trilogy of films about faith (though it may become a trilogy of four parts if the film of Dimeter get's made).
