And the crushed blacks in the 2004 version of ESB means i really can't use the original transport matte for my edit, so i'm stuck now

And i thought you will redo this shot with model props :(

I only needed the transports that are in that matte as i don't have access to a studio scale model of the transports and the CG transports don't hold up very well at close range but were fine for background models. The rest of the hangar i would be building a miniature set, but without the transports it's hit a brick wall, and i certainly don't want to have to use the shot as it is now :(

Are you planing to do an extensive or radical change of the movement on that shot?

If no then you can sure contact with some people of the rpf.com that actually made the rebel transports and take photos from the real deal and not from a matte.

As for the 3d approach if the shot will not have radical movements and require 3d tracking you can always place a good render and then paint/matte over it with details etc.

Im sure you know all these stuff and i like the way you want to keep it original.

If i have news i will let you know :)

While it's not huge, there is a model of the Rebel Transport in the old Hoth Rebel Base model kit.  It's about 9 inches long and would need detail work but for just one or two shots, and background material at that, it might be doable.  If you're re-creating the same shot exactly then you only need to build it up enough for what you're going to see, which appears to be starboard side nose area.

That's just one example I found at Starship Modeler.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

That really sucks that the guy with the Hi-rez mattes will not let anybody use them. What a waste of resources. Maybe he works for lucasfilm in some form.

Wonder if I could model one of those and do a test composite to see if it could work. The ship itself is relatively easy to model. I could bump map all the detail and since the lighting in the scene is pretty contrasty, I could get away with alot. I wouldn't even have to model the whole ship either, just one side since it's just the side you see in the shot..

Perhaps he's not the only one to have these. What about a request thread ?

Besides, I haven't seen the famous SW expos years ago but wasn't there a lot of mattes ? Possible some have been able to take a few shots ? Just ideas I share.

Imagine that anyone could use the elements that a movie uses to its raw format. then why bother having studios and privacy? Its like someone have the original vader's suit and he uses it for fanfilms etc... Besides its up to artist what to do with his piece if that not contradicts with the company/ies)

Who knows, your guess is as good as mine.

He probably doesn't even really have them anyways.  I could easily say i have the hand prop of Luke's hand but that dont mean I have it.

To have such a piece and not do anything with it but sit and collect dust is goes against what Star Wars is.

Maybe he can't post it or give it away, but then again who says he was the one who let anyone use it? Things get out all the time.

I'm sure with all the resources at Ady's disposal and the amount of fan's willing to do whatever it takes to help Ady find this missing piece, with or without that person's help.

Hope he has a change of heart and let's Ady use it, (if he has it).

and to quote Vaderios...end of story ;-)

... or he's affiliated with Lucasfilm, and doesn't want to get in trouble with them for supplying original copyrighted material to someone who's altering their films.

Does anyone have a high-res picture of the matte painting used in this shot?

I have scanned this from The Star Wars Chronicles:

This is a photobucket resize, the original file is about 40Mb, you can actualy see the weft of the print. I can send it to you via "YouSendIt"…

Aren't the dots from the print too spotable ? Funny it misses some stuff in the BG.

Great if it's for creating a reproduction though ;)

Don't know if this is up to the standard

May be a bit too much like a computer game.

... Indeed the 3D maps are not what I would call "fine". Is it a "what I don't want to see in ESB" request ?

With a bit of Photoshop a lot of the print dots could be removed, some detail & texture could be added to the transports & columns etc.

Awesome find savmagoett!!  I'm in the process of modeling one of those ships, but decent references are becoming hard to find.

Can't wait to see what you are gonna do with this scene, Ady...perhaps add some motion in the background...lights flashing...droids moving in the distance etc.

Nice find there savmagoett.

savmagoett you are a Saviour :) I really can't thank you enough. Just look at those original colours. So beautiful. Just PM me the link :)

It's really good to see you back. Would it be ok for me to PM you because i wanted to talk to you about the varying scales of the transport in the movie.

of course you can, anytime : )

That's awesome

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas
