Aleks, do you have any plans to mod the player to capture PAL as well?
You know of the rebellion against the Empire?
I was wondering about that too. Moth3r's PAL capture has more verticle resolution than the GOUT in some shots, would love to see what this bad boy could do with it.
Too bad its not possible to mod it for Pal, the Tbc chip supports it but nothing in this player has been designed for Pal even remotely in mind. Remember it was engineered and made in Japan. The eprom for the syscon chip would need to be rewritten, then design a new Pal decoder chip and thats way beyond me tbh :)

Aleksbmw , whats the screen resolution for an NTSC laserdisc ?
Aleksbmw said:
Im thinking of releasing a blue ray format release also, since whats the point in IVTC the whole thing then cramming it back into interlaced for a dvd. Progressive > interlaced. Technically by the way those owning the re release gout dvd can watch mine with no trouble since the master tape is basically the same. The 97 on the other hand is another story and i wont go into detail on that just now.
Aleksbmw will you still be releasing a blu ray and DL dvd format of this ?. Could you give me some info on the 97 you mentioned above ???

Be very careful talking about "resolution" for an analogue video format. Laserdiscs don't have pixels.
Since we're talking about resolution, I should point out to Alek that the image in his signature is 39% overheight...

Moth3r, always a killjoy :-P

Yes ofcourse, i dont talk about the 97 much because the first round of captures and work will focus on the Dc Japan set and a look on the Jsc (Japan only special collection; Cav Widescreen set from the 80's).
Im not going to talk about the 97' untill im/we are almost finished with the Gout.

I can't wait to see an awesome capture of the DC Japan set. Which obi set is it, the vertical one or the horizontal one? When I looked on LDDB I saw the 2 different releases, different in regards to content anyways.
I'ts the one with 2 extra discs containing the making of trilogy. Very sharp transfer i might add, almost like its trying to squeeze out of the format. The Disc mastering and pressing is grade A.

Just out of curiosity, any estimates on when you'll have at least one of the films transferred?

Aleksbmw , do these LD'S have Japanese subtitles, if so will you be able to remove them ?

Ah the re-issue without the book. That has the making of trilogy laserdiscs. Making of star wars, SPFX and Classic Creatures. The Japan equivalent to the faces discs CLV had a boxset with From Star Wars to jedi. If you wanted all the remastered making ofs you either end up with multiple copies of the films, from star wars to jedi was only isued in this set with better quality and digital sound, or yuou could have purchased the other 3 docos seperately instead of buying the 2nd definitive box.
I am sure the second does not have the pressing issues as the first, like the initial American release.
There were multiple pressings of the first box in America and Japan.

They do have burnt in japan subtitles but the audio was PCM digital i believe and top notch picture. Picture ratio was 4:3. Best preservation of these was the editdroid bonus discs.
So outside of buying pristine 16mm LPP prints they are the best the documentaries ever looked.
I think Star Wars and Empire making of were made on eastman pre LPP, never saw a print for jedi classic creatures. The only LPP prints i was aware of were from star wars to jedi. The color on the one i saw for sale at one point was near 35mm sharp.

Have the movies got subtitles ?
Below the letterboxing area under the picture and they are able to be masked out in software when making the anamorphic conversion?
All the japan releases have them even episode 1.
One reason no one has ever to bother transferring the pan and scan japan editions prior to the Japan Special collections which were released in analog only for star wars and empire, or the re-issues with digital sound.
Another reason might be because they are the same masters as the USA releases. But that did not stop people from preserving the Japan Special Collection which is the same master as the USA special widescreen trilogy releases.
Only difference the japan release had subtitles burned in and the picture positioned in the higher portion of the screen not centered, like the miss framed pre THX USA release of Jedi.
Also the Japan releases were also in CAV format unlike the American release in CLV.
Prior to the special transfer done exclusively for european pal markets that moth3r did a transfer of all releases worldwide came from the same NTSC masters. Even the PAL pan and scan releases in germany and the UK.
But then the worldwide release of the Gout sets came from the same masters as well worldwide. They did not bother to transfer over the PAL masters, people in PAL land were screwed.
There is no difference in quality in the Japan region 2 release of the gout, except it included for the first time as far as i know on home video the theatrical audio for the 1978 japan release of star wars. But the picture is the same as the American Edition. Not restored, not anamorphic.

What mod's are left for the LD player ?

Not alot, i thought about reclocking the Tbc chip but now it seems it wont be cost effective buying 100 high accuracy crystals and using 1 when the tbc in the player does not decode the signal just Tbc. I got 5 on the way from the states to clock the most important; The master 3D y/c adaptive comb filter in the Runco. So im grabbing a capture card and a few more black gates for the Runco and im ready to show grabs.

As an archive project leaving the Japanese subs alone would be the way to go. Taking them out would negate the purpose of the archive in my opinion.
All these different LD's with different issues and content....crazy.
LOL
Yeah, I'd say do what the X0 team should have done - get the absolute best, untouched raw capture you can get, and release that. That way, those who are good at cleanup and restoration can get the cleanest possible source from which to work.
Hey Chainsaw, dont you love how they STILL have those raw caps and refuse to release them?
Back to topic, Im am very happy to hear this is coming along and I think that these will end up being better than anything the GOUT DVDs could ever be.....fingers crossed

If he really wanted to he could make them selectable rather than burnt in. But since no one around here is Japanese what would the point be?
