It would be nice if Gil Taylor and a whole bunch of the original guys are still around to advise on the project. Probably not going to happen but it would be nice.

I don't know how many of them are still around- Gil Taylor passed away, I think.

Nope, I checked before I posted that. But he's an old dude, that's for sure.

The credited DP of Jedi Alan Hume unfortunately died recently. Although the man that took over once Hume was removed during production is still alive.

..... and Empire's DP, Peter Suschitzky, is still working. He's shot every movie David Cronenberg has made for the past twenty-some-odd years.

I am sure many fans will be torn on whether to buy this release just for the deleted scenes.  But to me it is nothing short of rewarding Lucas for his desecration of film history.

Some positives will come out of this i am sure, just not the oot.  Like widespread adoption of the blu ray format.  It will make a killing in sales will probably sell out in pre-orders.

I am surprised it is happening the way it is though because Lucas wanted a 3-D release of the films to co-incide with the 30th ann. of star wars of course never happened and a 3-D release on blu ray afterward.

He wanted to do the live action show but found it was cost prohibitive.

Star Wars is really only going strong in the comics, videogames and animated series.  As well as in print.

I think Lucas talking about pipeline for things, he was really saying he is focused on the release of that Tuskegee airman movie he made.  Then next year the blu ray of star wars.

You can get players for under $100 and movies for under $10.  Widespread adoption is happening regardless of SW on Blu.

This move doesn't surprise me at all. After the GOUT fiasco, could we really expect him to give them a proper Blu-ray release? The new extras sound cool, and I'll probably give the extras disc a rent like the DVD set, but also like the DVD set, I have no intention of buying this.

I also agree about the reasoning. It was restored in 1996, and I'm sure a lot was digitized to overlay the new effects. Even without a full 4k scan of the original, all they'd have to do is the altered portions anyway. So I'm not swallowing that excuse. If a fan can cut the SE into the OOT, so can Lucas.

Chances are they will be the DVD copies. Complete with bad colors and all. Though I'm sure they're cooking up plenty more alterations to better align it with the Clone War era he seems to greatly prefer. Didn't someone mention awhile back that they'd actually caught some of the continuity errors they'd made in the SE, and planned to fix them. It's ridiculous how they keep changing them yet let those slide. The whole SE just reeks of half-assed rush jobs.

"Lucas also clarified that the original trilogy movies will be included as they were shown theatrically in 1997 and released on DVD in 2004 - i.e., the original versions will not be included. "You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally," he said. "It's a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version."

Dear Mr Lucas,

You are without any doubt a rogue, a rascal, a villain, a thief, a scoundrel and a mean, dirty stinking, sniveling, sneaking, pimping, pocket-picking, thrice double-damned, no good son of a bitch.

sincerely,

We can't lose our hopes. Im sure one day we will se OT properly restored in it's original form.

But, I must say that we have catched Lucas on another lie. Few years ago, he said that all prints all lost and so on. But now he say that it is to expensive to transfer them into digital versions - what means - the prints are not lost, there are only not transfered to digital. Let's wait till he will milk enough money from this BD set and then he will transfers the prints into digital technology.

I think it more likely that the Cubs will win the World Series, the Detroit Lions will win the Superbowl, and the NCAA will adopt a playoff system for college football before that happens, unfortunately.

The Superbow sounds pretty kick-ass, actually. :p

I'd also take a Cubs World Series over the OOT, but I suppose I'm on the wrong forum for that thought.

The thing that really gets me, and we see it over and over, is how Lucas says things are cost prohibitive. He can't afford $10M to fix something that would make him $20M later on? A mere pittance! Do we need to teach him how business and profits work? :p

What he means is that it is cost-prohibitive because it would prevent him from releasing this Blu-ray box set a second/third/fourth time with the properly restored OOT.

Yay profits!

Mayhaps some people didn't hear what Lucas said:

"You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally," he said. "It's a very, very expensive process to do it."

So it's obvious he's willing to do a proper restoration on the OOT if he has enough money. So the OOT will come to Blu-Ray, the only question is "when"?.

He has to do a whole restoration of the SE anyway since the current one is only 1080p. What about the future, Mr. Lucas?

why is 1080p a problem?   That is what the blu ray format is.

I think from a statement like this it's almost a forgone conclusion that what we are going to bet for the Blu-Rays are exactly the same OT transfers from 2004. He really seems to never want to spend another penny on the OT.

But what really annoys me is that he has done a new transfer and restoration for TPM. This was really evident when watching the TPM clips alongside the OT clips at the "Star Wars" concert.  The colours for TPM were perfect, the transfer was clean and the edge enhancement, which plagued both the DVD and HDTV transfers seemed to have gone. And then there was digital Yoda.

So he doesn't mind the expense as long as its only for the PT i guess.

But what about formats after that? 20 years from now, when people are having 4k classics shining out of their wall/tv, Star Wars will be stuck at 1080p forever. Episodes 2 and 3 are, as Lucas filmed them at that resolution, but the rest don't have to suffer the same fate. Eventually they'll be digitally restored, but there's no guarantee that Lucas wouldn't recreate the SE on top of the new digital file, but at least the original file would be there.
