When I saw Angel's chair shift I was expecting the hologram to be more of a full body thing over to one side.
Something like this :
^^ Going that route would work as well.

now the way the color of the video is and the way the set is and the way the charecters look like as they move reminds me of the way a soap opera looks

Except soap operas are shot at 60fps, and have extremely boring lighting. Even with the color changes, the lighting is still far superior to any soap opera.

Not to mention the fact that they are warm and foggy looking. Angel made it look the complete opposite. Cold and dark.
"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I think Fishman is giving us his observations on Avatar's video mock-up and not Angel's still images.
Anyway the video proves (rather well in my opinion) that the concept could work it just needs a bit more experimentation on how it could be applied.
Does it even have to be the same guy?
You could get another actor with a uniform to perform the actions from multiple angles and then make a hologram element from that.

Even so...a soap opera?
These sort of galaxy spanning saga's are often referred to as Space Operas (in a nod to the previously existing genre of Soap) but yeah, I don't know what he's on about either.
What type of Soap? Dallas? Eastenders?
Anyway the Fishman's brain farts aside, I think the concept, if done well could nudge ANH:SE further in the direction of ESB which is no bad thing.

Good to see you back SSWR :D These pics were tests that i wanted to gather a few before posting :P
Since you are here a question from editing pov.
ANH is an example of retro editing.showing things happening. Example is when the company goes to rescue leia and they shoot the cameras. Editing wise they put very quick frames of destruction to create a mess. and sometimes they can create a mess. Do you think that can be fixed and be more like nowadays?

Thanks, Angel. Although, I can't hang out here as much as I might want. :)
I'm not sure I'm fully grasping what you're asking here. But yes there is some quick editing in that scene. Showing closeups of cameras exploding. I think you might be able to cut a few of those close ups out...not sure how many cameras they show exploding...not sure how I feel about that.
But I think I see where you're getting at. For a while now I've thought that a few shots of the Jawas hiding from R2 in the canyon should be trimmed. They linger a bit too long and you can clearly see what these guys look like. Maybe those shots just need some darkening. ;)

Toped :-D
But the holo still doesn't look anything like the holograms in the OT do.
I think it would look better if you added a little feather to the edges of the hologram, it would blend better with the background. Maybe also cut down on opacity. But what really makes a SW hologram a SW hologram is the interlacing, which can be simulated by stationary horizontal lines in a still pic but not in motion. I think the best way of doing it would be to actually do it the same way they did it for the films - shoot the guy from an interlaced CRT screen with a camera.
Thanks Harmy,
Thats me finished with the General scene, I didn't really see anything wrong with the original scene, changing the General to a hologram is really stepping into Lucas' territory; changing scenes just because we can!!...but I had started mucking so I finished it.
The thing that appears in most of the SW movies even the prequels are Kenny Baker's Copex socks, which were used to disguise the fact that he was in the suit.
It would require a bit of work to remove them.
J
IMO changing scenes just because we can is most of what's left to do on ANH :-) With exeptions like the images above of course, but changing backgrounds and colors definitely falls into the cathegory of changing stuff just because we can.

nice one you definitely topped my first one. your had reflection which i have not learned yet. and i loved the red bar sign for incoming transsmission.
my final one and this time i try to stay as close as possible to the vaderios one with the interactive lighting
To me it doesn't quite work having the hologram coming out of the top of the ball.
No other hologram in the saga is generated like that, they are either transmitted via droids (which is why I gave my first mock up an R2 style projector eye which swiveled around and pointed) or they are projected from flat beds usually with a light source underneath.
There is a ring of what look like switched off LEDs around the equator of the ball, I imagine that this would be used to project absent conference members into the seats (that might be cool in the conference scene too if one or two members couldn't actually be there they could appear as holograms, like the Jedi Council in ROTS).
The range could be adjusted to project a full figure like those we saw in ESB.
It wouldn't have to be the same actor either.
The message alert sound used to when the guy tells Tarkin that the Falcon has been captured could be reused (I liked the red incoming message indicator).
Good work fellas and a good stab at the sock removal there Jaitea.

Is that bad? ;) Will we limit our creative decisions because that sounds/is bad and because lucas failed/did it? And what if is bad? So?
@MR J: you did it again :D The highlight was the seamless transition of vader's movement to the right:D
@Avatar: Oh boy you put some serious effort there! The lightning rocks! I love you added chromatic aberration to the hologram! Really nice touches here and there :D
@Bingo: I wouldnt mind if the actor could change to a more nazi one :) No Worries not keeping the originality there!

I'm all for changing scenes to improve the style or mood, just because we can.
Does anyone remember if Kenny's socks were mentioned on SW:R thread and did Adywan have any thoughts about their removal?
J
LoL - I never noticed the socks and I'm sorry I read that b/c now I might always see them. : P
Anyway - I am 100% for the hologram in that Tarkin scene. Nice job on both! I don't know about the old school style radio sounds but aside from that brilliant work fellas.
I prefer the hologram turning on and off with a more subtle sound or no sound at all as in Jaitea's vid. However I like that avatar got rid of Vader's hand gesture.
Damn - I really wish you guys were working for ILM. So much of the work done here even in small examples highlights the lack of care and attention to details the "pros" who worked on the SE had.
Thanks DF Shadow
Another thing I'm not too sure about is the amount of facial hair on the Imperials, yeah it would be ok if the Rebels were a bit scruffier looking but the Empire especially in the next two movies definitely look a bit smarter.
I say 'fuzz-away'!!
J
Now that could be F@cking awesome and impossible at the same time :D
This is great how refreshed they look. Any attempts on motion mr J? If this concept can work i really dig the effect! More changes yeah :D Make that movie unrecognizable :D

The magical floating speeder??
And who's been graffitti-ing on dat wall??
