On a separate note, Moth3r deleted a few harmless off-topic posts in ady's ESB:R thread.  He has let plenty of other stuff slide in there, but something set him off this time.

The off-topic junk that fills up this thread literally makes my teeth grind. Jay and I have stepped in with warnings on several occasions, but these are quickly forgotten.

Ady's ANH:R thread was only 335 pages long. This thread is currently at 753 pages and the edit is still several months away from completion.

No-one is totally innocent. Even Ady uses this thread to describe the renovation of his kitchen - which I can let slide - but posts about, for example, a Pacman game on Google's homepage are pure clutter and dilute any useful discussion.

I don't like deleting off-topic posts - I'd much rather move them to a new thread in the correct section of the forum, but the software doesn't have that facility yet. So, from now on, I have to ask everyone to PLEASE try and keep posts in this thread strictly related to Ady's edit.

I'd have to contend that was very relevant, as it definately related to the progress of his edit at the time.  He'd no electricity for a while!  ;)

adywan is innocent!

Getting rid of the duplicate post glitch would certainly cut down on clutter. Haha. ;)

I'm checking out that link in your sig, Imp. I've done so before, but always nice to revisit. (unintentional pun)

Hadn't really thought of that before. Filmed out of sequence, like the destroyed laser turret before the Hoth battle, maybe?

Looks like an alternate angle of Han poking his head up after it blows up. We see him from the front with debris already present, then he runs up to the mound with the camera behind, then the camera stays to his left for the rest of the shots.

So actually it seems like he's standing behind the mound, then running up to the same mound to shoot it and staying there. Continuity issue, but fixing the mound is a close enough fix.

OK, I have re done my AT-AT fall mini explosions. I kinda preferred my earlier more subtle version, I tried to add smoke plumes but it didnt work out great. However, think I got passed the De-interlaced problems.

Wondering which setting is correct though in sony vegas,

is it upper field first

lower field first,

or progressive scan.

PAL DV best or NTSC,

Anyhow, heres my clip....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1AMypI7L0k

Notice just as the AT-AT is blown to bits, i have included a subtle Shockwave.

I used the blur tool in photoshop and animated it blurring a dome as it goes boom. Very subtle so may need a few watches to notice it but it looks cool.

Shockwave is at approx.. 0:12

Looks great! I really think Ady should go for something like this.

In order to try to keep this thread on topic, Ady has allowed me to write a review of the workprint I saw. I hope you enjoy it.

Revisiting My Favorite Movies

A couple of years ago I was introduced to a fan-edit project called “Star Wars Revisited”. This guy called Adywan was about to release an edit of the original Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope). He attempted to fix most of the continuity errors, enhance the existing special effects, and remove a lot of the ill-advised CG additions Lucas made to the movie in 1997. This involved color balancing the entire movie to fix something that had gone wrong on the DVD, re-rotoscoping every lightsaber and blaster bolt, and basically going over the movie with a fine-toothed comb to fix mistakes most people wouldn’t even realize were there. While he was in there, he decided to further enhance the movie with new effects and almost a completely new sound mix, creating what most fans believe the Special Edition should have been.

Shortly after he released his version of A New Hope, he moved on to The Empire Strikes Back. This made a lot of people worried. Empire is widely regarded as a “perfect” movie by fans, so some have feared that Adywan’s enhancements will detract from the perfection, especially after Adywan started talking about how he was going to build physical models and create all new shots with them and even found a group of costumers in California to film some new shots of Rebel Troopers fleeing the Imperial Walkers to replace some bad mattes.

After several delays, pushing his release date from May 2010 (the 30th anniversary of Empire) to December 2010 to sometime in 2011, Adywan decided to encourage the costuming group (a.k.a. Rogue Squadron) by sending them a rough draft workprint of the work he had completed through June 2010. He also sent one to me to get my opinion on what I thought of it so far.

Empire The Way Your Childhood Remembers It

A New Hope Revisited may be what the Special Edition should have been, but Empire Strikes Back Revisited is the way you want to remember Empire when you first saw it. I’ll try to explain what I mean.

All of the flaws you overlooked when you were young but bothered you now that you’re older are gone. The feeling of excitement during the Battle of Hoth and the Asteroid Field are back thanks to the enhancements giving them more depth. Yoda is more emotive and less puppet-like. Cloud City is the beautiful city in the clouds the Special Edition hinted at so briefly. The pointless Special Edition scene expansions are cut seamlessly away, almost making this more of a restoration of the theatrical version than a fan edit of the 2004 Special Edition.

The version I watched was a rough cut, with most effects shots being marked “TEMP VIDEO”, but the ideas were all there. Adywan isn’t making the Special Edition Lucas should have made; he’s making the version Young Adywan saw in theaters, using his modern skills to fill in where his imagination had to back in 1980. It is a worthy goal, and the time he is spending on it shows greatly. “As long as it takes” should be the mantra for fans waiting, because the wait will be worth it.

Your childhood will thank you.

Nice writeup, 005!

 Hi,

Very nice to read all the love dedicated to this revisited version said turning into a restoration work.

I really enjoyed the theatrical reconstruction Adywan shared for the 30th anniversary, and there are no real flaws I could spot that disturbed me (and I haven't followed that thread far enough to know). But I'm not watching this film every day, nor every year.

So, I was just wondering what 005 called "enhancement" and "more depht", for exemple. I have no doubt it worth it of course, just a question.

Thanks 005 & Ripplin.

Ripplin, the first flames actually come out as the chin hits the floor, as the chin bends the neck back, but i admit it needs work. I think I may have added the follow up flames too soon after the neck snaps making it look like an overall explosion.

It is a bit messy, i may have another attempt. It was only a rush job as i was mainly trying to work out deinterlacing issues, but wanted to see if it worked with a filmstrip file in photoshop.  Wish I could get hold of some 720p or full dvd footage to play with.

Thanks for your support guys. :-)

Thanks Doubleofive for the input about the childhood feeling of the upcoming ESB:R. I'll hope it will feel like when I read the Marvel comics album in the beginning of the 80s (before I saw the actual film!)    :-)

One question: It's been a while since I saw ESB, but I think I remember in the beginning that Darth Vader says "I'm sure Skywalker is with them, set the course for the Hoth system!". Then later Darth Vader talks to the McDiarmid emperor (new scene from 2004) who doesn't seem to know about Luke by name (maybe I missed something?) at first. Is Adywan going to remove Vaders line in the beginning of the movie or how is this handled? If the present officers (Veers, Ozzel, Piett) knew about Skywalker, wouldn't the emperor do so also?

The dialogue is being returned to the original (only now spoken by Ian's Emperor) it's all explained in the first post of this thread.

Anyway, I have a sort of on topic question.  What filter is Adywan using to convert 1080p to 720p? because I would like to know.  Spline36?

Lucky you, getting a preview of the 'workprint' doubleofive!

Very nice little write-up about it there.

Good write up 005...except now you made me want to watch even more than I did before....would give  anything to see that workprint.  Cannot wait for that final release.

After watching this, I'd have to say that, regardless of the additions of the explosions and the like, the scene with the rebel saying "c'mon!" and the following scene with the rebels running out of the trenchs and the snowspeeders flying overhead could be cut and replaced with rebels simply cheering or even take Rogue Squad to film a "rebels cheering in the trenches" scene.  To have them run out and then get killed by either the shrapnel or laserfire from other AT-ATs makes them look pretty stupid.

Let's put this into context: what would soldiers in WW2 do after a german tank is successfully taken out from say a planted mine from a soldier crawling underneath?  Get out of their foxholes and expose themselves to the other tanks, or cheer, keep their cover, and then start arming themselves with grenades and planning on repeating the same successful tactic?

Depends on the situation, but keep in mind there's a company of stormtroopers inside that thing. I'm sure the rebels were scrambling to destroy it before they could deploy.

And the ground commander (?) is just doing what he thinks is best, sending in demolition experts; up to that point, the rebel speeders haven't been able to take out an AT-AT with their blasters.

Or instead of the "cmon" line he can say "the shields are down". thats why the speeder knows to shoot. I liked the visual presentation from yoda1138.

Makes sense.
