This is my first post on this site, though I've been following this thread for quite awhile.

Sorry if this has been brought up before, I've looked through the thread and didn't find this mentioned. But, at over 700 pages, I may have missed it.

The one thing that has always bothered me in Empire is that after the first AtAt gets tripped up, they fly back, blast it and it explodes. "That armors too strong for blasters!"... unless the thing has fallen over? I think this would work better if they simply trip it, it falls over and then we cut to the troops "C'mon!" and they all run out to start fighting. I know we all love explosions, and that's a good one, but it seems totally illogical to me.

The pic posted recently of the fallen AtAt with the troops jumping out and Vader walking through the snow- something like that would be amazing.

Anyways, there's my annoying suggestion and first post.

I always just assumed they hit the magic glow box...

From what I understand, the fall knocked out the AT-AT's shield generator, allowing it to be destroyed by the Snowspeeders.  Also, when someone refers to "armor", it doesn't always mean just the physical structure.  It can also refer to any protective shielding, since it is in effect part of the vehicle's defenses.

Make sense?

Nice try, but the AtAt's have no shield generators. And If they did, how was Luke able to climb up and cut through the bottom hatch?

For the same reason the Empire had to penetrate the rebel planetary shield with the at-ats in the first place instead of just bombing the base from orbit : a shield generator is meant to stop laser blasts and the like from reaching their target but they can't stop solid moving things, including humans, to go through them.

However, the "official" answer to your original question is that despite its heavy armor an AT-AT has one very weak spot : the flexible and unarmored neck. Which happens to be what the snowspeeders hit right before the walker explodes.

But, again, AtAt's have no shields. The wookipedia (god that sounds dumb) page says that the only vulnerable spot is the "neck" which is unprotected. Yet they fire at the "body" of the thing.

Sorry you replied while while I was edited my post.

Not quite, if you look closely and frame by frame they fire at the neck.

Well why didn't they say "Go for the neck! That works!" and start takin' the things down?

In any case, I think it would work better if they just stuck to the original plan of tripping them up and leave it at that. I mean, that stops them. It does exactly what they wanted it to do. And who are the rebel troops going after if they blow up the walkers which would destroy the imperial troops inside? "They destroyed one! C'mon guys, lets go get trampled to death or blown to pieces! CHARGE!!!"

Either way, it never has and never will ruin my favorite film of all time!

...and I can always cut it out myself why Ady releases it! ; )

I think they were the infamous "Rebel Suicide Squad"! ;-)

Off topic, but speaking of being nostalgic, you guys seen the upcoming vintage style Kenner cards? Those really take me back! Gotta have at least some of them! They've done them before but now they are gonna be doing them for prequel figs too.

I've got to agree with ray on this one (welcome ray BTW).

As A kid I remembered it being odd that the Rebel troops broke the limited cover offered to them by the trenches to basically run up to the AT-AT just before speeders blew it up.

I imagine the intension was to have the troops throw grenades into exposed areas of the fallen walker (Luke later proved this was effective) but it was later found to be too difficult to blend the model and live action together realistically and wisely avoided a naff shot by having the speeders shoot some weak spot in the armour (I'm prepared to be corrected by you script experts out there).

It's clearly armour and not just force field blast repellent (that sounds like it should come in a spray can) they make a point of it in the dialogue.

Or you can show Ming and his friends trying to shoot imperial troops that are deploying from the crashed walker like i suggested in an old mockup. and then the speeder comes and blasts the cr@p out the walker it will make more sense(?)

Well this is how i have seen it since 1980:

The AT-At's have armour and not shielding. The neck is not a weak spot normally but when it crashes to the floor the neck fractures and therefore creates a weak spot which the speeders exploit. If the neck was permanently a weak spot then they would have just aimed for that all along.I have no problem with the AT-AT exploding so i won't be changing that

i decided against adding any ground snowtroopers because surely they would have picked off luke as he was about to destroy the Walker or as he was escaping. I was thinking of adding some deploying from the walkers towards the end though but i don't think we could get hold of any snowtroopers for the shoot

Well yes. The concept was adding deploying troopers when the walker is crashed and they are trying to escape or charge.

have troops all the time is pointless like you said.

Is Ming have contacts with TKs?
