The irony is I just removed him from my ignore list because it's a friggin' pain to click the reveal button each time. Plus it screws up the "first unread post" function.

Not at all, it's good practice to update the thread title when the discussion turns to a different subject. In fact, back in the day there was a fairly common convention for flagging a Usenet discussion subject change using the form thus:
