After some ten hours work over the last week I've just had one of my drives, containing about 80% of Star Wars Begins, crash on me.  I am gutted to say the least.  I hope its just the caddy and not the drive itself.

I have ordered a new caddy in the hope that the drive will come back to life.  I am away for a couple of weeks now, so I will post any news when I get back.

Fingers crossed!

Thanks for the update Jambe.

Sorry to hear that, let's hope things turn out okay with your efforts on this so far.

If worse comes to worse, there's a Unix utility called 'dd' which can possibly make a duplicate of the drive.  So that you can use this new version to pick through the files you want.  It's very slow (days for 250gb), but does provide results.  (even though below is a mac webpage, the principle of the process could recover a pc formated drive)

JD, if it is a case of non-mechanical failure, then post again and let us know. I can point you in the direction of some tools that may help recover data. If it is mechanical failure (drive won't spin up etc.) then you are looking at sending it to a (expensive) professional recovery company. I speak from very sad experience!

Mac.

Well in the case of serious mechanical failure, the typical procedure is to open up the drive chassis in a" clean room", then move the platters to a same make\model chassis. Not something to take on if you are not verrry sure of yourself. Which is why it can cost so much.

Well I am currently stuck in Shanghai thanks to the ash cloud across Europe. My drive enclosure should have arrived in the UK by now so I will give you an update when I finally return.

Stuck in Shanghai?!

All you need is a goofy red font and you'd have a perfect dumb comedy movie title there.

I sent a couple of packages off to my cousins down south the other day.

Included were Returning To Jedi and Building Empire and I just got word that Returning To Jedi was watched and raved about by at least one happy family member so far.

Thanks again for making these projects.

They are truly a marvel of gathering, shuffling and assembling sound and vision.

Out of interest, how do you organise the clips before editing?

Do you trim them into easy to manage components first or do you keep the source material in it's entirety in your editing program of choice and dip in and out of it?

With so many sources I'd imagine it would be easy to get very lost very quickly if you hadn't organised everything well in advance.

Madonna and Sean Penn got there first with Shangahi Surprise.

One of the worst films from the 80s!

With BE and RTJ I got all of the source clips together from hundreds of sources and used my encyclopedic knowledge of the films to help me fit them into relevant parts.

I then go through all the material again and again until i've used the best bits in the best possible place and in the best possible way.

So did you do multiple builds of those projects or did you add and subtract from a first cut?

I'm not sure if I'm articulating my question properly...sorry if I am coming across like a bit of a twit but it's really impressive how those projects gather so much together and yet still feel tightly structured.

I have one Final Cut Pro timeline for each project. I add sources to that timeline. I go over and over the timeline again and again refining it and moving things to their rightful place. Luckily I know the films back to front and and able to retain all of the edits I've done so far in my head. So as soon as something new appears, I know pretty much where to put it. The onus is always on getting the maximum amount of source material in there without cluttering too much. I am back from China and now in Spain. Hopefully on my return next week I will investigate the chances of getting my drive recovered. Keep your fingers crossed. JD

Hi Jambe Davdar!

Would it be helpful if I provide the THX Ultimate Demo Disc? It contains the same on-set audio sequences as the THX Wow Laserdisc only with better image quality. Watching Youtube Part 1 seems like it does use the Laserdisc quality version.

Bad news folks. I just heard back from the drive recovery people.  The drive is dead and can't be recovered. Star Wars Begins is no more.

I will pretty much have to start from scratch.

GUTTED!
