Where can I obtain a good quality copy of the ANH crawl including “EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE” from 1981? I know the 2004 DVD has it, but it seems to run faster than my degraded VHS recording of USA Network from 1993 or 1994.

bkev has failed you... my apologies!

It wasn't the crawl I (and ADM, and Adywan) slowed down, but the receding Star/Wars logo before it. I don't know about any changes to crawl speed.
DE
It wouldn't be any good using my ANH crawl as i changed the timeframe that the crawl appears to match the original pre-episode 4 music cue
I just checked the 2004 DVD more closely, and noticed that the starfield is different, too. Since I'm planning to make a DVD with both crawls selectable (using dark_jedi's fixed GOUT as the main movie), along with other features, anything sourced from the DVD won't work. I have video sourced from a laserdisc of the crawl, but the quality doesn't even come close to the rest of the movie, so it would look very much out of place spliced in.
Does anyone know of a good source for the original 1981 ANH crawl that would fit right in? If not, I'll look into trying to recreate it.
Thing about the stars is its the overall brightness that changes that. I don't think they re-created the crawl for '04... did they? It's possible.

Ady, doesn't your AVCHD have the standard 'Episode IV' crawl, without any alterations? It looked that way to me.
As evidenced by the screenshots above, despite using the Episode 4 A New Hope crawl, the special edition star field is the same as the GOUT, which is from '77. So they just composited the newer crawl onto the original star field. Except that the stars are somewhat dim in comparison to how they should look, for some reason.
@someperson - I will try to dig out my laserdisc transfer and upload the crawl for you. (It may take a while before I have the time to get around to it, though.)

@Moth3r: Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
I was recently given an LD rip from a friend. Overall, I think it looks OK, but I have a slight problem with it.
Does anyone know how to get rid of that red haze?
It seems that the starfield used in '77 was replaced in '81. But then in 1997, the original starfield was used again.
Also, looking at screenshot 1:

The unaltered dvd's have the moon on the left only half visible like the 2004 versions while every pre special edition ANH has the moon visible in full. Why is that? Does anybody know why the moon looks the same from 2004 and 1977 but not 1981-1995?
And is there any reason to leave the Look transfer up on that page? It looks makedly worse than all the others.

Yeah, you've got it.
And I still say the best source (assuming you want the 1977/1997/2004 starfield, and not the 1981-1995 starfield) would be Adywan's AVCHD edition. It doesn't have the timing changes that the Revisited crawl does, but it does fix the timing problems caused by the 2004 transfer. (Honestly, does anyone have any idea how the hell that happened?)
So you no longer want the crawl from my LD transfer? I ripped it, but never got around to uploading it (my PM to you is still unread).

So let me get this straight. When they added the A NEW HOPE title in 81, they redid the whole intro including the stars (or just the static stars at the beginning), but when they went to make the SE they went to the original negative and ADDED the A NEW HOPE title again?
Weird.

I used one of the foreign crawls from the 2004 DVD for the Star Wars logo which recedes at the correct speed and you could just splice in the English crawl because i think the starfields are the same

So yes, I still want your crawl.

I just finished rendering out a 720x480 h.264 mp4 (7500 kbps) version of Adywan's AVCHD opening crawl and first shot (since you'd have to replace the first shot of the GOUT as well, as the starfields wouldn't match exactly regardless of whether you're using the 1997/2004 version or the 1981-1995 version), with no sound, if you're interested. I didn't notice until after the fact, but it's true 24fps, instead of DVD-standard 23.976fps - I don't know how big of an issue that would be.
But it does, in fact, use the 1977/1997/2004 starfield, the "STAR WARS" logo recedes at the proper speed, and the crawl starts at the same time it has since 1981 (unlike the 1977 and Adywan's Revisited version, which start at a slightly earlier musical cue). So it is 100% accurate to the 1997/2004 version - if you're a stickler for authenticity and would prefer the 1981 version, go for Moth3r's (which, quality-wise, would match the GOUT better anyway), but Adywan's looks fantastic, and actually matches the original 1977 version more closely with the (obvious) exception of the "EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE" subtitle.
If you're (or anyone else is) interested, send me a PM and I'll Rapidshare it or something. With Adywan's permission, of course.

Ok, here's the best I've been able to get after post-processing Moth3r's video tonight in VirtualDub:
I'm still working on it. For these shots, I didn't use Avisynth at all. If anyone has any suggestions on how I can make it better, please tell me. I am mostly concerned with the loss of stars in the shot. For comparison, here's an original, unprocessed frame:
I have tried this exact project before. I've never found an acceptable version of the crawl. After looking closely at various sources, I noticed that Moth3r's PAL version was cropped on the sides compared to all of the NTSC LD transfers I've seen. I had been waiting for the X0 to be released, but that's obviously not possible now.
If I had some gum, I’d chew a hole into the sun…
It looks too artificially processed. Sometimes less is more.
I also think the glow on the text lends it character.
