dark_jedi, you can ignore my PM's. I think I finally figured out the thing. I'm looking forward to seeing what you've done.

I'm a bit perplexed as to what this project is, maybe I'm being a bit thick? Is this an upscaled HD version of the GOUT?
this is referring to the thread here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/GOUT-image-stabilization/topic/9038/ there are other projects based off of this, be seeing you +1
[no GOUT in CED?-> GOUT CED]

well if you need any help just drop me a line.
Hi DJ, I'm a bit behind - did you use the menus on this latest version? If not I can put the links to the materials up on here in case folks want to do it themselves...

Not yet but I intend to give it a whirl, version 2 has not been uploaded yet.
dj, I haven't had time to watch the full movie, but I took a quick 5 minute spin through ROTJ and it looks and sounds great! Kudos.

DJ,
might want to wait until I get all the scripts worked out, otherwise you will not have de-ringing, improved anti-aliasing, and improved image stabilization.
ESB is coming along nicely.

I've been doing some playing around with AviSynth and the GOUT, and thought I'd post this here in case anyone was interested in the results:
Left: DVD Middle: filtered GOUT Right: unaltered GOUT
The geometry of the image and the colour of the sky are down to my own little programs, written specifically for this scene.

Watched ESB tonight.
Now, I'm not a techie or an audio/videophile. Most of the stuff you guys talk about here goes *woosh* right past my head. I watched this on a 30" HDTV (1080i, of all things), with a home-theater-in-a-box that is 5 or 6 years old. I probably also sit a little to far from the TV. Basically, I may not be the best judge of this.
Having said all that, I loved it! It was so great to hear and see ESB the way I've been hoping to ever since I found out about this place.
Cheers, dj!

Very impressive! Very nice colors. Love it.

I'll have to double check, but apart from the sky the only colour adjustment was an RGB gamma adjustment to/from (I can never remember how it works) 0.71.
I've only skimmed this thread briefly, but I caught sight of some stuff on scaling. FWIW, I would only do any resizing/interpolating to reduce aliasing, then let the TV scale it from there. The upscaled images I saw from either this or g-force's thread looked okay, but I think TVs these days are capable of better (Samsung LEDs are the best upscalers I've seen up close).
If you encode to 1080p, you're stuck with that upscaling, even if you get a better TV.

When I click on the link I get a tiny thumbnail and that's it. Is that what I'm supposed to be seeing?bkev said:

Anything to look at yet,I will surely do some testing but it really has to knock my sox off before I do this whole thing over again.
What happened to the AVCHDs? Are they still in production? I downloaded the DVDs from the usual place, a while ago, but I have not seen the AVCHDs.
If this GOUT sourced AVCHD really is of a reasonably high quality, couldn't a hybrid be made with Darth Editous new 480p project? One could take the footage that was untouched in the special edition, replete with all DE's fixes, and add in the theatrical footage for places where the special addition did make changes, such as Mos Eisley. This would make a restored theatrical version, but one with DE's fixes. That sounds like the perfect Star Wars to me.
I know there would be a slight difference in quality between the two, but I for one would find that acceptable. Much as I admire Adywan's ANH:R, I ultimately prefer the original films; at the same time, I am not such a purist that I don't appreciate all DE's fixes. This sounds like a perfect way to make a polished theatrical version.
Do DJ and DE have any thoughts on this?
Sorry, but what would the point of having it be an AVCHD be?

I don't like PAL speed up. I do actually notice it. It irritates me.
I don't like NTSC telecine judder. I do actually notice it. It irritates me.
AVCHDs have neither of those problems. There is also the fact that h.264 video on a DVD-5 AVCHD almost certainly has the same quality as MPEG-2 video on a standard definition DVD-9, and DVD-5s are cheaper.
I never got the Dark Jedi GOUT set because I heard shortly after that a version 2 was planned. Any progress to report on that or other projects? This thread deserves a bump. ;)

The noise reduction is just too bad in the GOUT for me to want to do this for every SE addition - it was okay for that checkpoint scene, but (for example) when they go past the next Ronto before stopping outside the Cantina, the GOUT quality is abysmal.
I had actually forgotten that I had asked! I don't know what gave me the idea that you had a 480p project in the works.
Thanks for the reply. I did not realize that the other scenes that the SE changed were quite so bad on the GOUT . That is a shame. A high quality theatrical version must remain a dream then; though G-Force's latest offering is very good in terms of quality. If that is the best looking the theatrical version becomes for the rest of my life, I can live with it.
I just cannot abide the SE additions. The only film for which I do not feel quite so strongly about that is the 1997 SE of ESB, which thanks to Adywan we have in HD. It is fortunate that ESB weathered the SEs relatively unchanged, although I wish the ROTJ take of Vader's shuttle arriving had been cut from the AVCHD, as that really irritates me.
