Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released) — Page 14

Yeah, I loved how they approached the Death Star, then suddenly were in Stormtrooper costumes in the detention block. And Obi-Wan's fate... or lack thereof... was interesting. If I'd never seen it before and that was my first time watching Star Wars, I'd be utterly confused.

Can't wait to see the Grande!

I'm just happy you did not pull a Lucas and dvnr the crap out of it.

I can't wait to see what kind of damage the lowry process did on the 2004 once its out on blu ray, like if its whole fine grain structure has been smoothed away to  give it an HD video look like Attack of the clones or revenge of the sith.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

Got the disc yesterday.

I had a brief look - the film is, surprisingly, very watchable. Also, your restoration featurette is a great addition, and thanks for the mention BTW.

Sorry no in-depth citique at the moment, just wanted to post to say thanks.

Moth3r will you post this to the newsgroups?

Not this disc, at Puggo's request (see above).

I think MoveAlong already offered to post, presumably when the corrected version is available?

I watched this last night. I had to stretch the video with my remote control and then the image size was correct.

When the movie started there it was: Star Wars as it was back in the seventies!

I wanted to say 'Thank you for this, Puggo'!

This is a real nice thing and for me a 'must have' for fans. You made also a really nice menu, I like it.

Another big thank you! It looks like no version of Star Wars I've ever seen before - an ancient (yet timeless) relic. Wonderfully evocative.

Presumably the issue of a 'play all' option came up at some point during the planning (the resultant disc doesn't have one) - was the intention to preserve the whole home movie 'reel change' experience? If so, fair enough!

Anyway, who's going to step up and make a cover for this lovely disc?

Actually, when reel1 finishes it should go straight to reel2 and then to reel3, so that selecting "reel 1" is the same thing as "play all".  (except that it wouldn't automatically play the extras.)

I'm guessing that it is not the correct aspect ratio. I initially thought my copy was merely 4x3 letterboxed. But upon closer inspection it was obvious that while it displays 4x3 letterboxed, it was encoded for anamorphic sizing. That is, I'd bet that if you inspect it more closely you'll see that everything displays "taller" or "skinnier" than should be. The print is heavily cropped, so when it's displayed properly, the black bars should seem larger than the normal 2.35:1. I just checked on a dvd player and a 4x3 CRT and confirmed it. Moral of story - nobody needs to share their copy of Grande 1.0...

You can go about your business. Move along, move along.

Hey someone around here's gotta be a completist and might want a copy.  I'll gladly accept a copy of 1.0 if someone plans to destroy the one they've got.

Now with all due respects, that's just insane.  The only difference between "1.0" and "2.0", is that 1.0 has a bug - the widescreen bit wasn't set.  Otherwise they are utterly identical, every other bit is the same.  The only effect of 1.0 floating around out there, is slight damage to my reputation :)

This is true, I think I calculated it to be something like 2.75:1 earlier ITT.

Version 2.0 also had a bug.  The good news is, I now know why, and what I need to do about it.  Version 3.0 should be ready in a couple of days, and I'll let you all know when it's correctness has been verified.

Here's an appropriate idea I had for the cover.  Just a quick mock-up of a work-in-progress really.

I'm not savvy enough with graphic art programs to come up with a final, but if someone likes the idea and wants to flesh it out, I'll be happy to provide full-resolution pics...

Just a silly question:

I think that Adywan did a color correction of the movie based on the 2004 DVD. I mean he changed the 2004 colors with filters and things like that, right?

He did a GREAT job, but now that we almost have a 16mm restored dvd version (thanks to Puggo), can't we use the colors of the Puggo grande on 95% of the scenes of Star Wars revisted? Perhaps even on a HD version of SW?

I know photoshop and after affect can apply colors from a footage on a black and white picture.

Let's just turn a good quality version of Star Wars B&W and just use the Puggo grande colors on it!

Tell me if it's stupid or not.
