I was watching Back to the Future...

And during the commentary with Bob Gale for Part II, he mentions that the picture of Buford included in the movie of Biff's life at the Biff Tannen Museum (this is in the alternate 1985 where Biff is a rich bastard) doesn't match the look of Buford seen in Part III. This is because they hadn't figured out what Buford would like when filming Part II. But Bob then goes on to say that he could change it and make the two versions of Buford match, but he says that he doesn't believe in doing that.

I just thought it would be interesting to share here.

And I've been re-watching the BTTF trilogy, since I just got back my replacement discs of Parts II and III, since the original discs weren't framed correctly. They wouldn't show visual gags like the auto-fitting jacket seen in 2015 in Part II.

Lucas also continues to lead the fight for film preservation. "It's amazing," he says, "that you have to fight the studios to get them to preserve their films. . . . Parts of 'Dr. Strangelove' are gone; some of the music is lost. Kubrick is having to photograph individual frames to create a new fine-grain negative. That's madness, tragic madness."

I sold my 3-disc set and bought the new, standalone edition of the first film.  A much better decision, in my own personal opinion.

But that's interesting about the Buford photo - I never noticed it, and it's refreshing to hear a filmmaker who respects the idea that films are a product of their era, mistakes and all.

People change as they age, and of course wear different clothes.  I don't remember anything in the films about when that pic of Buford was taken, so it could have been several years before or after the events in III.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

Yeah, the commentary there was a refreshing change from the kinds of things we hear there.  In the first film, they talked about how they'd been approached about removing the wires visible on Doc Brown in one shot, but they also shot that down.  They even went so far as to remove the VHS-added "To Be Continued..." ending of the first film in order to get it back to its theatrical release and even kept in the trailer for Part III.  Granted, I wish they had kept in the tag of "Coming Summer 1990," as, again, it's a product of its time, but that's my only complaint about that set.

So, Chainsaw.  I haven't been keeping up with the new BTTF releases.  Why is the new set better than the old one?  I mean, I know it has new bonus features, correct?  But are the transfers of the actual films better?  And would this be due to the extras being on separate discs rather than being crammed into a single disc?  I always wondered how they managed to pull off putting so much content onto a single disc.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I haven't done a direct A/B comparison (since I sold my old ones before I bought the new one), but if I recall correctly, it's just the same disc as before (new label) with a new disc of added bonus features.  I don't have it with me to check right now, unfortunately.

I have the new BTTF1 disc and my old Trilogy set.  I'll compare them when I get home.

Ok, the main disc of the individual release is exactly the same as in the box set.  All the new material is on disc 2, which is as follows:

BTTF:The Ride - all the ride footage from the Lobby and the Ride itself

Looking Back at the Future - new retrospective documentary

BTTF Night - Hosted by Leslie Nielsen.  Bits that were in commercial breaks during the first NBC airing of BTTF

Q&A with Michael J. Fox

That's what I thought.  Thanks for the confirmation, Ziz.

Now I need to get my DVD back so I can watch it ...

Did they ever reveal what movies were on those discarded Laserdiscs in the alley in Part II? ;)

Where were you in '77?

I hope it was the OT.  'Cause that would mean that they got the OT on Yelo-Ray or something.  Along with Jaws 30.

Robert Zemeckis, you really hit the nail on the head this time!

I was watching Back to the Future Part I, with the second commentary, basically a Q&A session with Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis overlayed on to the movie (with no relation to what's happening on screen) and towards the end, Rob says, on the topic of changing things for the DVD:

"I hate that. I don't think you should ever do that. That's like colorizing a black and white movie. It is what it is. I don't get this adding scenes back in, and recutting the movie. I don't get that at all. It should be the way it was at that moment in time. That is the way it was supposed to be."

Somebody tell George!

Lucas also continues to lead the fight for film preservation. "It's amazing," he says, "that you have to fight the studios to get them to preserve their films. . . . George believes the same thing.  You know, for other people's movies.

Yeah in his mind it only applies to comporations or other people including the artists family changing their work posthumously.  He supports artists who change their own work.

If the three stooges were alive and said they wanted their films colored and the black and white versions buried i'm sure he would agree, lol.

How different though are the star wars special editions and lucas,  than a director who ran out of time and money, or the studio took their film away and then the director later finishes the film as they always had intended?

Sometimes even Novelists put out an "authors preferred edition".

My favourite is Luke's scream when he trips/falls/jumps off the vane at the end of ESB.

It just wasn't possible to make Luke scream (the original intent, but limited by technology and budget) in 1979.  So, it was top of the list of things to chang in 1996.  And then it was possible to remove it again in 2004.

Huh?

Seriously. Even though I think his obsession with burying the OOT is douchebagish to the extreme, part of me wants to say 'but at least Lucas is consistent in his ideals about the filmmaker's vision' then he goes and does seemingly random stuff like this.

The only thing Lucas is consistent about with the OT is that any and all changes are deliberate, no matter how illogical they are in context of the film or if they are undone or contradicted by subsequent releases...everything happens on purpose...no mistakes, no accidents.

Yeah, right George.  ',:-\

I have yet to hear a coherent explanation as to why Lucas couldn't get the Greedo shot he allegedly wanted in 1976. ;)

Greedo's gun jammed, and Han killed him before Lucas could say "cut". So, instead of hiring another actor, he said "Shit...oh, well....I guess we'll have to use it...it's good enough...I'll change it later".

Indeed. Yay for that.
