new screenshots or short clips?

Focusing right now on getting the DVD out the door.  After that's done, I'll see about putting other stuff up on the website.  Still fiddling with the menu.

Thanks guys, that will help.  I don't have any intention of posting the video myself.  I'm more interested in sending a few copies out to key members of the forum, and a few more for trades.  Then I figured that someone else would post it to a torrent or something (same as was done for the 8mm stuff).

Speaking of trades, I'm interested in trading for the following items:

  • GOUT with the recent improvements (anamorphic, stabilization, etc.)
  • The Phantom Edit
  • OCP dual layer version
  • Darth Editous / ADM hybrid edition
  • restored original soundtrack
  • Lucasfilm Pwnage edition

I"ll be happy to trade a Puggo Grande for any of the above.

How did the final capture of the mono mix audio come out Puggo?

Are you going to use that or use the restored mono mix, or both?

What about the 35mm strereo mix that was on the 1985 CAV release laserdisc that requires patching because of the side changes?

The 16mm film that I used for the video had a mono version of the 35mm mix (which I didn't use, except in a couple of very small patches).  However, I had a second 16mm print (with Swedish subtitles) that had the mono mix, and that is what I used for the audio.  That is, the video came from one print, and the audio from another print.   I had to sync them carefully because the two prints weren't frame-for-frame the same.  I think the audio came out great, but it probably doesn't compete with the restored mono mix.

EVERYTHING in the Puggo Grande came from 16mm films.  Even the extra.

By the way, I just finished it about 15 minutes ago!  I'll first send out a couple of copies to particular people for sanity checking before distributing.

What he said.

I don't really know if I want to see the whole film but I love projects like this. I think it's amazing that you can make a dvd out of a 16mm film print . It feels real. Again, way to go, grande puggo!

Indeed, let me reiterate that viewers should prepare themselves for lots of grain, poor color, scratches, splotches, grungies, furballs, and other assorted intrusions.  It is hard for me to imagine anyone choosing to watch the Puggo Grande for a movie-going experience when there are so many cleaner options out there.  But it was fun to make, and who knows, maybe there's something buried in there that I didn't notice.

Again, the key phrase here is "lower one's expectations".  :)

Hehe i feel with you Puggo, even tho im spending insane amounts of time on my set up i cant change what was put on my laserdiscs to begin with. The goal is getting all of it in the best way possible with minimal loss. Also grats on your completion by the way.

Yeah now all he needs is to find someone who can lend him 16mm prints of empire strikes back and return of the jedi, just a small task.  Lol.  Just kidding.  Not really easy seeing as they are on everyones want list for films including the scope versions in super8mm.

Me i wish i could score a derann films print of return of the jedi, sadly way beyond my means.

I'd like to find 16mms of Dragon Ball [Z], just for kicks.  Which, apparently, they do exist, and have more picture than either the Toei 4:3 or Funimation 16:9 releases.

Heh, there was an auction for some dragon ball film quite some time ago... episode 23 if I do recall.  The community I frequent denounced it as fake due to it originating from Orange County.

Would've been interesting...

Also, Puggo, I must say just how lucky you are.  What I wouldn't do to have Star Wars on film, even if it was 16mm...

I'll take all those defects any day of the week! This is going to be like sitting back in a theater circa 1978!

I saw Singin' in the Rain on the big screen last week. Nobody was griping about the dodgy condition of the print, they were simply enjoying the movie.

Where were you in '77?

Well said SilverWook, there maybe dust particles the size of a periwinkle, I won't see them at all. It's 16 mm! And it's Star Wars '77!!

Congratulations, Puggo, I can't wait to see it! :D

Well, there's dodgy, and then there's dodgy.  I doubt that anyone in 1978 saw Star Wars THIS dodgy!

Would this in anyway look better in 1080p on blu or is the source material to bad? Or maybe it's a whole other project to scan this in 2k... Yeh I can hear myself that aint gonna happen :p

This project ain't that ambitious.  Just a standard def workprinter grab.  Frankly I don't think it would be worth doing these particular 16mm prints in HD... they are way too beat up.

Well, not SW. I've seen dodgy-er, though. I'm a baby-boomer, and schools used ye olde (and I mean old) film back in the day. And then there was the fan club and their rental films, 8mm home movies... sometimes you'd even see the curvature problem. Heck TV stations showed some pretty crusty films, in the daytime, probably into the 70's or 80's. I remember furballs, and dancing hairs, every so often, for as long as they used film libraries. And they'd burn down a master by the time they made copies for every little venue & tv station.

I didn't realize I missed those little features, of vintage film stock, until I saw one of your early test clips. Besides, you tune that stuff out after a bit. I hope you include the leader - with the flashing single frames & countdown, and everything.

Looking forward to it, mon.

One day I found... 10 years had got behind me. Next day was worse.
