Well according to Luke in ANH there is an Imperial Academy so I could see them as being like the military in the many nations of our world. The Imperial Academy could be more of a high rank kiss-ass facility that gets them ready to be choked by vader when they are on the death star/star destroyers. And the regular storm troopers look like a recruit job. We have military academies here in the US and we also recruit so it could be looked at in the same vain.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Does he really talk about an "Imperial" Academy (I have seen ep 4 in french more often than in english so maybe I missed something), or is it just a "Pilot" Academy? Because it's obvious that Luke don't like the Empire and I don't think he'd wish to leave the farm to be part of the Empire!

Well I am including the deleted scene with biggs. He talks about joining the Imperial Academy which Biggs is in and he tells him that he is going to go AWOL and join the rebellion. Then in a non-deleted scene he says he wants to send in has application to the Academy. So even though in the version most people know he doesn't say the Imperial Academy he really means the Imperial Academy.

With Luke's piloting skills and Biggs talking about jumping ship I assume the academy is for the Imperial Navy (it could even be a requirement for official merchant pilots which could be conscripted too, Biggs does talk about commerce being steadily nationalised).

Mmmm, I did not see the deleted scenes for a while. I understand now. :)

In the deleted scene, Biggs is talking about an Academy that doesn't seem very Imperial. He says he's not going to wait to be drafted by the Empire. That makes me think it's an Outer Rim school that's in danger of being nationalised by the Empire, or a merchant mariners' school -- after all, his posting was to the freighter Rand Ecliptic...

That's sort of what I meant, the equivalent of the CAA (or FAA in America) a state backed training school, licensing centre and administration for pilots (mostly commercial) but from which a standing Merchant Navy (air and sea would be somewhat merged in a Galactic Empire) would be pooled and pilots could be conscripted into the Imperial Starfleet from.

The high officer class even in the Clone Wars seemed to be non cloned and the Empire is much bigger than the Republic (they have a tighter control on outer rim planets like Tatooine which was untouched by the Republic) even before the Seperatists started leaving so I'd imagine they would take talent from wherever they could find it.

On a seperate note, there was apparently a few lines in TPM script that could be put back in an edit using JasonN's blacked out, voice masked Sidious hologram.

When the Trade Federation are fretting about the Senate ambassadors being Jedi Sidious says "You seem to be more worried about the Jedi than you are about me" he then delivers a Force Choke to one of them and warns, "My reach is greater than any Jedi".

Here's a great way to start off the weekend:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VdGOjH6xng

Thanks to bendanger for some ideas from his edit!...who else am I missing?
Major changes:
-Anakin/Padme love exchange is shorter...also no kiss! save it for the end of the movie!
-the monster scenes have been trimmed and re-edited
-padme doesn't simply jump (from 20 something feet) but actually starts to climb down like a human.
-jedi arrive on geonosis
-Mace and Dooku exchange is gone! why was it there in the first place?...they are coming to save Obi-wan...not talk trash to Dooku
-Mace/Jango fight is gone!
-Jango can be seen in the background but he might best be removed entirely...

forgive the sound mix...I wasn't about to go in and add saber and blaster sounds to every shot. :D  I simply removed alot of the mids.

Mace looks great in his pilot's chair (sure it takes some surprise out of his turning up in time but we know he is on his way already anyway).

Perhaps it would work better if we saw the Jedi entering the system before the Arena battle began leaving the lead up free to follow with the anticipation building up in the background (keeping the audience thinking "Mace where are you?").

Nice to see poor Threepio with his dignity maintained too.

Kind of missing the Jengo fight but it never made sense (like Boba, I never understood why a bounty hunter would act as a body guard. his role in life is to find people for money).

It would be very difficult to do but it would be a much more dramatic entrance to have the Jedi land in the arena shoot up the intial threat of the destroyer droids on the way down and jump out of their fighters (like Anakin and Obi-Wan do in ROTS).

If the Jedi were that good at sneaking into a crowded arena I think there would have been more standing by the time the clones showed up.

A massive improvement none the less.

What, no "this is such a drag?" What a shame... ;)

I liked this edit. It did feel a bit odd with no dialogue for so long somehow. I do like, as I mentioned at YT, that Padme doesn't just jump from 20+ feet. Heh.

I also mentioned the following: "I'm hoping someone ... can do something about the HORRIBLE warbling monster effects. Makes me want to punch my monitor. Even just stretch out the first sound and maybe raise and lower the pitch ever so slightly for natural intonation? I don't know how that would sound."

I know, the same old complaint... :p Maybe I'm just trying to find someone who agrees with me.

Overall I really liked it. For the first time I actually felt something in my heart when Padmé confesses her love to Anakin!

I was okay with the changes made to the Jedi's arrival up until the actual battle began. The transition into the battle feels clumsy, like it didn't deliver on all the anticipation that was building in me as I knew the Jedi were closing in. In order for those changes to feel natural there needs to be a better segue into the Jedi reveal at the coliseum.

Can we get a smirk out of Nute Gunray? He's pleased by Padmés dilemma, but if it weren't for the chuckle I don't think we'd have any clue.

Can there be a little bit of dialogue distributed throughout the battle with the droids, just to break up the action? Assuming there is any acceptable dialogue to draw from.

Also, can something be done about strange Jedi girl at 6:21 who doesn't look like she "really" swinging at anything?

Another thought I just had about Padmé and Anakin: I like the idea of, after Padmé has finally confessed her love for Anakin, he's waited so long to hear these words and fantasized about this moment so much in his head, he has no idea what to say now that it's actually happened. Speechless.

Nice edit, SSWR!

I liked how you tighterend up the battle between the Jedi and the droids. That, and the removal of the 3PI "comedy" makes the scene a lot more intense.

The scene where Obi-Wan, Anakin and Padme fight the monsters wasn't editted as good, in my opinion. You moved a lot of stuff around, and kept intercutting, making the scene feel longer than it is, and a little sluggish. There are some good finds in it though, and I liked how you tried to tighten it up. Overall, nice job!

On the subject of sound effects, the feature Soundboards on StarWars.com has a lot of sound effects and dialogue samples without background sound or music. I don't know if he quality of the sounds is good enough for the fanedits going around here, and there aren't a lot of soundbites from the PT (yet), but they may be useful. You can find them here: http://starwars.com/games/playnow/soundboards/#

Excellent stuff - rated and fave'd  :D

I especially admire what you've done by cutting to an all new shot of the Jedi coming out of hyperspace, along with that cool shot of Mace piloting his ship. :)

Hey everyone!

I hope you can excuse me not reading through 95 pages and I'm sorry if my suggestions have already been mentioned. One thing I'd love to see is a little more variety in lightsaber colors. I think it would be cool if there were some yellow, orange, turqouise or maybe even white ones thrown in there. Especially in the arena scene in AOTC and in the Grievous scenes. (He collected a lot of different lightsabers after all.)

Also, how about editing the Clone Wars series into one or more intermediate movies? This probably won't be done since the show isn't that good but if the good stuff is distilled and compressed into a movie it could be cool.

Again, sorry if my suggestions are old.

Please, no more lightsaber colors - I still advocate for blue and red ONLY in the PT, thus keeping the symbolism of Luke's green one in ROTJ - a new color for a new type of Jedi.  But I do like the idea of Dooku having a purple lightsaber, to keep his nature more ambiguous (though I suppose, if everyone else was blue, green would work for him as well).

I still haven't watched The Clone Wars, but IIRC there's someone doing exactly what you suggest over at Fanedit.org.  I could be wrong, though, it might've just been an idea someone came up with.

About the Arena youtube clip: VERY nice! I like how Padme do not just "Jump!" that high.

But I don't like the first facial shot of Mace once in the arena cause we see some Jedi fighting in the background before the actual fight happens. Anyway it's a major improvement over the original and with a few more work on it I think it could be on the level of a AOTC: revisited version.

Good job!

Now, I don't know if it was already discussed here, but in a ROTS making of book it is said that in an earlier draft of the script Palpatine tells Vader that a Jedi killed Padme. I think it would works better than "you killed her" because it would emphasis the hate of vader for the Jedi and his submission to his master, instead of letting the audience thinking "hey Vader ,wake up! How can you say in ESB that it's such a cool power when it is the one that made you kill your wife?! ".

I think we have enough audio footages of Palpatine to make a line "I think a Jedi killed her..." or something.

Wow! Thanks guys for the great feedback! I'll see if I can address this stuff:

Yes, we do know he is on his way in the original edit. My thoughts on that would be to cut that sentence out entirely from the movie. That way right before the monsters attack our heros we have this WTF moment with the Jedi entering the system. We then have this hope of them getting there in time to save them. At least that is what I was originally thinking. I also would have liked to show a shot or two of the Jedi landing near the stadium and going in...

Agreed. Plus the whole Mace/Jango fight never made sense in any way. First, it should've been Obi-wan finishing him off. Second, Mace killing Jango with Dooku's reaction is editted so oddly that I remember thinking the first time I saw it, "There's some sort of subtext I'm missing here. There must be something here that will be addressed in the next movie." I thought Mace might turn to the darkside. I thought he might've teamed up with Dooku...I didn't know...but it seemed to have that sort of vibe.

I'm not sure which "The Clone Wars" you've been watching, but I've been enjoying it quite a bit.  There's much more emotional resonance in any one of those episodes than the entire PT put together, save for when Jar Jar is on screen or when battle droids get dialogue.

Example of a fantastic episode: "Rookies"

I feel like that would undermine the idea of "Darth Vader: The Tragic Hero."

I know not everyone here is as Gung Ho about the EU as I am, but I got chills, when I played TFU and heard Proxy say, after having assumed the form of Vader, "I hate being him," and then get the response from Starkiller, "I think he does too."

Darth Vader can't really be "tragic" if he enjoys being on the dark side.  He has to hate himself.  Yes, you could say it conflicts with his "You don't know the power..." line, but come on, he's lying.  He has his own agenda and needs Luke to fulfill that agenda, so he tries lying to him to seduce him.

Anthony Daniels has voiced 3PO in SO MANY different projects I'm sure you could find something to use.  Examples that come to mind include "Droids," "Clone Wars," and the new CG series "The Clone Wars."

Well that's not right. The Jedi (as seen in the PT) are very dogmatic. They weren't "open and all embracing" at all. Anyone who disagreed with the counsel was banned from the order. It was because of this narrow view that Anakin turned against the Jedi, against the people that didn't allow him to love the one he did, to live the life he wanted.
