@ g-force,1 thing though, when we start working on this it will be in avi form, not m2v,so would you want a sample avi file as well?

Can't wait to take a look at these. I think I will soon need some AVIs, but let me see how far we can get with this for now. It's just so much easier to download if they are compressed, so let's start there.

Here are some new screens to look at,this file has ONLY been IVTC'd and cropped and resized to anamorphic widescreen, still NO post filtering yet, waiting until my partner has a chance to look it over.

I am also uploading an almost 7 minute clip in VIDEO_TS form complete with DD 2.0 ac3 audio @ 384,will add link to that when it finishes uploading.

so as you can see I have NOT forgotten about this project, here are the screens(I would make them thumbnails but it takes way to long to do that):

Well I think that is enough for now,but to me the screens do not do it justice,it looks so much better in motion.

I like the color and the old look on those stills.

Keep 'em coming

Just wanted to say that this looks great. The still shots don't really do it justice, it's when there's movement or panning - that's when it looks great - no smearing!!

Noise/grain always looks worse on stills... on playback, it's only there for 1/24 second, then it changes.

Thanks guys and that is with NO post filtering yet,I really think we will have something really nice here when we are all done.

We are working on the post filtering right now,and so far it looks pretty promising(fingers crossed).

I'm sorry if the question is stupid, but will these have any advantage over the g-forced GOUT when cleaned up/processed/etc?

The Japanese Special Collection just looks really different from all the other versions,it seems brighter and colors are a little different,if you ever watched one of these you would see it is really different.

AsI understand it, this version was not subjected to DVNR (noise reduction) - the GOUT comes from a source that has DVNR. A nasty side-effect of DVNR is smearing of the image when there is movement on screen. Of course, the image will contain more noise because of this (though with modern techniques, and a gentler treatment, this can be reduced without smearing).

Watched the 7 min clip yesterday and put on the gout just afterwards. It sure has a different look.

I have one question though, is the gout on DVD in DVD quality or is it just a transfer in LD quality. Does it use the extra resolution of DVD? It sure has more detail than my LDs...

No.

No, it's worse than LD quality as seen by a lack of vertical resolution.

Now I am not totally happy with the opening titles and crawl yet, something is still a little off(like I mentioned in my PM)and also notice how the image moves around, you will see the edges during the video clip(like wobbling LOL)not sure what that is either, but other than that it is coming around,at least to me.

* Just so everyone knows, post filtering has begun *

That looks pretty impressive so far.  At first I was wondering why the frame was moving around so much, then I realized that's what happens when you stabilize film judder.  It looks like you've done a pretty damn good job on that, too.

There's still quite a bit of dot crawl (look at the Lucasfilm logo and the opening crawl especially - I know you said you weren't happy with them, I just calls 'em like I sees 'em) and the edge enhancement is pretty intense and distracting, but I think (I could be mistaken) that the EE is present on the LD master for the JSC, which means there probably isn't a hell of a lot you can do about it.

Colors look much better than the first sample, and I'm happy to see that the weird green splotch everything seemed to have in the initial capture is gone.  Video noise is greatly improved, though there's still some.

All in all, great work so far - I can't wait to see where this goes from here!

--edit--

Also, if you look in your Version 0.00 screens, specifically at the one of Ben reaching in his box o' goodies for Anakin's lightsaber, you can see that the red in the window bleeds out into the lighter-colored wall.  I wonder if there's a way to minimize that?

Just what I thought.... sorta. Although I think I have a pretty decent LD player(DVL-91 Elite). To bad that you had to have a state of the art and ridiculos expensive LD to get the best out of it.

Thanks for the answer.

Avisynth is SO friggin great, but sometimes it totally SUX!

I am trying to manually IVTC a scene and I had it right, then went to check it and now it is wrong, but when I go back to do it again,my original settings still work, and now it loops the damn avi file, jeez WTF!

well I will fiddle with it a little longer than I might leave it for the day.

the scene is right after Ben's Hut with Vader and the Empire round table.

and we are done yet my friend,we are just getting started LOL.

our goal here is to "try" and make the best transfer we can for ALL of us to enjoy.

and I hope ChainsawAsh remembers he said he would do up fancy menu's with sound, motion scene selection,etc.etc.etc.

OK FINALLY done with the manual IVTC of sides 1-3,just 2 more to go,Moth3r was absolutely right when he said it is a lot of work and time consuming,Thank GOD for AvsP!
Sure would like to know the reasoning behind changing interlace patterns in the same damn scene for, this is some weird shit.

Now it is time to take a break.

The GOUT DVDs are transfers from the D-1 tapes that were also the masters for the Def Col Laserdiscs.

In theory, a D-1 transfer to DVD should be better than a transfer to laserdisc, because of the higher bandwidth (6.75MHz vs 5.5MHz) which translates into more horizontal resolution. Also DVDs store video as digital YUV and laserdiscs are analogue composite.

In practice, there is more horizontal resolution on the GOUT discs. However, for some odd reason, the muppet who did the transfer decided to apply a vertical blur to the DVD (perhaps as part of the IVTC process). This means there is less vertical detail on the DVDs.

Technical mumbo jumbo. But it's interesting. Thanks for the info.

DJ, what sound will the DVDs have?

But still, the gout DVDs looks better on my old 32" WS TV than the '95 LDs...
