I agree it would be great to see...I've thinking and thinking about how this could work...it would be great if one of the Vader/Emperor conversations could be used in this new location...

This isn't nearly as cool as the potential for the scene can be, but it's a visual example nonetheless.
Note: Pretend the rebel in the turret seat just LOOKS like Luke....

Watched and rated. Very cool. Really hope it can happen. Love how you used Adywan's updated footage.
Should no one be able to obtain the cut footage and, on the off chance, decides to recreate the turret cockpit and shoot new footage, I would gladly volunteer my performance expertise as the gunner.

Nicely done, oh! The second shot of the turret works especially well as it's fast enough that the gunner is not focused on.
It's funny, though, I was thinking about this idea lately and how it's yet another thing that parallels ROTJ to ANH. Haha. Oh well.

Think of the Luke footage as a placeholder.... It would be nice to be able to have some random rebel in that seat instead, but the footage isn't available. I just put Luke there to show SOMETHING to get my idea across. The turrets are cool, and it's a shame Lucas and co. didn't bring more attention to them in ROTJ, as I think it would have made the Falcon look even cooler in the battle, and raised a bit of the epic-ness of the battle overall.

Watched, rated and fave'd. Very good ideas going on here. I was thinking we should see some shots of other gunners being blown up in that space battle (not the ones on the mighty Falcon though), kind of like what happened to Dak (Luke's gunner) in the Battle on Hoth in TESB. Maybe include some craft that's similar to the one's seen in the opening space battle of ROTS as well, with some rebels being shot out of their craft - and let's not forget some Imperial casualties too :)
All in all; the shots of Luke firing at the TIEs is a pretty decent placeholder, and the edit does feel quite natural :)

I'm moving my response to this chain of discussion here for obvious reasons.

It really does kill the mood.... But the space battle in ROTJ is still IMHO the greatest of all the films. I'm still amazed at how well the ships maneuvered with them being models on wires. Great work.
Seriously I agree. I mean, each ship is a separately shot element composited who knows how much time later. It's impressive. And to only have a couple mislayered/disappearing elements is extremely impressive.
All three layers of the battle need to be expanded in my view.
How does a small group of Rebels defeat an entire legion of the Empire's best troops to bring down the reactor to allow the Rebel fleet to survive being attacked by a large Imperial fleet and a full armed and operational Death Star?
The ground battle is only a mood breaker because it currently makes little sense and has no real visual and emotional impact.
All thos improvised traps show pre-planning how can they plan unless they know that the troops are coming or unless the Ewoks have already been fighting the Imperials?
You can't diminish that aspect of the story without diminishing the whole finale of the saga.
The duel needs the least work on it (beyond the obvious technical clean up, sabre corrections and the like) but both the land and space battle are vital to the resolution of the story.
I like a space battle as much as the next guy but as Lucas once said and never followed through with "story does matter" and there is more to the story than just a big space battle and a sabre duel.
The Ewok side of things carries the key to downfall of the Empire (the Emperor and the Empire see things in such broad sweeps they forget about the power of the little people be they Rebels, Droids or Ewoks).
The scale of some of the original shots was amazing at the time but it is astonishing how fluffed up more simple shots are even after the so called element by element restoration we were told happened back in 1997.

I have to agree here. The ground battle has no rhyme or reason to it. It is also incredibly small in scale, even for it's time. Look at the Hoth battle, then look at the Endor battle, and the Hoth battle's epicness dwarfs the battle of Endor by quite a bit. There seriously needed to be more troops for BOTH sides, but more importantly for the rebels. During the battle, it almost appears that the ewoks take over the battle and the rebels basically disappear, besides Han, Chewie, Leia, and the droids. And even the heroes, who up until this point in the OT have been the center of focus in the story, seem to take a backseat to the ewoks, as they really do all of the action it seems. Han and Leia shoot a few Stormtroopers while trying to open a door and smirk at each other, while only Chewie gets to do anything cool (hijack an AT-ST).
If anything, the mission should have been less of a battle, and more of a stealth mission, as the characters expected it to be. More excitement could have been made from a handful of rebels trying to break into a highly guarded base than having a bunch of teddy bears outsmart a few dozen Stormtroopers and a couple AT-STs in the woods on a nice sunny day.
I've already talked about how to expand on at least the Millennium Falcon's part in the space battle, though I think other places in the battle could be expanded as well, such as the idea of having a Mon Cal ship and a Star Destroyer attacking each other similar to the space battle in ROTS. There is even a brief shot in ROTJ where the two ships align next to each other like that!!!
The Luke/Vader rematch, as far as I'm concerned, is fine as is, except for the annoying swinging Luke does after screaming "NEVER!" as I mentioned before. Seriously, he looks like a blind kid trying to hit a baseball at times! At least that part of the duel could use some tweaking in editing.

I'm gonna blame GL for this - Mark Hamill actually came up with some really nice moves according to one of his interviews and he said that he and his stunt co-ordinator created the last part of the duel a lot differently - so that Luke attacks Vader with only one hand on the blade, and Vader backs off trying to block every swipe until he is defeated. This would have been better; but Hamill was told by Harrison Ford not to argue with Lucas' decision(s) on how the duel was to play out.

EDIT - OMG! Yes! This is where I heard Mark talking about wanting to do the end duel differently. His Harrison Ford impression was hilarious as well. (Btw, on Part 2 - 5:33 for anyone who wants to listen to that part - but watch all of it, great episode)

i have to show this:

It might add to the impact of the full force of the Imperial legion entering onto the scene if we saw them actually arrive in large numbers with support vehicles and the like.
In the current version the Rebels sneek in and when they are captured and lead outside we see a medium force of troopers with a few AT-STs and a few bikes (not really that much more than would expect would have been at the base in the first place going by the size of the buildings around the landing pad and the nature of the project they are protecting.
If while the Rebels were in we had a sense of the approach of a thousand strong deployment of previously hidden troops and the associated equipment it would underline the threat in Palpatine's boast. Imagine the impact of seeing a large army crunching down the forest on their approach to finish off the "pitiful little band" of Rebels and match that with the excitment of having an equally surprising counter attack.
That coupled with evidence that the Ewoks were planning to attack the Imperials before the Rebels turned up (by showing they had already killed some troops) so the traps don't magically appear overnight and adding some evidence of the Rebels using equipment they brought with them on the Tydirium (which could be more if the ship was a captured Imperial transport ship and not just a shuttle). It would add tension, drama and credibility to the ground battle and enhance the mood of the other battles rather than detract from them.
It might even be fun to have a few more Wookees in the strike team by pinching a few from ROTS (Chewie can't be the only Rebel Wookee and it would be a nice nod to the original intent of the battle).
The ground battles in the other Star Wars films had approaches which cranked up suspence (ESB, TPM) and large reveals of the forces involved (AOTC, ESB).
Something like that in ROTJ would really raise the bar for the finale of the saga.

That struck me too when I saw the movie on TV the other day.
In the shot where the Imps run in after the Rebels, there are only a pair of stormies and a pair of officers, when the place should be swarming with stormtroopers.
Btw, the second AT-ST that is walking around when the Rebels are led outside is translucent and green. Instead of trying to try to make that walker look better, I think it would be better to replace it with a few AT-STs surrounding the clearing, with their guns pointing down.
Well the special edition of ANH multiplied the storm troopers on the death star and even gave them a tie fighter. So in ROTJ the same treatment can be applied.
"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

This idea was posted on the ESB:R thread but Ady isn't going to do it so I'm putting it here in case anyone else want to have a stab at it :
Bingowings said:Not really a suggestion for ESB:R (unless it was an extra and Adywan has enough on his hands as it is) though if Ady likes the idea and can find a way to pull it off ithat wouldn't upset the pacing of the escape it might work in the edit proper.
To justify Lando's cooperation with Vader against Han & Co it might be a shocking addition to the the panic on the streets and corridors of Cloud City if we saw Imperial ships landing and picking off Cloud Cars (maybe even shooting the crowds ala OS Galactica).
It would underline how much Lando had to balance his responsibilities to the citizens under his care against his loyalty to his friends.
A lot of people still think Lando was a coward (Leia certainly gives him a hard time for it) for caving into Vader but if we see some of the consequences of an Imperial take over of the city the audience would get a better idea of what he had to lose.
It would also remind the audience that it wasn't just the Rebels that Imperials were utter gits to.
When we see Cloud City again during the celebrations we would also get more of an impression that their liberation was personal rther than a political abstract notion.

Making '69' the Imperial channel was a semi-conscious decision. I wanted to have a channel 69, but using it for the dirty channel would have been too obvious.

With all the recent talk of starfield spinning, along with making all the Rebel fleet in ROTJ jump to the same vanishing point, it might be nice to add the spin to that shot too.
