I've had the idea to color correct the prequels on my mind for some time, now that I've got some time I made some tests and this one I'm quite happy with. Besides color correction, I also changed the music since I thought the original piece was weak. IMO it quite changes the overall tone of the scene. I'm considering to do a full blown edit, do you think it's worth it?

you know, it's pretty sad: your short edit probably has more emotion than all 3 of the prequels (as filmed) combined.  I love how there are no words being spoken and yet you get the broken love theme just with the images and music.  If you can do that for the rest of the film(s), go for it!

PS: I'm still pestering people as to how to do color-correction (still trying to figure out what I need to do and with what program would be best) for my ALIEN:R.  Is there a tutorial you could point to, or just information to give?

PPS: the color correction is PERFECT!  I love the color pallete you chose - no more ORANGE!

Hate to break it to you Monroville, but the original scene didn't have dialogue either (aside from Anakin hearing Palpatine's voice). ;-)

Not to discredit Cade's good work, but the scene as it is, is already very powerful. Cade's color correction (or should I say 'alteration') didn't do anything about that. And oh yeah, the scene is tinted in orange...because the sun is setting!

That shot is from AOTC and its orange glory.

I tried to make it with more ROTS colors tho. IT WORKED :)

There is a thin line between orange mood and ONLY orange.

See:

ROTS is at sunset but it has the correct sharpness, the correct tones, VARIATION of tones and never messed up colors.

I've already explained, not very many pages back, how this can't work without performing a similarly radical edit on ANH.

I'm sorry but I'm not totally convinced of that yet.

If an edit *can* seperate the Anakin character from the Vader character (which, by the way, will be no small feat) then when you come to ANH and Obi says "A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the emperor hunt down and destroyed the Jedi knights...he betrayed and murdered your father." it simply sounds like Obi-wan is lying to Luke about his father. Luke doesn't know anything about the force, Jedi, Sith or Darth Vader so Obi-wan can get away with this "lie". And then once we get to ESB and ROTJ we learned that Obi-wan was telling Luke this from a certain point of view to protect Luke and to help him learn and grow up as well. At least that's how I see it.

The only thing that bothers me is why would Obi-wan say that Darth Vader was once a pupil of his? Unless....this could be addressed in the PT...? :D

As someone has already mentioned, the only way this could be fixed is by doing a radical edit of ANH (which I'm against as this would mean making the OT fit with the PT) or somehow giving Obi Wan another apprentice in the prequels - impossible.

Going back to my radical idea before (which was pretty much shot down by most people) the way to fix both in one fell swoop would be to not have Anakin appear in the prequels at all. Hayden is named something else. Let's just call him Puke Whinetalker. That way, in ANH, we think he is referring to Hayden's character when he says "a pupil of mine until he turned to evil" but then it turns out it's not that guy at all, and he was just saying it to spare Luke's feelings.

If Obi Wan never referred to Luke's father as "Anakin" in the hut scene in ANH, things would be a lot simpler. All that would need to be done is omit the name Skywalker from the prequels entirely. That way, we still have a hunch that Vader is Hayden, but no idea that he is Luke's father.

Adywan, I know you're busy, but would you care to weigh in on this? I would love to hear your take on this Anakin/Vader thing. Please?

Wait......does Obi Wan even say the name Anakin in ANH? I just skipped through the hut scene and didn't notice it mentioned.

I think I may be onto something :)

All that would need doing to the prequels that way is remove the name skywalker and remove the twins being named and delivered to Alderaan and Tatooine.

This could work!

Yay! Recognition! :P

I think coupled with some edits that seperate Anakin from Vader (and no Vader in freaking armour) this could be a double whammy of revelations in ESB.

Vaderios, I get what you are saying, but those are two completely different situations. In the AOTC picture, the sky is clouded, which makes for different light than the clear sky in the ROTS picture. Also the sun seems to be in differen positions in both pictures. Anyway, it's just my opinion. Feel free to color alternate away!

It's an interesting idea, brash_stryker, but I think you'll hit a couple of snags when you go that route. The PT is pretty much Anakin's story. Your idea would require it to be Obi-Wan's story, but Obi-Wan's part is way too small for that in TPM. Also, Obi-Wan is way too young in TPM to have had an apprentice before he finds Anakin.

And if Hayden isn't Anakin, what would his arc be then? It wouldn't be too good for Obi-Wan's character if he has had not just one but two apprentices who turned to the Dark Side. And if you are going to make Hayden turn to the Dark Side in your edit, how are you going to do that? Because from the OT we kinda know that Anakin was seduced by Palpatine. If we see Hayden's character seduced by Palpatine in your edit, this is then supposed to have happened twice (to the Anakin we don't see, and to Hayden's character).

Once again, it's an interesting idea, but in my opinion, it's quite problematic. But I do think it would keep the punch in the ESB reveal, and might even make it bigger.

The bottom shot feels more human. The above shot looks like a world that couldn't support human life like earth in Wall E. I am an outdoors person and I lived in Louisiana for about 4 years. Louisiana was the flatest place on the planet so all I saw was buildings and the sky. About every afternoon in the summer time looked just like Angel's colour corrected picture. So it works. Now I have never lived anywere that was purely orange, and I have lived all over the country. To me, Angel's colour correction looks like my old neighboorhood in the future.

Is that straight from the DVD? Because this is what I get in ROTS:

It's definitely better than AOTC, but the tint is clearly still there, even considering the sunset.

BTW, thanks for all comments on the scene. I will be making some tests to see whether I can pull this off prequel-wide.

Some of you may know movies that have futuristic landscapes or cities and its the age that Star wars came out.

if you can provide material to match the colors and mood then it will be very welcome. I think a John barry's approach is fair enough to capture the mood and the way of the OT. Despite the fact that ady can make props to that.

Anyone else thinks that coruscant can look like krypton? I mean that look not just white.

Anyways,

Cade and ESF take my place with your mockups as long i will enjoy the sun :)

Take care all

You did a nice job with it. However, I don't think the music conveys the correct mood. It's as if the music to trying to take center stage, when  should only be the background.

On a general note, I would have timed the music to climax a moment earlier.

Funny, I got that feeling too, but only slightly.  Overall, I have mixed feelings about the edit. I enjoyed and was touched by both the music and the color alterations, which were beautiful; they were just so pleasant to look at.  The problem is that I can't see this fitting in well with RotS.  Though, when I say RotS, I mean Lucas' RotS.  So, the thing that I get unsure about is whether or not I can see them working in an edit that adopts changes like this to the whole film.  I keep asking myself, "Would they work well in that respect, or conflict with the content in terms of story, staging, performance, etc.?"  I'm split 50/50.

What about lengthening the amount of silence between "How did my father die" and "A young Jedi named Darth Vader..." in order to imply that Obi-Wan has more internal conflict over whether or not to tell Luke?  Something along the lines of: cutting from Obi-Wan looking down in shame after Luke asks the question, to Luke with that curious deer in headlights look, then back to Obi-Wan with his head down, quickly back to Luke, and then to Obi-Wan again for the reveal.

Watched and rated.  I kinda felt that the color work in this one didn't pop like the other did.  Honestly, I didn't feel like color alternation was necessary.  It came off to me as like a bright coloring book, which feels inappropriate for that scene.

I also didn't feel like the music fit.  I have to second what Davnes007 said about the music stealing the stage, and I felt like the only emotional beat that the music acknowledged was the beheading of Dooku; it completely overlooked all the smaller ones that came before that, which the original track does not.

Completely agreed on the music. I rushed this one quite a bit. And again completely agreed on the volume of the music, I just listened it with earphones and I completely went overboard. I'm deleting it and will reupload a better version.

Funny you mention the color work, because this one was completely untouched. That's why it looked like a "bright color book", just like the rest of RotS does.

Speaking of coloring books, can anyone remember which project it was where the editor was making a coloring/comic book version of a PT movie? It was some sort of filter he applied that made the colors really pop. It was meant to be a bonus or something. I'm blanking on which it was. Something from quite a while back...

Scratch the Hayden isn't Anakin idea. My idea now is that he's still Anakin, but never referred to as Skywalker :) Because the name Anakin isn't mentioned until ROTJ this would be no problem in preserving the mystery.

Really? Well, "shut me down." I don't know why I thought everything looked like a neon-light.  Maybe I've been playing The Conduit too much.  Yet another reason why I need to re-watch RotS.  Sorry for my mistake.
