Color Correcting?

Hi everyone,

I have never color corrected any of my video projects before, but would really like to know how it is done and with what software,I "know"there are members here that know how and know how very very well,but I do not want to call anyone specific out,so please if anyone can give either a brief tutorial or a simple example how to, that would be fantastic.


especially if you have "dull" looking video and would like to brighten up and make the colors look more vibrant.

Most video software that I've worked with has some kind of color balance option.  I used the trial version of the consumer version of Sony Vegas to make my Lando Sacrifice video, and just with some sliders I made it look worlds better.

Compare this with another cut.  It's not hard to do once you find the option.  Slide the sliders till it looks the way you want!  You may have to do each shot seperately, but you only have to do it frame by frame with mattes or in Photoshop if its a really bad source.

Adobe after effects i would say is an invaluable piece of software for colour correcting. It has so many more tools than vegas for doing this type of work. Using the Hue/Saturation tool you can change the saturation/hue & brightness of individual colours. The way i colour corrected star Wars was by doing a first pass colour correction in vegas then remove the blue tints in After effects and sort out the rest of the colour mess.

After effects is the best video software I have ever owned. I tried others like final cut pro and premeire but nothing really worked near as good as after effects. And vegas is pretty useful too.

Yeah, After Effects is great, as long as you're not trying to work with video and audio at the same time.  Ugh.

All video editing programs have one thing they are pretty buggy with. Vegas is very good for the actual moving and cutting/Editing process. After Effects is were the magic happens LOL.

Thanks for all the info guys.  I think though, DarK_Jedi was after more of a step by step guide or something similar as a way of getting started into this sort of thing.  I know I'd find something like that very useful as well.  There are little bits and pieces of info on colour correction etc scattered around the net, but nothing comprehensive or complete  (and free) that I can find unfortunately.

I found this here on the Doom9 site which goes into some basic correction near the bottom of the page and a bit more here.

Theres also some good info on Zions X0project site here on setting black and white points and other info which will be very useful.  I know black and white points are not 'colour', but this is a hugely important part of the whole process and will affect how the colours look in the finished video.  Defintely well worth a read.

I know this is late,I just remembered this thread LOL,to many damn projects at once going.

Thanks for all the info already guys,but can someone give an example of how to use AE for color correction,I need to know what to click on after I have my lossless avi loaded,this program is still very,very new to me,so any pointers would be GREAT,or even a small tutorial.
