Speaking of models, and this may fall into the category of "killing a fly with a sledgehammer", but at a sci-fi model convention I went to over the weekend, there's a guy who just started producing a studio scale (or maybe larger) Twin Pod Cloud Car.  Thing's gotta be about 24w x 18d.  It would be perfect for creating whatever cloud car shots you wanted to straighten out the various Cloud City flyovers.  Down side - $400...PLUS shipping.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

So, no one else noticed the bad compositing/outlines of Lando, Leia and Chewie on the balcony? I'm sure it's ILM's fault and not Ady's, but is there any way to fix it? It sticks out.

these are all problems with the original elements. there isn't much i can do without having all the separate elements and re-composite them i'm afraid.

But it it possible to just slightly tone down the blurriness, especially around C-3PO? I mean, you did add the blur, right?

I agree. Too much blur.

Maybe a slight bloom/light warp to make the edges blend more gently.

Now the layout of the pits on the executor changes in ESB. Look at the shot at the end f the movie when Piette orders the officer to "ready the tractor beam". its actually the avenger bridge pit. no one seems to have been bothered by this before so i'm not too bothered about it now.

If you bother it again let me know to make some mockups :)

And here something that can help Ady and other editors for cloud shots : http://www.e-onsoftware.com/products/ozone/ozone_4.0/

ady, a couple questions for ya:

1) how exactly did the added TIE fighter lasers cause problems in the asteroid chase sequence?

2) where'd you get the 2 "yes's" from for the Emperor's new dialogue?  Sounds great.

As for the Star Destroyer bridge pit continuity issue, is it possible to simply "cut and paste" previous shots of the pit into other shots?  If not, I'm happy thinking that maybe the consoles just pivot and can be moved around.

Yes, if he could just change/remove the Imperial officer leaning to look at the monitor with the sittinong officer that would help in variation.

My "cut and paste" suggestion was due to my concern for keeping the configuration of the bridge pits consistent... I was not so worried about repeated shots (although I know that's a personal source of frustration for you).

I d love to keep the lasers that the TIES firing at MF at the asteroid chase( adds more color to the scene)

I was surprised at that too. Hope it makes it into the final cut, as I was really impressed with it.

sorry, but the lasers are gone for good. After i added them there was just something wrong with the sequence that i just couldn't put my finger on at first. it was the lasers. i tried removing them just from the shot where the TIE blows up but that didn't work so they had to go.

It's cool, Ady.  Personally, I think the scene works just as perfect without the added laser fire.  Just being in that asteroid field is a big hazard by itself.

It might make sense if the the TIEs were shooting at the asteroids and not at the Falcon, Vader wants the ship and her crew alive but the TIE pilots might need to clear a path through the rocky chaos to try and keep up with her (they do lose a lot of ships smacking into the things).

Possibly part of the reason why the laser blasts might not sit right is for the same reason why there shouldn't be thousands of fighters shooting the hell out of the Falcon as it escapes Bespin, Vader doesn't want them dead (he underlines this to the Bounty Hunters he hires).

Clearing obstacles is another matter.

the glow of the sabers should be visible in his eyes

actually you wouldn't see the glow at all. the most you would see is a point of light. i may add the point of light but only if i can do it convincingly.

Your right it would be damn near impossible to pull off convincingly, but if anyone could pull it off it would be you AFAIAC

Regarding the TIE fighters laser fire in the asteroid sequence:

What was throwing it off for me was the slower pace of the laser blasts.  Maybe if the laser blasts were made to be consistent with those in ANH (with the faster rate of fire and the sound FX) it would work better...

Regardless, I would like to see the TIEs have a faster rate of firing to match with those in ANH in general, even if just for the continuity.

The asteroid scene doesn't really bother me. I say as long as it has the speed that flows with the music like the original. And even then I dont care what he does. Adywan I have said it before though. Please keep the tie fighter that gets its left wing clipped and it does the Wha da da da da da da da BOOM thing even if you reshoot please let it do that. I have always loved that even for the sound. I listen to the asteroid chase on the ESB soundtrack and hear it in my head. Just keep it please.

Ady, just watched the trailer last night, and I have only one word: breathtaking!! now I see why everyone talked about the "city in the clouds" scene, it's spectacular! the pacing of the trailer is also great (now I see why they said you make good trailers, right on the tick man!)

Even though the lasers are "gone for good" as Adywan put it I kinda missed them on the sequence, it added that sense that the Empire (with it's fighters) is right on their tail, now it just seems they are chased, from MPOV it's not as dangerous as it was. Sure the asteroids are just as dangerous, but if you add asteroids AND the lasers it was like a nightmare laser rate, spacing, direction, all that can be fixed and changed. But no lasers....that's a sad thing, for the rest, I'm really looking forward to 2010!

There is one addition in the trailer that I find a little bit silly, though. That is that the Echo Base gun turret shoots after the Snowspeeders after they have passed it.

  • The gun turret fires very close to where you would extrapolate the snowspeeders to fly.
  • The snowspeeders have yet some time to reach the AT-AT walkers. So, the AT-AT's would still be quite far from the gun turret. Right?

The turrets may have a longer range than the guns on the speeders, Luke only concludes that the armour is too strong for them to penetrate with blaster fire after the first few runs.

So the turrets firing isn't silly from the Rebels point of view as they hope it's clearing a path for the Speeders to attack.

I agree with Bingowings, it's the same reasoning behind the ION Cannon, fire in the same direction as the ships, what do they call it? "lay down some cover fire"? so that the blasts help to clear the path.

There were other scenes when the TIEs are fireing at the MF and we do not exactly know how the TIEs targeting system work, but from a New Hope it looks like the gun turrets can be adjusted or aimed like when Vader says I have you know. If the TIEs are not doing something to stop the MF like fireing laser what else ould they do to slow them dowm or capture them crash into them ?

The consensus is....

This is a beautiful shot.

All that could be done to make it better would be to add couple of bright orange Tibanna Gas Platforms in the foreground to help clutter the shot, a reference to the EU character Dash Rendar and maybe a space slug diving in and out of the clouds in the distance to offer a sense of foreboding.

:P

You mean like the flying spaniel in The Never Ending Story?

Ok:

Something that is interesting.

I was looking the mattes and the live action sets and they have some differences.

I tried to match as match i could with both ways to make the thing work.

The bridge have different panels in the close ups than the matte.

As we see in the only live action piece (vader and a little piece of the road) the bridge is a bit reflective. A BIT! so some slight refections is a nice touch.

Now when vader comes to ask for the tractor beam the room he enter have different shape that we saw it in the matte. I made an efford.

Plus notice the black line that conects the two pylons. its missing in the close up with the lines in the floor.

Also the pylon should overlap some stuff and not showing to be in the same level.

In further notes i add some lights to gain a bit more life.

I add the missing window in the close shot.

Now the bridge is more symetrical.

Oh and i replaced the poor star destroyer with one from a later shot.

And in case you miss the differences:

Edit: crap, I forgot the little line over the little window...

Next time
