School.  I kinda thought community college was going to be easier than it really turned out (I guess I'm in a "good" community college, lolz).  Once Spring break comes around I was thinking of finally shelling this one out.  I made a promise to Trooperman's project too, and I can't let that project down either.  Haha, can't believe I put so much on the damn plate here, but we'll see how things turn out when the quarter finally ends, and I'm only working pretty much every day, rather than working pretty much every day and going to school on days I'm off.

Anyway, so don't worry about it.  The good news is that I got the '77 theatrical surround "preservation" done.  I just need to reinstall Premiere to go get it.

1. Am I right to think you use the HD broadcast (being the best source) for the 90% of the movie, and replace the few "enhanced" scenes from a touched-up version of GLOT? Then what is the 2004 SE version good for?

2. Will the 6 channels audio sound as good as the the 2004 SE 5.1? This may sound heretical, but I liked listening the trilogy in 5.1.

3. It might be too late, but do you still have issues with the color correction and the right luma levels throughout the frames? If yes, perhaps I could help you a little bit. Could you send me a few pair of screencaps? A "before" screencap - the one you want to tweak; and an "after" screencap - the look you want to achieve by tweaking the source screencap. The more pairs you can send the better. My method in AviSynth doesn't involve pixel-for-pixel geometry matching. It'll match both the luma levels (by doing an arbitrary luma curve) and the colors non-linearry without bleeding. I don't know how will it work on your source, but it's worth a try.

I'm sorry to say this project is being put on the down low for awhile.  A number of things happened that, once again, have disheartened me from finishing.  I've done the same editing maybe 20 times since I was a Senior in high school because projects either get stuck or disappear and the whole thing needs to be started from scratch.  It's stupid, I know.  On the editing side a project like this should take a few weeks max.  I was actually restarting completely about a month ago, using Sony Vegas, but somehow ran into a software issue there too (fancy that).  I'm waiting on WG version as a possible source.  I'd like to see the quality difference between the 9 gig sources I was using and the 50 gig source he'll be providing.

I tried to find my 77 theatrical preservation, but found out all the files for it somehow got deleted during a reinstall of Windows.  I looked at one of the preliminary mixes I made, but there are numerous mixtakes that make it unusable.  I have to start from scratch there too.  Also lost during the reinstall was every soundtrack provided to me by one of the members of the board (belbucus' stuff).

All this, and college too right?  My attention has also had to shift slightly as I've gone into pre-production on a self financed independent film.  It's hard to say whether this project might, after nearly three damn years, might be considered vaporware.  But I'm going to wait to see WG release and see if I can use that as a starting point and try once again.

To answer your questions though:

1. Yes.  And the 2004 source is good for shots with hard-coded subtitles in frame, like the Greedo scene, so I can put in subtitles that better match the theatrical release.

2. Yes the 6 channel source is from the laserdisc 5.1 soundtrack for the 1997 SE.  It sounds wonderful.

Wait... you mean ALL the work you've done with this project so far is GONE? Painting light sabres, layering stars in and out, color correcting, removing yitter, and a lot of other things in the past 2 or 3 years I can't even remember, all for nothing?

Well I didn't paint any lightsabers.  I tried to bring back the stars for the opening shot.  Color correcting was all about trying to tweak it from the histogram functions in avisynth.  I don't know what yitter is.  All I was doing (and had to do about ten times over and over again) was edit in the non-CGI shots, mix HD/GOUT elements when possible, try to get the avisynth automatic color correction function working, collecting audio, making my own mix, and of course try and export the project so I could see how I was doing (this I never could get to not fail during the encoding process).  It was lame, but yes all that is gone.  Any one attempt never took any more than a few weeks before I hit an insurmountable wall.

Again, an edit like this only takes a few weeks.  It was running into territory where I didn't know what i was doing that was the problem (ie manual color correction, trying to correct a couple lightsaber shots).  I will try again when new source material presents itself.

I've meant jitter, sorry. Judging from the opinions in this thread you were still doing better then the earlier versions. Quite sad all this has been lost. On mixing HD/GOUT elements you mean taking a part of a frame from the first source, notching it with the other part of the same frame from the other source? And this way covering a new creature George put in the background, for instance?

Anyway, I hope you'll try again doing a HD version of Star Wars. Count with me with the color correction issue, I really think it is worth a try. It may not be good enough for this source, but there's a chance it'll turn out very well.

The 1st rule of doing a project like this is to always backup your work very regularly onto blank DVD's or external hard drives so that any progress is not lost no matter what happens to the PC or the hard drives in the PC. :)

So I've reviewed the mess of ideas I've had going in my brain for the past few years.  Tell me what you think of this one:

-Video: Adywan's AVCHD color corrected version of ANH, losslessly converted (for compatibility purposes) to 23.976 fps.  I do not know if this will require simply converting the framerate or actually slowing down the video.

To "de-se" the source we'll use the GOUT, as cleaned up as we possibly can make it.  G-force's thread is dedicated to stabilizing and cleaning up this material.  There is also a new project that may in the future provide a new laserdisc capture that might surpass the quality of the GOUT.  Video is synced to the GOUT so all future audio projects can be appropriated to this one (people's audio projects always seem to be synced to the GOUT right?)

-Audio: All the ANH mixes available as noted here, plus a track that utilizes the 1997 optical capture from Adywan's AVCHD version as a source, which is then edited and remixed to emulate the original 77 six track as a 4.1 mix (this will also require the subwoofer channel from another member's project--I'm sorry I forgot their username but the track they gave me was awesome).  The source used to "correct" the 97 mix is the 77 stereo preservation of the six track mix, upmixed through the graphedit method Moth3r provided me with a number of pages back.  I have gotten this all to work, I just lost everything during a reinstall.

-Method: Oh God I don't know...I'll use TSmuxer to get Adywan's video off the BD9.  I believe I can change the framerate with this program without changing the source.  This file I will import into Vegas 8 (although that's where one of my attempts got complicated.  The imported video would play fine until suddenly the video ran at half speed and stopped after the destruction of Alderaan).  In Vegas we'll bring in the GOUT or laserdisc capture and do the basic editing required to get rid of all the CGI and editing changes.  BTW my computer runs much faster now so editing the HD sources might not be as impossible as it once was.  A separate project can be dedicated to the 4.1 mix.  With editing completed, we scale down everything to DVD resolution and export a real Star Wars DVD. Anyone with a better methodology please scold my awkward attempts and teach me!  A blu-ray version might be nice, but we have to consider the source material.  It would basically be the HD broadcast having gone through about 20 generations by the time I rapaciously steal it.

-What do I got?: Right now?  I don't got much.  I have Adywan's BD9/24p AVCHD project, and with it the 1997 mix.  I have the GOUT of course.  I also have a few shots that were donated to me by Adywan that reinstate the matte painting in the detention block at DVD quality.  Very helpful.  I have none of the audio projects I once had.  Looking for:

  • [not completely necessary] The 12 gig encode of Ady's AVCHD project (I thought I heard something about this existing and being available am I wrong?)
  • Any of the sound mixes from the previous list I gave, and any new projects people have worked on over the past few months that I've been foolishly absent.
  • [not completely necessary] A slightly smaller sized version of WG's BD project if the color correction (or "adjustment" as he likes to call it) was amply done by everyone's collective standards
  • A capable partner to cooperate with.
  • [not completely necessary] the new laserdisc capture if it becomes available in the future and proves to surpass the GOUT

I already stated that I'm not even sure if my methodology and computer capabilities are reliable with the video aspects.  I'd be happy to double team it with someone else and work on the 4.1 mix while they work on the video or something.  Maybe the problem with projects like this is that they are quite difficult, and we never reach out and ask for cooperative efforts.  Let me know what you guys think.

BTW, I'd like to make it clear that I'm engaging in a project like this with all the humility of someone who has not done any of the actual work that people like Adywan, G-force, dark_jedi, Belbucas, or anyone else have spent on their projects that I have now appropriated for my own uses.  I do this because I know you guys have done work better than I could have (and my record shows my lack of real skill).  I do take pride like a good DJ in the way I sample and synthesize these wonderful contributions into a new whole.  Thank you.

would love to see someone do the first restoration for blu ray of the theatrical trilogy.

You would of course need to start with the original ts files for the german broadcasts probably, add the english title scroll back on from either the uk or us broadcast.  Color correct the whole thing to match the gout footage and upscale the gout footage,lol.

Add on all the audio mixes for the films, keeping off 1997 and 2004 mixes and using the 97 to create a faux version of the original 70mm mixes.

Fix the garbage mattes, lightsabers and things that were just glossed over because lucas and ilm ran out  time, what the 20th anniversary edition should have been not adding cartoons cgi to the movies.

The garbage mattes around the tie fighters in what is now called A new hope will look like shit on the official blu ray unless ilm digitally masks them out, paints them out.  They shoud not even be there if they did what they claimed they did on the restoration documentary of recompositing the elements for those shots digitally.

Smearing and artifacting everywhere, this was a problem during the premiere of the dvd player with there being only single layer movies from laserdisc masters, but in 2006 when there are stellar anamorphic movies out unacceptable.

it is an absolute joke that the only watchable copy i have of a new hope is fan produced, and has pal speedup. Moth3r’s. I heard citezens was better but that is not available as far as i know except through trades.
