Wookie Groomer's 1080p Star Wars Saga project (Released) — Page 11

I've just checked the release notes from AVCHD Presents and they credit the WG releases so you're absolutely right about the source material.

My WG transfers are siting on my redundant HTPC (redudant since my PS3 took over my media stuff) but I was due to be dusting it off and hooking it up to my suround sound system so if nobody else confirms, I'll see if the audio track is absent in Eps 1 and 2.

That aside, it would be fantastic if Eps 1 and 2 could be re-encoded with the audio fixed in AVCHD but I agree, it's a lot to ask.

What is the quality of Episode 1 in HD?

The dvd had edge enhancement issues and bad dvnr.

Would anyone care to post screen shots of the movie, not here of course but on one of those photo hosting places.

I don't think anyone has done a comparison between the HDTV version and the dvd.

Supposedly the pal dvd release was not as bad because of the increase of resolution of the pal format.

Maybe a lot of the problems in the dvd is the compression was not handled well and it is bitrate starved.

Is the HD version the theatrical or DVD cut?

A theatrical version in HD with the Dolby digital EX laserdisc audio would be awesome.

Yeah thanks Wideload, if you, or anyone else can let me know if the WG versions have the correct audio.  If they do I at least kind of have a way to maybe get a fix for this.  I'm on a mac here though, and pretty much have zero options for making AVCHDs.

Sky although this HD EP 1 still has many of the same problems, its like night and day compared to the dvd.  Still grain and EE, but the increase in detail pretty much makes up for it.  For me this was the major problem when I got my HDTV a year ago.  I sat down to watch the dvds, starting with TPM and I had to stop like a min in.  2 through 6 are kind of decent but EP1 was just unwatchable.  With these menace still has the worst picture out of the 6, but it is still pretty great.  I just hope that for the official BR they go straight from the digital files and not have the extra film step that the transfer has now.

This is really the best way to watch all of them, its just this dam audio issue on 1 and 2 that keeps perfection out of reach.

Balsho - I will hopefully hook up my HTPC to my sound system tonight to check the audio tracks on Eps 1 & 2 of WG releases.

Anyone have suggestions on how to fix the audio on the AVCHDs of Ep 1 and 2?  I thought if there may be a way to unmux the M2TS file then mux it back with the ac3 audio from the dvds, but I predict having sync issues.  Also this process is only good if it and the subsequent re-authoring back into an AVCHD can be done without re-encoding the video.  PLEASE anyone got any ideas for this?  This has become the ultimate tease for me, I'm foaming at the mouth to watch these, but this pretty much kills the whole saga for me.

I have tried hooking up my HTPC to my sund system to check the audio on Eps 1 and 2 on WG's encodes but since I last used the PC, I have bought a new receiver and cannot get anything other than 2.1 out of my PC on anything!  So, working on the assumption that WG's work has the full 5.1 in Eps 1 and 2 (and I don't see any reason why it would not as his quality is superb), I am going to see about creating AVCHDs of Eps 1 and 2 from the WG encodes.

My problem is that whilst I have a perfectly good PC to do the work (3.2 quad, 8gig ram) I don't actually know HOW to do it!!  So there's some research for me to do which will take a while (PMs of advice most welcome).  I will drop a post on the AVCHD forums realting to these encodes to see if anyone else has noticed the audio 'blip'.

Cheers,

We really need to get all of Wookiegroomer's stuff uploaded to alt.binaries.starwars again.  I just got a trial account to Giganews, and the only thing that's available is the last half of the Episode 3 files (back from July of last year).  Is there anyone out there willing to repost?

I'm more interested in Episodes 1-3, as I got 4-6 a few months back (the DVD9 versions), and trying to find Eps 1-3 via torrents is extremely difficult (they're out there, but the torrents are very old and thus there are hardly any seeders).

If I sent WookieG a PM, do you think he'd repost for us?  Or is he "off the grid" for this kind of stuff these days?

Thanks,

Visor

I posted this over in adywan's thread, but then I remembered about this one, so I will post again.

It looks as if all the ps3 avchd releases have slipped away on the newsgroups.  I use Giganews and Astraweb and they are no longer there.  Any chance of some re-ups of the prequels, and perhaps RoTJ?  Once up again, they'll be there for a long, long time.  Giganews is increasing to 365 days of retention and Astraweb is supposedly trying to get to 400 days!

I'm working on new mega bitrate color adjusted BluRays of the saga. I'm trying to kick them up to notches unknown as far as quality and presentation so stay tuned... Start saving your pennies for BD-50 disks!

Oh!!  Maybe I'll go in on a burner with a friend.  That could be awesome.

Sounds neat... now if I had a blu-ray player and/or burner I'd be all over that!  Of course, I'd be someone is probably gonna downscale them slightly for DVD-5 or 9 anyway.  So, until then, -waits patiently-.  And this would be the whole saga, right?

Um... downscaling them for a DVD would defeat the whole purpose.

Not the color correction though... and I believe there have been comparisons showing that a downscale HD looks better than a regular DVD.  In fact, earlier in this thread comparisons were made that showed at least a slight gain in detail.

Color correction.  I stand corrected.

Oh I c wut u did thar.
@Wookie: interested as to how much color correction you'll be doing.  Will it be of a light level like Adywan's, or will these be frame-by-frame corrections?  And, PLEASE start with The Phantom Menace.  I don't wanna sound like a little bitch, but dear GOD that needs it almost as much as Star Wars*!

I call it color adjustment because using the word "correct" is purely in the eye of the beholder. Let's just say I plan to share the editions I prefer to watch and that have been in the planning stages for the past two years. And stupid me, I should never post anything after drinking... Samples have been posted weeks ago in the hdtv binaries.

Thank You Wookie Groomer for all of your work!

I personally cannot wait for your new Mega Bit Rate Release, you are a hero to all, and none of the other HD versions hold a candle to your presentations.

They're still broadcast quality though, is there much of a difference to be had by encoding to 50 GB discs?  It would be very fine to see the HD versions as uncompressed as possible, but they're still broadcast quality HD.  I'm just wondering how much noise and encoding artifacts are inherent in the original capture.  And a bitrate that simply matches the broadcast streaming bitrate would probably look as good as the hdtv source ever can, right?

This is still a very exciting project though.  You have my forum subscription.  :)

Hi Wookie Groomer.

I was just wondering if you've uploaded any of your new HD versions to Usenet?  Last night I came accross some 18gb HD encodes with UK text in the opening crawl, etc.  Previously I've only ever seen the German text on files of this size so I grabbed ANH last night.  Seeing the rars prefixed with "I brake for Wookies" made me smile and wonder if they're yours?  I couldn't find an .nfo so wasn't sure.

Anyway, it's a .ts so I slapped it through TSMuxer to create a blu-ray and burnt it to a blu-ray disc this morning.  Watched a few minutes on both my PS3 and a couple of outher blu-ray players and it looks very nice indeed.

So, I'm hopeful that it's yours?  If it is; what I've seen looks very good and will watch in full tonight.  I'm grabbing ESB and ROTJ this morning....

Cheers,

Well in the absence of any confirmation or otherwise I'll stick my neck out and say that I suspect these aren't WG's work that I came accross on Usenet the other night.  They're 18gb sitting in a.b.hdtv.repost and I've burnt ANH and ROTJ o blu-ray discs and they play and look nice.  There is an audio problem on ESB whereby the native .ts file is recongised and will play using VLC on my HTPC, TSMuxer finds an error with the audio and leaves this out of it's muxing.

Any news Mr Groomer...? :-)

No news yet. It seems there is a plauge of issues for those that wish to work on the trilogy in some form or another. I dumped almost $1000 into new audio/video assets, hardware upgrades and other misc things to create the ultimate edition of Empire on Bluray and wouldn't you know it, my system board fried just as I installed my last upgrade of a quad core processor that I spent my last dollar on. I have run into one barrier after another and just at this moment got the new system up and running again. Now with terrabytes and terrabytes of hard drives space, Quad core processor and 8gigs memory I hope to finally get this going again. I am hoping to make this a 2 disk set when all is complete but with all the technical issues I am running into I may have to make some compromises here and there. Right now I scrapped a months worth of work because I felt it just wasn't perfect enough.

Thanks for the update - very much appreciated.  It seems to be a minefield working on the movies in HD and I for one hugely appreciate your efforts; not only in terms of the vast amount of time that you must dedicate to this project but also the cost.  I've also recently upgraded my system to a quad core with 8gig of ram, a BD burner and a couple of terrabytes too so I know that it's a costly process too.  I guess that patience and tenacity is the key for you and your attention detail is well known but the end result will certainly justify the means.  I can't wait but will be patient and look forward to seeing it when complete.

Cheers.
