Can someone please explain to me whatever happened to the PIF policy on the forum?

I have tried many many times to get hold of edits and no one is willing to help me out.

I have offered to supply discs, postage or anything they need, proof I owe the originals as well but no one is willing to lift a finger unless A) I’m a super editor like Adigitalman or Fanflirtation or B) I have something to trade.

If I am neither a high ranking member nor have a stockpile of other edits then I’m left with nothing.

I donated to Adywans amazing edit of ANH and have my name in the credits for my trouble, but have I even seen it? No is the answer. Why? Because my experiences with getting other edits has taught me not to even bother asking anymore.

Why are some people selfish and/or greedy?

Sounds like you are asking all the wrong people.

I for one, have never been asked by you for anything. Yet I suppose I'd fall into the umbrella category of "everyone" who is so selfish and/or greedy". Be careful before pissing on everyone, you might be burning your bridges.

One problem is a lot of the guys who were big into edits have long since left. Throughout my time here I have been met with a lot of generousity, and I have always had very little to trade, and I am not a "super editor" like ADM of FF.

Another problem is, hardly anyone believes in PIFs anymore, because they always broke down pretty quickly and the same generous people were stuck with being generous all the time. It is nice to be generous, but I can see some of these guys giving up on PIF after realizing how much of their personal money they are throwing away to people not willing to do the same for someone else. Some people have lifted a finger so many times before, they are done lifting fingers.

And finally, another issue is that it is just easier for most people to download this stuff and burn it on their own. I doubt there are even enough people still around interested in getting this stuff by mail to get a PIF going.

Also I am pretty sure when Ady's edit first came out, I read quite a lot of talk about PIF chains in his thread, so some people were doing it.

So, what are you looking for exactly? Just Ady's SW: Revisited?

Another thing with the PiF's is that I know a lot of guys (myself included) have developed a 'been there, done that' attitude.  I have given out hundreds of discs in my day.

I think that the members of this forum are now a lot more savvy, so they know how to download the projects without the need to set up a PiF chain.

Lastly, there haven't been that many new projects around here (I mean on the Star Wars front) that I'd consider starting a new PiF chain.

I've done PIF chains.  Here's the problems I encountered with them:

1) People love to get discs, but getting them to PIF themselves is an entirely different thing.
2) People request things, then get mad when others simply don't have them to PIF.
3) People request something you have, then get mad when they don't get it exactly the way they'd wanted it (for example, my PIF copies of SW:Revisited included a printed cover, but no disc label - I got complaints about the lack of a disc label and the fact that the cover was printed on standard inkjet paper.  Then I ran out of cases to put the covers in, and being a poor college student wasn't able to get more, and got complaints about the discs being without labels in little CD envelopes.)*
4) Since you can't keep doing this forever, you count on others to PIF as well, but when you turn down more offers, no one else takes your place and people get mad at you again (kinda goes with #2).

*Note that there weren't as many complaints as that implies.  Most people were nice about everything.

Holy meatballs C3PX! You are totally right, god I feal a fool, I see where you're coming from, and sorry of course I havn't asked EVERYONE and I shouldn't have said that.

You see the thing is I have very limited access to the net and most definatly can't download anything. And plus I'd been off the net for a while and when I finally got back on all my PMs had gone and any subs to topics. So it was like being a newbie and any contacts I had made were gone and I couldn't remember anyone.

A note to ChainsawAsh. You were printing covers and given cases out! Are you mad, thats way way more than you needed to do! I would never expect that much effort! A blank data disc would be fine and I'd burn the DVD myself! I feel for you man you were had big time.

The PIF chain can be a problematic one at best. There are so many that jump on it and then disappear once they have the disc and the chain ends. I sent out about 100+ DVD-5 versions of ANH Revisited all over the world. Almost all of them had a printed label but i didn't print any covers. I printed the label out on the lowest settings because of the amount i was burning to send out was using too much ink. I got pm's and emails from about 30% saying that the disc label quality wasn't very good and could i send them out another disc with a better printed label and a printed cover this time. needless to say they were put on my ignore list and they will never get another disc from me ever, the ungrateful bastards. So you can see why many don't bother sending out discs any more.

Just because your experiences in the past i wouldn't stop asking members for copies. There is a whole new crowd here now and i still see people in my thread offering to send people discs of revisited and in other threads for other edits.

I didn't print the covers because people asked me to, I did it to be nice and to give the fan edits I sent out a bit more legitimacy.  The only reason I got complaints was because I promised in my forum post that told people to PM me about PIF's that I would send out copies with covers.

I don't appreciate you saying I was "had big time" when you don't know me or the story behind that.  It makes me look like an idiot and a jackass.  Don't do it again.

And if you have limited 'net access, how the hell could you burn the DVDs yourself if someone sent you a blank disc?  That makes no sense!  If you want a copy, but can't dowload it, how could you burn a copy onto a blank disc someone sent you?  Why would you even need someone to send a blank disc to you in the first place?  Buy one!

Besides, I've never seen a PIF request from you anywhere.  Where did you post them?

I PM'ed Troy (and he responded to) my standard offer - PayPal me $5 to cover blank discs, paper, labels, disc case, postage and mailing package for one copy of SW:R.

First of all - chill dude, ok that was nice of you to print covers, I never said people asked you to but what I was saying was I wouldn't and I wouldn't expect anyone else too either.

Second - I'm sorry I offened you but I don't appreciate you having ago at me either because you misunderstood my post, see below. Just by that comment you do make yourself look like an idiot and a jackass. If you've come on here just to have ago at me then I'd ask you to please leave.

Third - When I said "A blank data disc would be fine and I'd burn the DVD myself" I ment a DVD with the film as data with no label or case or cover.

Fourth - I never posted about starting a PIF only asked people through PMs, that's why you never saw anything.

As for Ziz just tobe clear I only want the discs, I have my own cases and will print the cover myself. And as I remember it some have the edit covers are on the disc anyway arnt they?

I used to be a big advocate of PIF, but then I found torrents.

Torrents are easier, cheaper, more reliable, and (most of the time) faster too.

With PIF, I need to find the time to make the copies and go to the post office. The cost of the discs is negligble, but paying for padded envelopes and postage is a pain too.

I should have called this thread something else really. I was getting at the PIF thing but in general, why where people not being very helpful unless I could supply them with a trade, when I thought the spirit of the site was to pass stuff on if someone asked and only ask for payment for postage and/or discs.

IN REPLY TO C3PXSo, what are you looking for exactly? Just Ady's SW: Revisited?"

I was after SW:R but also stuff like Indiana Jones edits, Bond, Matrix, Highlander, some preservations as well.

my experiences with PIF is the same as Ady,but now I am a little more harsh about it,I have sent out ALOT more than 100 DVD'rs over the years, and sure there were alot of cool and nice people, but there were alot of ungratefull assholes to,and now I do not do PIF anymore.

There are just to many people wanting these fine Discs for nothing, and then do NOTHING in return,I see no problem with someone wanting to do a trade for a discs, most of the times it ends up a win,win situation for both people involved.

if you guys would just spend the time learning the newsgroups, torrents,or rapidshare instead of all this bickering for handouts you would already have the discs and have watched them a few times, and then see how you like getting asked by PM's 100 times for a PIF.

sorry for the rant but when I saw PIF in the title I just had to comment,PIF does NOT work it SUX!

Granted a lot of people I send Star Wars: Revisited [DVD9] to don't PIF further, but I don't mind. I'm just happy to have it, and Here in a PAL region [OZ] we'd be stuck with NOTHING If Adywan hadn't seen fit to PIF to us. It seems that no one is interested in sharing the PAL version online, and those like myself who are simply don't have the means [I guess I can't speak for everyone, i just don't know for certain].

PIF can work but it's always going to be a gamble. People need to be reminded that it's about giving and not so much about getting.

I apologize for coming across as an asshole.  That happens occasionally online - when I'm talking to someone in person I don't do that, but online it's a different story for some reason.  I always end up looking like a jackass instead of making my points diplomatically.  I'll try not to do that from now on.

The forum never had a PIF policy. Some fan editors chose to initially distribute their projects using this method, that's all.

I have offered to supply discs, postage or anything they need...

That is not PIF.

If I am neither a high ranking member nor have a stockpile of other edits then I’m left with nothing.

And - it's a harsh fact, I know - but that is precisely what you are owed. The ability to read a forum on the internet and send private messages does not automatically entitle you to a copy of the latest fan edit. I'm not getting at you in particular, but I'm tired of receiving PMs from people expecting me to "help them out".

Why are some people selfish and/or greedy?

Why do some people make whiny posts when they don't get what they want?

nothing, just get it like everyone else does, either by newsgroups, torrents,or rapidshare
most people, but not all ditched the crappy ass PIF system a long time ago,me included, but that said, there ARE some very nice people still around here at OT that are willing to hook people up,that number is falling fast, but there are some very very nice helpful folks still here, with a little reading and asking, you will find them.

Do your own.

You seem to be forgetting that distribution of material subject to copyright is illegal. Members who are sharing these projects are risking their own necks for the benefit of others.

I wasn't offended, just mildly annoyed. You started a thread in the Fan Edits and Preservation forum that is off-topic - the subject is nothing to do with fan edits or preservations. You just felt compelled to have a moan because you're not getting your own way.

You act surprised and hurt that no-one is willing to help you. And yet you accuse us of being selfish?

You also use words like "idiot" and "jackass" directed at ChainsawAsh, and you've got completely the wrong impression about the "spirit of the site".

Just because you are a mod dosen't mean you have to have ago at your members

True. But if I feel like "having a go", I will whether I'm a mod or not.

I can second this. I've been here years, and in that time I've asked lots of people, mostly through PM, but also in a couple threads... offering postage, blank CDs, to pass it on to others, etc, and gotten nothing. Nobody here has ever helped me with anything. I don't doubt that there might be someone out there who would be willing to help, but none that I've ever asked qualify, and no one has offered to help in response to my asking for it in a thread.

It's on easy-to-find torrents. I just opened the .avi torrent through LimeWire, downloaded it, and then converted the file to .wmv, and watched it on my laptop.

Not sure if I'll burn it onto DVD anytime soon. Don't see any need to right now.

So Adywan's edit is more than readily available to the curious. It doesn't require any trading, postage, or anything like that. And heck, someone even posted it on YouTube.
