Computer Help

Hi everyone,

I seem to have attracted the Virtumonde/Vundo trojan.  It opens unrelated popups and slows the HELL outta my computer.

The problem is, none of the solutions I"ve found work.  I've tried Spybot (in use it says), Ad-aware (this program is royally screwed up for god knows what reason), and tried to install the highly-recommended Malwarebytes [this is how wiki says to get rid of it actually] to rid myself of this curse.  I've even tried a program MADE specifically to get rid of this.  Alas, NONE of these solutions have worked (I think this Vundo has actually blocked me from installing malwarebytes)... can anyone help me please?  This is the family's computer, so I can't exactly wipe it without causing trouble.

And yes, I have tried manually deleting the registry.  That doesn't work.  Thanks to anyone who can help.+-

Try starting the computer in Safe Mode and running Spybot from there.

And make sure that OS is Linux or OS X.

Sorry, I know it's a dick move to tell Windows users to switch to something else when they ask for help.

I was one of the fortunate ones who never had a virus or trojan (to my knowledge) in all the years I was a Windows user. The only advice I can offer is the same as Moth3r's. Nuke and pave.

The only way I got rid of that on a computer was to reinstall the OS.  Sorry bud.

Funny story.  This computer had already crashed a couple years ago and they paid a ton of money to get it repaired and lost all of the their personal data.  I opened up the case to see inside and there was their old hard drive, in perfect working order with all of their files on it!  They paid me to fix it and let me keep the hard drive (only 20 GB, but I've been keeping my copies of Revisited on there so my wife doesn't complain about the full main drive).

Try Spyhunter,I had some bad shit a couple months ago and this was the only program that got rid of my issues.

now PC is fine and just as fast as before.

There is also a little program called Vundofix.

Get a new hard drive and reinstall Windows.  Put the bad hard drive in as a second drive.  After Windows is reinstalled, copy all the stuff you need off of the second drive and onto the first.  Then you can reformat the old drive and be done with it.  That's probably the quickest and easiest way.

Next time have a good backup so you can just do a wipe and reinstall.

I am sure you will be able to clean it off without the hassle of reformatting and reinstalling the OS,I have had pretty bad troubles to in the recent past and have always managed to get everything back,so I would not panic just yet.

try the above programs, they will do what they need to do.

Managed to install Malwarebytes after a reinstall... strange.  But anyway, it helped.

Now that this is useless, I think a master thread for various problems might be a good idea.

To safely remove all Trojan.Vundo components, i recommend the use of XoftSpySE Anti-Spyware:

  1. Download Trojan.Vundo Remover -- 100% Free Scanner!

  2. Scan your computer.

  3. Remove all infections.

  4. Restart your computer.

  5. Run another scan to pick up any lingering infections

I do believe if you go to Symantec's website, you can do a search for a particular virus and various ways to remove it.
