Red Ring of Death Strikes Back

Hey, everyone. You might remember last year, shortly before Thanksgiving, my X-Box 360 died. But probably not. Anyway, it has happened again.

As if that were not bad enough, I can't access Microsoft's support website because the website does not display properly in Firefox. Normally I'd just switch to Internet Exploder, but my Comcast (boo hiss) service has a proxy that blocks any Web Browser that is not Firefox.

I tried calling the support phone number and it told me to go to the website. So right now I'm pretty much up a river of feces without a paddle. Or much of a boat.

I guess I'll just wait until I'm using a connection that supports Internet Exploder and go from there.

I hope that never happens to my 360. (It's one of the newer HDMI models but it still has the old processor and heat sink design.)

Wow, talk about having your hands tied. That is crazy your ISP doesn't allow IE. Pretty funny Microsoft's site doesn't support Firefox... heh heh. Good old MS.

That really sucks. Nice timing too, now that you are on a break from school and may possibly be getting 360 games for Xmas. :(

Hope you get it worked out alright.

Not only games; my girlfriend ordered me a wireless internet adapter so I could take my X-Box online for Christmas.

Plus, if my waranty is expired like I think it is, my only real option is to buy a used X-360 Arcade unit and stick my Hard Drive in it.

Chatlab, have you heard of IE tab?  I use it when my firefox decides to get buggy on youtube, or hotmail.  It's an add-on to F irefox that temporarily opens IE, only inside Firefox.  Perhaps this will help? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

Thanks, bkev, I hadn't heard of that...

Edit: Unfortunately, my ISP blocks the IE tabs even in Firefox. -_-

I don't have a solution but an ISP that ONLY allows Firefox, is that even legal? And why do they only allow Firefox?

I thought MS extended the warranty for RROD on all units to three years.

Like I said, I already got one fixed last year, so the website is telling me the waranty is expired.

Of course they don't bloody block IE. Bittorrent possibly, but how the hell can an ISP tell which browser http traffic is going to? I'm calling bullshit on this one.

It seems a bit unlikely to me because isn't IE the most widely-used browser?  However, maybe it's not blocked, but is it possible that the two programs simply aren't compatible, and that's why he can't use IE with it?

Unless it's been three years since your original purchase, they should still replace your 360 regardless of whether it's been fixed/replaced previously or not. I know many gamers who've gone through three or four 360s in the last couple years, all covered under warranty.

If they're telling you that it's been a year since your repair and the warranty is up, I'd call bullshit and insist they provide repair or replacement.

Why people keep putting up with this crap from MS is beyond me.

Call bullshit all you want, it's the truth. Why would I make something like this up?

I know it's the fault of my ISP because I used the same computer with a different internet connection (it's a laptop) and IE works just fine. Now I don't think it's intentionally blocking IE, it's just that Comcast in their colossal incompetence has me on a proxy that happens to stop IE traffic.

You are obviously not very computer savvy...Comcast does not block IE traffic....LMAO

Instead of being defensive about it you might want to take the opportunity and learn something....you clearly have something wrong with your computer.

There isn't a single ISP anywhere that blocks IE or any other broswer as far as I know....somebody prove me wrong.

We have Comcast here at home, and Firefox and Safari work just fine on my Mac, and IE works just fine on my parent's business computer and my brother's computer.  So I don't think it's Comcast.  You probably have a firewall that's blocking IE as a program.

And I didn't realize that a browser could be blocked at that level - I'm aware it happens with certain sites, but I didn't think an ISP would even be capable of doing that.

I scanned my computer and found no viruses. Perhaps I have some outdated driver, but I have no idea which one I'd have to upgrade.

I've altered IE's proxy settings, only to have them jump back to what they were as soon as I try to connect somewhere. And as I said, when I use a different connection, IE works just fine. It happens whether I'm plugged directly into my modem, or if I'm going through a router.

And I'm not being defensive here, I'd be glad to be proven wrong if it would make my computer work properly. But if I'm really that incompetent and you're really so computer-savvy, please tell me what the problem is and I'll be glad to admit you were right.

They can actually look at the User Agent string that the browser is passing and block it that way if they wanted.  So it's quite possible that Comcast does have a badly configured proxy.  If he were being blocked by a software firewall, it probably wouldn't be blocking IETab too.

You can try changing your User Agent in the registry.  That might let you get around Comcast's block.  You might also want to call Comcast and see what the deal is.

I plan to after the holiday ends, believe me.

On a more positive note, I was finally able to get a hold of Microsoft and scheduled a repair for my X-Box after six attepmts to make the voice recognition software on their phone line understand that I wanted a "New Repair".

No page at all. And it's definitely not my firewall, that's the first thing I checked.

I don't get these people who have RRODs frequently.  I have one of the last launch 360s (couldn't wait for the HDMI to hit the Pro model back then) and the only overheating problem I've ever had was when I had my HD DVD adapter (I know, I'm full of impatience) sitting on top of it and the adapter overheated a couple of times when it wasn't even doing anything.

Yes, it gets really hot and its really loud, but I've never had a problem with it.  I do only play it a couple times a week, if that.

Watch, I'll get home and play it tonight and it will overheat...
