my folks had a multiformat PAL/SECAM/NTSC deck before that

i played around with..

now i have a free vcr that i found that is only ntsc...

i have bought the ion USB turntable, its pretty good..

Browsing some reviews on the web make this sound not very good at all, unfortunately.

I belatedly noticed that this thing has no official VHS format logo on it. Not a good sign!

I wouldn't waste your money on one of these machines. They have them in my local Maplin stores. i asked for a demonstration and i was totally unimpressed. the picture quality was well below even old model VHS standard. The capturing software, on their demo dual core intel machine was horrid, dropping many frames as it captured. The audio was only mono and the hiss was really bad and sounded distorted.

Thanks for the info! I wasn't in the market for one, but had hoped this would offer an affordable capture solution to others.

i'm better off using my outside pinnacle image capture

device, and plugging that into the vcr..

I'd be interested to find out if it respects Macorovision copy protection signals or not. If it refuses to copy commercial tapes, and there is no way to inset a "video stabiliser" into the chain, then this device is about as useful as a knitted condom. :-)

I saw the display model the other day. More metal and less plastic parts than a lot of cheapo VCR's I've seen in the past decade. And incredibly, it's not made in China!

No VHS logo anywhere on it. The only outputs are USB and RCA. No recording, so no tuner of course. (I doubt anybody is going to plug their camcorder into the RCA inputs unless they're still using VHS-C or something!) Being mono only is a minus in my book.

I could see it being used for some really old nasty mucked up rental tape you don't want to stick in your expensive gear, but adywan said the picture quality is below par.

Maybe they will be dirt cheap after Christmas? ;)
