What was the purpose of this project?

My cover can be used for the original japan release and the altered subtitle version.

The purpose was that the Japanese DVD was only available in Japan, is out of print, the menus are in Japanese, and the Chinese and Japanese dialog is not subtitled into English.
Basically anyone who is in the U.S., doesn't speak Japanese or doesn't have a time machine is screwed if they want to watch this. :)

aaah I see now! I've had the xvid version for a while now which includes eng subtitles. Thinking about it, it probably came from this release! Never knew the original DVD didn't include the subs.

This thread was started some time before we had finalised the forum rules.
Changing menus and adding English subtitles to a retail DVD classes this project as a Custom DVD, not a Fan Edit.
As such, information, feedback or reviews are welcome, but you are not permitted to discuss distribution methods such as torrents or rapidshare.

I don't plan on altering the cover. I pretty much made it for myself, but anyone else who wants it is free to use it. The cut of the film is the extended japanse version, so I don't think giving it a "catchy" name makes sense, that's what it is. What would you suggest?

maybe on the front,putting "extended japanese version" at the bottom ?perhaps changing "version" with "cut".
also on the "side" (sorry i dont know the english word for it...) changing place "extended japanese version", putting it following movie title ?

Wouldn't it more accurately be named the Director's Cut not Japanese Cut? (At least it would certainly be the author's cut).

There is no directors cut, even the Author has stated that the japanese cut isn't the movie they set out to make, even if it adds some scenes.

I'm not sure I agree with that. The Japanese cut is almost identically to the script. Obviously someone set out to make that movie.

What happened with Johnny Mnemonic? I blame Dolph Lundgren.

Oh no [laughs]. I would blame Sony Pictures Imageworks. Nobody got to see the film that Robert Longo shot. Longo shot the script I wrote which I was happy with. The tragedy with Johnny Mnemonic is that we shot an ironic broadly comic action film that at some level was supposed to be about bad science fiction movies. We were not trying to make a blockbuster mainstream adventure film starring Keanu Reeves. When we started shooting that film Keanu wasn’t a movie star. Speed came out while we were shooting. As soon as it was a hit we had guys from the studio coming out of the woodwork telling us that we shouldn’t shoot a funny movie, where’s the bus? It just got worse from there. We kept doing what we wanted to do. Keanu and Dolph were both doing exactly what we told them to do. Sony cut 90 % of Dolph’s role because they said it would offend the religious right. He doesn’t even have a character in the movie they put out. He’s just this insane caveman who comes rushing in and flinging people around. It doesn’t make any sense. In the film we shot you get his backstory where he is preaching stark naked to churches full of women whoa re afflicted with the weird disease in the movie. He completely got into doing this comic villain and it just ended up making him look like an idiot. I personally felt very bad about that because he was doing what he was told to do.

Alas, that's the tragedy of JM as released: it was *full* them, as written and shot, but Sony surgically excised every one they could. They'd have probably cut the Room Service speech if it had been possible.Ever notice how little sense Dolph Lundgren's Street Preacher character makes? Just this big lunatic who periodically rages onstage and tosses people around?
I'll tell you something you may not believe: Dolph Lungren can actually do *comedy*. I mean, like, who knew? But he can, and did, with great gusto. The nature of his character was anchored in a scene in his church (he's the local Panawave-equivalent) in which he preaches, buck nekkid and skin-studded with creepy nano-gizmos, to a congragation of adoring female NAS victims. He delivers a bombastic, faux-Sterlingesque, literally balls-out *sermon* on the virtues of posthumanity. It came off sort of like Fabio as the Jesus you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. It *rocked*. Hilarious. So Sony cut it.
They cut it out of fear of offending the religious right. No kidding. They actually told me that. That's the sort of thing I mean when I say the JM you see is not the movie we shot.
[JM as I wrote it, and Longo shot it, is only available as the published screenplay (but quite readily available as that). I only agreed to publish it, in the first place, because I wanted to be in the position to demonstrate the difference between what I wrote, and we shot, and what they released. I doubt there's even a remote possibility of there ever being a restored "director's cut", although the Japanese version of the DVD is a little closer to our intention.

Hmm. Even taking the bolded quote at face value, I READ the script.
While it's been quite a while since I have read it, I don't remember much of anything different between that and the Japanese cut. Maybe a couple lines, but it's really really close. Closer than most movie final cuts are to the script.
I think that's just William Gibson unwilling to take any blame for the movie's failure, and hoping that no one reading the quote will actually read the script AND get to see the Japanese cut.
Still. I liked the theatrical version a lot, and love the Japanese cut more.
Ironically, Johnny Mnemonic was the reason I saw the Matrix opening day (playing hookie). (Though the awesomeness of the Matrix was the reason I saw it again that evening... and the following day.)

Plus, it sounds like some post production stuff probably visually altered the movie to an extent.

I just happened to find this and wasn't sure whether or not this was the Japanese Version you are referring to. Seems this will be coming out soon.
Is someone selling the custom made Johnny Mnemonic (JM) Japan Cut Extended Version? I'm interested.
