Regarding to a german website, theire may be a Malaysian Bootleg DVD Set with the Special Editions and DTS Sound. It is stated as an copy of the US Laser Disc with DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 and Dolby Surround, some asian Subs and english subs. And additionally theire may be a bootleg from same country with DD5.1 EX and DTS 5.1 Sound with video format in Widescreen.

I have the chinese boots and they are not very good quality. The dts mix is a fake cooked up mix, and also the channels even on the 5.1 dd are screwed up.
The video quality is not even laserdisc quality since the laserdiscs were copied to s-vhs and then to dvd.
Even the dual layers suck.
Dark Jedi's special edition transfer is better even if it only have the 2 channel digital track and not the ac3. Ac3 i believe is stored analog on the right analog channel and needs an ac3 RF out and decoder to get the track on the laserdiscs.
This was obviously inferior to dvd where the ac3 is already stored digitally.
I have the g'kar it has bad macroblocking incorrect aspect ratio cropped image and fake 5.1 mix upmix of the televised 2.0 also on the disc. Also pal speedup lame. I much prefer ntsc. Though the screengrabs compared to darkjedi's look sharper, it is where playback and watching the movie where it counts.
Too bad the laserdiscs have a soft image and are interlaced. I have mine and the sound mix on the uncompressed digital stereo tracks rocks.
I just never bother to watch them because i hate the special editions.
I remember at one point a site reviewed the g'kar set as having a shaper image than the 2004 dvd set, this was of course before the HD broadcasts became available as bootlegs at 1080 lines of resolution.
As much as i hate the 2004 cuts the image is superior than any previous release, and i would buy them on blu ray today if they were officially available. Despite the very bad color that Lucas chose for the recut.
I've pretty much figured the gout is the best version of the oot lucas will ever give us, it fucking makes me furious but i have the damn dvds and unless the often stalled X-0 project gets done in my lifetime they are the best i will ever get.
“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.
I like the PAL Video Format
NTSC is like "Never The Same Color"
but I don't like the speedup of PAL.
Poor thing that the boots are bad Quality, It would been a nice source, if they where better.
I'd like to see the 1997 SEs in good quality, but I don't prefer them. But they are a part of the history of the Star Wars Saga.
I own the German Specilal Edition Trilogy Box (In german of course :) ) and the japanese LD Special Edition Trilogy Box, but I was never able to watch the LDs, because I did'nt own a LD Player. :(

Sadly I haven't had much time recently so I haven't made much significant progress only a few things to do with colour correction and aspect ratios, but hopefully I'll find more time soon.

I don't think they're on myspleen, I've never seen torrents for them anywhere I think they were originally put on the newgroups and since then they have just been traded, that's how I got them.

as Skyjedi said these aren't actually as good as we might hope, video is rubbish and audio is fake.
as for PAL vs. NTSC I prefer PAL but that's because I'm used to PAL speedup and not used to 3:2 pulldown, but I'll release my versions in both formats.

Cool! Thats really good news for NTSC and PAL Fans :)
I am used to PAL Speedup too.. I just have some NTSC DVDs since I collect DVDs.

NTSC vobs needn't be telecined...a lot of R1s I own are 23.976 fps

In analogue maybe, but in the digital domain that isn't valid anymore. And in HiDef this is history anyway.

My TV supports 24p so does my HD-EP10. No NTSC stutter ;)
Does someone know something about this:

Someone know how quality is?
Maybe it could be an additional source for the project...

No. VCD quality= shitty.... Completely worthless. Sorry.
I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.
They're vcds so about vhs quality... They're also fullscreen.
They were cool to own at the time (well, I thought so anyway) but a mere curiosity these days.
The Monkey King - Uproar In heaven (1965) Restoration/Preservation Project
Nezha Conquers the Dragon King (1979) BBC 1.66:1 & Theatrical 2.35:1 preservations
I've never seen a VCD that has at least the same quality as a professional produced VHS.
Well, so the VideoCD Box just a "nice to have" :) ..I could put it next to the Laser Discs, which I cannot play, although I own them
(jeah, the winner of that auction is me :) )

Can't you give us a little clip or something? I'm really looking forward to see the result!
Hey Max_Rebo, got any news?
A Goon in a Gaggle of 'em
Sorry Guys, been really busy lately and just got back from holiday hopefully I'll be able to make some progress over the next week.
Hi Max.
Not sure if you still need them, but a while back I transferred all the extras on the superb 1997 SE Laserdisc boxed set (NTSC version). Have all the docs. and trailers etc in nice quality - used a Panasonic stand-alone DVD -recorder directly linked up to a Pioneer CLD-2950 LD player using pro-fi gold leads.
If these are any good to you I'll send you copies of the discs.

Any updates Max_Rebo?
Unfortunately no updates at the moment, I have been really busy with my new job and I am currently working away from home.
The only vaguely relevant thing I have done recently relates to the recent showings of the trilogy on ITV here in the UK, now the last few times they have shown them it has been the 2004 versions (Pan & Scanned to 16:9) so I usually just ignore them however I flicked over when ANH was on and realised that Luke didn't have a Green lightsaber in the Falcon so it was actually the '97 version which surprised me but I thought little more of it (except I realised the pan&scanned version showed the same problems as the sources I'm using i.e. it was stretched), a day or two later it occoured to me that it might be really useful to record these versions to use as a reference for colours and subtitles so I recorded ESB, so I now have a slightly stretched P&S version of the '97 ESB, and then last weekend I set ROTJ to record (and proceeded to watch the theatrical version on DVD) however the really odd thing is ROTJ was the '04 version, so the recording is completely useless to me.
Obviously someone at ITV used the wrong version for ANH and ESB, but it's a shame I didn't get a recordings of all 3 to use as a colour reference, so I'll just have to hope they make the same mistake again.

These will certainly be useful although I haven't really started to think about extras yet.
yeh, i watched the ITV showings. Funny thing about them using the 2004 version for ROTJ. Last year they showed all 3 of the '97 versions so i was hoping they did the same this year so i could get a higher res of Sebastian Shaw for my ROTJ:R. I recorded all 3 and was so disappointed when i got to Jedi. But i have ANH from ITV if you need it
Maybe ITV decided they wanted to show ROTJ in HD, therefore they used the '04 version?

Max. allowable image sizes in signatures: reminder here
I have just bought a new VHS set from amazon of these. Im gonna record to DL DVDs and that should be good enough quality I think and I might edit. If they are good enough i could post some screenshots i supppose.
I had heard these sources were cropped. Either way they look great especially Star Wars. This may be the best quality version of the films with the proper coloring that you could get. As for the special edition trailers.
I think the 1997 trailer on the 2004 bonus disc actually used an OOT shot where Wedge helps Luke out and shoots a TIE right before the X-wing would have crashed into it. There is a very big noticeable scratch at this point. But then watching Dark Jedi's I swore I saw the shot as it appears in the special edition. So if there are two versions of that trailer maybe I wasn't imagining things. Either way Dark Jedi's '97 extras disc is pretty good and I'd be willing to trade it for some other stuff. I'd reccomend wathing that first before trying to transfer any of the '97 stuff just to see if it would have a good chance of being an improvement. The one thing the '97 vhs tapes have is a small bumper at the end with the 3-d logo and the voiceover "Now see (name of movie) the way it was meant to be all along."
My wishlist would be for someone to capture the 1995 interviews and "One Last Time" trailer since the existing Rowman discs of those are vhs sourced and not from the Faces laserdiscs. Watching the dvd transfers again they looked like the black level was too high as well. I don't think it would be too hard to improve those. Now I wish I had bought the used '95 set I saw in an FYE last summer. But I'm having problems with my DV capture box anyways:
Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77
Hello all,
You may be happy to know that I have actually found the time to do some work on this, I spent a bit of time the other day syncing up the 5.1 track for ESB which I nearly completed, but eventually got really pissed off and decided to work on the video instead so I have now correctly aligned all the sources for ANH so that I can cut and fade between them at will.
The only major hurdle I have yet to jump is the colour correction, I still intend to write a new avisynth filter which requires a little more C++ knowledge than I currently have but I have a couple of text books and it shouldn't take too long.

I think they did show ROTJ in HD, but it is still odd that they switched from SD to HD for just one film.

Good luck with that, if you want to get the best out of them make sure you do multiple captures and average them to reduce the noise and also set the black and white points correctly, personally I wouldn't waste a DL DVD on a VHS transfer, single layer is more than big enough.

They are slightly cropped and stretched, but the cropping is only around 8 pixels from each side, which would be well into the overscan region on a lot of TVs, and the stretching is easily corrected. However the '97 version isn't without it's colour problems, for example Hoth is possibly more blue that on the '04 DVDs.

I didn't know Dark Jedi had done a '97 extras disc, I'll PM you about a trade. I haven't thought much about extras, as a minimum I'd want the 'making of' stuff so it has everything the VHS has, but I will think about this more later on.

Wow that's a really messed up capture, I'm doing a load of VHS transfers of home movies at the moment which is unfortunately slowing down progres on other projects, but I have a PCI capture card so I don't know anything about DV boxes, good luck getting that sorted out.
