Howard the Duck - Remaster Project by iNiTiaL (Released)

Howard the Duck is sometimes considered a lost movie - noone cares about it including its makers. Apart from the promised 4x3, analogue-sourced, no extras Brazilian DVD release expected in 2007, the fans of the movie have been left in the dark… until now!

I have done plenty of work in video restoration in the past, and now I have stumbled across the ultimate print of HTD. Fans of the movie read on - but be careful not to drool on your keyboard:

  • 16x9 Aspect Ratio

  • Fully DIGITAL source; No VHS or LaserDisc.

  • Fully DIGITAL sound

  • PAL Master Format (higher resolution than NTSC)

  • Completely CLEAN video, no operator logos.

So I have the raw video and now it is time to begin the restoration process (it doesn’t really need it, the quality is 10/10 already but I want to remove any trace of video noise and dynamically improve the audio). Screenshots will follow here soon as I run the video through the PC and start the process.

Just another note: Piracy is wrong and you’ll probably go to hell for it! We wouldn’t resort to this if Lucasfilm would release a proper DVD!

Merry Christmas,
iNiTiaL

It would help if you listed your source.

And who is saying that the Brazilian DVD will be full-screen. it will most definitely not be.

Will this be version be censored? I hear they deleted the condom scene and the tongue-in-the-cigarette-lighter scene for british airings. Does anyone know if it has any station tags on the screen?

there shouldn't be any staation tags at all. there may be a voice over during the credits saying what's on next though. i'll double check if the condom scene is present when i have a spare 5 minutes.

I think by 4x3, he meant LFL's latest dvd fad, non animorphic widescreen. What is the exact aspect ratio of Howard anyway, 2.35 hard matte like every other George Lucas production? And will the upcoming dvd really be from an analog source? Weren't the Star Wars laserdisc masters from D1 digital tapes?

Region 2 PAL.  When you find something Region 1 NTSC, then we'll get excited.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

Who cares about videoformats and regioncodes these days? Get a player that supports PAL->NTSC conversion. Most of them do nowadays.

Some people do not like PAL speedup though.

I prefer PAL speedup to PAL telecine since I can just punch "-speed 23.976/25" into MPlayer and reverse PAL speedup.

I wish there was a LD player that could do that. ;)

I bought the German DVD back before Christmas, and still haven't had a chance to check it out (or compare it to Dark Jedi's downconversion of the HDTV broadcast).

There has since been a UK Region 2 release as well. According to dvdcompare, the English track on the German DVD is dual mono instead of Dolby 2.0 Surround (which the UK release has). I haven't confirmed this yet.
