1,900 is cheap, damn cheap for an X-0 Player especially if it is sold by a reputable seller who offers a warranty and guarantee on all parts.

I cannot afford that now but back when i got my collection of laserdiscs i could have.

Kinda rediculous to spend over a few years a couple of thousand dollars on discs and have only a low end 60 dollar laserdisc player, LOL.

I could afford it today only if i did not pay my rent for about 3 months.

I have come across the website of a broadcast equipment dealer who apparently still sells industrial Pioneer players.
http://www.broadcaststore.com/
I haven't called to ask what their prices are though.

I was lucky enough to score a sealed LD-V4400 a few years ago on ebay, and I think it performs better than my now-busted combo player. It only plays Laserdiscs, and is built like a tank! No fancy features like auto-reverse that can break, so hopefully it will last me twenty years. ;)

Just comment on how many times this project has been called "dead".

You guys might want to hold off on doing so until someone who is actually involved in the project actually says as much, ya know?

From what I understand the X0 project is on hold while a key member of the team recovers from a long term illness.

This thread makes me sad every time I check in on it.  It's like a government housing project that promised to save the community from inequity, and ended up in squalor.  At least I won't have to worry about seeing this thing through to the end, that will be up to the next generation of fans.  I'm already in my 30s, so I'll be long since dead by the time this project is finished.

I'm interested in seeing the third part fo that color correction article, guys.  That is, if you ever finished it.

On another topic, has anyone from the team heard from Laserman?  I do not believe his condition has been addressed recently.

I'm sure his condition is: "none of our business," other than he's not able to continue the project.

Don't tell me this thread is so dead that it has become another LOLCats thread.

If it really is a dead thread why keep bringing it back?

That is not just beating a dead horse, we are already past the beating the dead horse skeleton.  What is left just ashes. LOL

Perhaps my question was unneeded.  I was worried about a valued member of the community, is all.  You definitely have a point about it not being my business, Zombie; I just wished we knew more.

Personally, I think it's a very valid question and there's nothing wrong with having concern for a mate.  Good on ya bKev.

Could someone on the X0 team please let us know if Laserman is ok?

Just been reading through the older posts again and came across this post from Laserman:

Thanks for the PM Moth3r.
By that I meant the best way to fix the problem is to do it electronically rather than trying to filter it later.
Basically the problem with Laserdisc is that even the best players crap out at around 5 to 5.5MHz. This leaves laserdisc with a relatively slow rise time (the time taken for a signal on the video path to change from one colour to another) and can cause the 'ringing' or halos as well as awful transitions between colours.
To solve the problem somewhat you can map the Chroma signal to the Luma signal. The Luma signal is relatively quick, around 150nanoseconds, whereas the chroma signal lags with a rise time of around 800nanoseconds. By devising a circuit to lock the chroma signal rise time to the Luma's faster rise time the effect can be pretty much eliminated, resulting in a DVD like picture from laserdisc.

If you have a laserdisc with a set of colourbars on it you can see the problem between the Magenta and Green vertical bars quite clearly.
If you were smarter than me you could then work out a way to lower the rise time of the Luma signal with some sort of rise time acceleration and nail the halos forever.

Now, this sounds really interesting.  Can anyone shed any further light on this whole 'remapping' business and how it might be achieved please?

The upshot of this discussion was that if you don't know how to build a rise time accelerator yourself, you should look on ebay for a Faroudja VS-50 or Crystal Vision VPS-1, both of which include similar bandwidth-expansion circuitry.

ahh, ok.  Thanks for the info Moth3r.  Presumably, those units would also include a better combfilter than what's inside the LD player.

Is this what the X0 team used for their captures?

I understand that this project is on indefinite hold due to Laserman's health. I wish him and his family the best.

This project showed great promise. I realize it may never be completed, but it seemed to me that some great strides were made.

In the spirit of this forum and preservation in general, I ask the X0 team members to consider releasing the work done to-date. If nothing else, the raw X0 captures alone would be of immense use to this community.

It occurs to me that not only does Laserman have health problems, but I haven't seen much of the other two members either recently.  Zion pops in occasionaly, but what happened to MeBe?  Or am I just not paying attention?

I realise, and am sympathetic to the fact, that Lasermans health is waaaayyyyyyyyyyy more important than any preservation project (lets keep things in perspective here), and I sincerely hope that he is recovering. However ALOT of people made gracious donations to this restoration project - it would be 'the done thing' if we had some kind of official word on the status of this project? Surely if a member of the team is ill/drops out then you find other ways for the project to advance, or say sorry people but this project is no longer going ahead......?

Surely it wouldn't take much trouble to update the X0 website for those still interested in the status of this project?

Cheers,
