while your at it why not make your own beta and laserdisc, LOL.

HD-DVD died and is obsolete.

If George ever gets off his but and releases his preferred version you can bet it will be on blu ray.

well, i will never support bluray, thanx to those idiots at sony, i've been burned by their lousy formats,

overpriced crappy electronics, and shoddy cds/dvds etc way too many times....i hope george lucas NEVER releases a high-def version of

any of the star wars movies on bluray...and that goes double for bluray burners/media/etc........**#$*&#*)#$&)#

besides i could care less if hd-dvd is dead, i have a player that works (just like my laserdisc)...except i don't have to buy an expensive

burner to play the files at high resolutions.....so are you having fun playing your mkv files off your computer?

this way, i can preserve at least some of the quality of the files...and it will be interesting to see how they come out..

actually, a 13gig file could be split across 2 dual layer dvds....without losing any quality....hmmmm......

Well i have a PS3 and i can play my 1080p mkv HD movies just fine without having to re-encode them or use an expensive burner. i can usually fit a movie on a DVD-9 or split over 2 discs. you can also make blu-ray player compatible HD discs with chapters & menus by using plain old dual layer discs without re-encoding too.

Good luck with getting any new movies for you HD-DVD player :) As has been said HD-DVD is dead and will just fade into obscurity. It won't even have the nostalgia value that laserdiscs have. I think it was pretty much doomed from the start. Microsoft made a HUGE mistake when they didn't build their X-Box360 with a built in drive and a HDMI port. That could have tipped the scales in favour of HD-DVD somewhat.

adywan,

i totally agree with you, up until a certain point...yes, the xbox 360 could probably play mkv movies also...

(check out tversity : http://tversity.com/home

the fact that i can create hd-dvd movies, burn them on regular or DL dvd discs, means

i will NEVER run out movies....(****** COUGH, bluray rips->hd dvd COUGH******)

that combined with all the HD rips out there, means the actual format is irrelevant,

only the player is important.....and $50 for the player+ (xbox360) was cheaper

than supporting any sony player (yes, i know other people make bluray players,

but it will be a cold day before i support them or the ps3).... i'm sure a standalone

hd-dvd player is dirt cheap compared to bluray players also....

that and the fact that bluray movies are pretty expensive,

compared to regular dvds.......

so while i'm watching SW ep 1,2,3,4,5,6 in hd-dvd,

how long is it going to be before the appear in bluray format?

(and yes, someone could convert these files over to bluray,

burn them on a bluray disc, etc.......hmmmm......has anyone tried that either??)

But to rip a bluray disc and convert it to HD-dvd means you'll have to buy the bluray disc, so you'll be supporting the format anyway.

May I second Dunedain's request for a repost of Ep1-3 of these encodes? A lot of people seemed to have missed out on them, and even though I have a Giganews account, the only thing I could find 170 days back is a post of "Addicted To Star Wars v2", which is a nice gimmick (cool idea WookieGroomer) to have but unfortunatly not really suited for a serious evening at the (home) movies, if you know what I mean.

Thanks in advance.

Ah, you could rent or borrow the BD from a friend to convert... ;)

The trouble with the burnable media is it costs the same as buying the movie. But we're talking here about movies that aren't commercially available on the format yet, so it still might be worthwhile to someone...

I'm staying out of the HD thing though, I can't afford to really bother with it and the library of titles is too small for me to care (much less the titles I'm interested in).

Give it another 3-5 years when all the bugs are worked out and the prices go down, then who knows...

mess with anything else......besides here in the US, some providers

are cutting off the whole alt.* newsgroups anyways...

Doing a little housekeeping, now that I have an HP MediaSmart server, and I find that I've got two separate downloads of some of the WG stuff. First thing I noticed is that the two copies of the 8GB Jedi I have are different sizes, by just a few bytes. D'oh!

I've looked through this thread and all the .NFO files, and I don't see file hashes or CRC32 numbers available. Could you (yes, you, person-who's-reading-this) post the CRC32 numbers (or MD5 hashes) for whatever WG files you've got (8GB or 13GB, any Episode), so (a) I can dump whichever of my two copies is corrupt; and (b) we can make sure the checksum info is available for whoever else checks down the road?

Thanks!

Off-topic, but I gotta fix some FUD:

I have a 10Mb/sec down connection, and with a premium news host (like any of Giganews, Easynews, UsenetServer, etc.) I can completely saturate my connection. ALL THE TIME. Usenet is NOT inherently slow! Not too sure about inefficient -- but if it's able to consistently fire 10 Mb/sec into my computer, whether it's really efficient or not is moot.

I'm also a member at several private tracker sites, and I do get good torrent speeds. Some even run at 10 Mb/sec down. But definitely not all torrents run that quickly. On Usenet, *everything* runs fast! So if I have a choice between the two methods (Usenet or BitTorrent) for a given file, I always choose Usenet.

With a premium news server, NOMP, and a subscription to Newzbin, Usenet can be just about as convenient as BT.

I just got the 13GB version of the original trilogy (thanks, Wideload! :) ), and I've had the chance to watch a few seconds of Star Wars so far to see if the file works, and it looks incredible! :) I've never watched Star Wars in HD before, just amazing picture quality, so sharp and detailed! :) Thanks to Wookie Groomer for putting together such a great set! :)

I have a question about the set. I noticed the res of the video is 1920x820, is that the res it was originally broadcast in in Germany? Also, is the .WMV format the video is in the format it was originally recorded on by the DVR in Germany, or did it need to be converted to .WMV, and if so, why? If it was converted to .WMV for whatever reason, how was the bit-rate of the video conversion decided on so as to not lose any of the quality of the original file from the DVR? Thanks for any info. :)

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

I'd hazzard a guess and say that there in the WMV format so that there playable on the Xbox 360.  The 360 can play these files with no problem if there connected via an external HD and that hard drive is formatted to HFS+ to allow the 12gb file size.  The 360 will only read external drives in HFS+ or FAT32 (this means file sizes are limited to 4gb, which is a bit pointless for HD files).

I've noticed that wookiegroomers Episode 1 & 2 are currently being postes to a.b.hdtv.x264 by an anonymous poster.  I'm hoping that they post episode 3 as well!

Does anyone know which cut of Episode 1 it is? i.e. theatrical cut or extended DVD cut.

Cheers

I don't know what the differences are.  Give me some examples to look for and I'll check which version it is.
