Just an update on this... not sure if it's been said already or not.

The Hong Kong laserdisc is not worth anything. It's just a bootleg transfer of the UK VHS, complete with 4% speedup hard-encoded to NTSC. You mayaswell go after the UK VHS and record that *at 25fps* and touch it up a bit...

Thought it might be useful to post a summary, seeing as this thread was started over two years ago.

Song of the South DVD versions

• Piratebay/mininova (superhappyfun?) version - sourced from Japanese laserdisc, has burned-in subtitles during the songs.

• “Coal Black Easter Egg” Version & Cyber-EFX version - both sourced from Hong Kong/Korean/Chinese LD or UK VHS, no-one knows exactly. No burned-in subtitles, but poor video quality. Small selection of extras.

• Mentor version - barebones DVD encode, sourced from DVB cap off BBC broadcast. Best picture quality, but some interlacing/blending issues with PAL conversion.

• Doctor M, JoeyO & Rowman 2-DVD release - disc one is the movie sourced from Mentor's DVD and restored to NTSC, disc two features a comprehensive selection of extras and special features.

I think these are the main versions out there, if I've got anything wrong, please post in this thread.

I have one of that was sold through a website that I can't remember the name of.

There are no burned in subs, no menus, and a folder of cover art (that may have been added later by a 3rd party).

I don't know the origin beyond that and the quality is not terrible (mind you our new release is much better).

Btw, I haven't forgotten the subtitles. I'm about 25% of the way through fixing them, ugh, it sucks. I'll get back to them at some point.

I'm thinking perhaps we should consider a re-release that just removes the titles completely.

Better subs? No subs? Either/or, really. It'll still be a terrific DVD. We all support your work on this.

It appears on disc 2 that the 2nd Splash Mountain extra should be 16x9 not 4x3.

Has anyone else had a problem with that?

Yeah that is an authoring issue, for some reason the way the disc was compiled it would not allow me to present it in 16x9.  I guess it could be added onto the to do list for another version.

I took a look at the disc to see if I could reauthor or manually tweak the ifo.

The problem is that all the programs on that DVD are in the same VTS.  Unfortunately, you cannot mix aspect ratios within the same VTS... it's just one of those things.

Yeah I know.  For some reason DVDLab and myself can't agree on using multiple VTS with any successful results.

One day perhaps.

I've seen the Coal Black Easter Egg version, but was very disappointed in the video quality. Can anyone help me out getting the new 2 disc version?

Nothing like hopping into a thread at the last minute, but the 2-disc set sounds like a dream compared to the disc I have (the Coal Black one).  Is it still uploaded anywhere?  If so, can someone PM the location.  You guys rock!

Well, I edited mine together using the Japanese LD, the Hong Kong LD, and the entire "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah" sequence as released on the ALICE IN WONDERLAND deluxe LD and DVD editions. There are no subtitles on my version, using the Hong Kong LD to replace subbed shots.

MINE is the best. :-)

P.S. I'm also the guy who created the SUSPIRIA PCM disc, BTW. One of many projects.

@ drsd2kill (aka Matt_Stevens),

The Suspiria disc was a DAMN good one,so what other projects have you done and can that Song of The South disc be obtained from you?

I was one of the LUCKY people that got one of your Suspiria DVD's.

thanks for your efforts

I'm curious to see some screenshots or clips.

Laserdisc transfers before now have largely been inferior quality.

Are you claiming to be Matt_Stevens? Why did you create a new account?

No, I'm not Matt Stevens. If you read his original posts about the SUSPIRIA PCM disc, I am the guy who actually edited and created the SUSPIRIA PCM disc. Matt didn't do it - apparently he distributed it to quite a few people, though. Ah, but no matter - I put the effort into it for fans like us. I just found this website when I was researching the Criterion Bond commentaries.

I have a HUGE list of other projects. E-mail me if you like at drsd2kill@aol.com. I have put back the original sound mixes (in full PCM) to other films too, though the titles are not ones I would think would be popular on this site - lol - such as HELLO, DOLLY!, OLIVER!, GREASE, etc. HELLO, DOLLY! I actually made a 2-channel Dolby Surround encoded PCM track from the 6-channel AC-3 Laserdisc mix, which in itself was mastered from the original 6-channel master without all the processing, filtering and compression that is notable on the DVD release. :-(

Wait....

DocM, did you finish that conversion?? I haven't checked this board in a dog's age, so I saw Moth3r's summary of releases and I"m confused.

Someone pm me about getting it, please?

On a side note, people are still downloading my rs upload of the Mentor cap. hehe.

Well, yes and no.

Both discs are finished and have been released, but I'm (supposed to be) in the process of making some tweaks.

Disc 1's English subtitles need lots of work (and I'm down to the last 20 minutes), and disc 2 needs an aspect ratio fix (which is already done).

If I stop putting it off, v2 will be released before the year is out (maybe).

Dr M, what process did you eventually come up with to restore the Mentor version to NTSC?

A while ago I bought a Hong Kong DVD which was 29.97fps, hard-telecined with terrible field blending - probably a poor conversion from a PAL source. An AviSynth script called Mrestore was surprisingly successful in restoring it to 25 progressive frames per second.

Mrestore has since been superseded by a new script called Srestore; if you're happy with the current conversion, it's worth noting for future reference. On the other hand, if you feel that the current version could be improved, and you're tweaking the discs anyway, it might be worth considering re-doing the encode.

Jmoomer was kind enough to send me a copy of a Disney special with a tribute to Joel Chandler Harris.  It runs about 50 minutes, and gives an excuse to revisit the project.

I also had someone suggest to me to pick up a 16mm version of the film on eBay, but I wasn't getting caught up in that money pit again (unless the print is damn near pristine).

Hmm. Never heard of Srestore.

I used the old/no longer developed Restore24. While slower and more painful to use than Mrestore, I find its ability to find and remove blended fields to be superior.

I might have to try Srestore, but the truth is, there's never enough truly clean fields to reconstruct 24fps in situations like this. A few will always be blended.

If you have the inclination, I'd be interested to see a short sample of the original vs the restored video.

I started work on a VHS preservation and tripped across a funky interlaced pattern and figured I'd give srestore a try. It's just as useless as mrestore.

It is intelligent in picking the correct input and output framerates without setting the arguments (unlike restore24). Unfortunately, it crap at finding the blended field.  Ok, not crap.  In some scenes it's on par with r24, in others is worse.

AFA comparison clips, yeah I really should get around to that. :)
